So we've all had times when we're like "....seriously?" after an incident, or we're left scratching our heads and staring at the screen. You may share them in this thread. Please note that this thread isn't about things that make you angry, per se, but things that leave you thinking, "wtf?" Not that they're mutually exclusive concepts, mind you, but I don't want this to be a rant thread.

    ...

About a year ago, I was on a site and I was posting with someone I had just met. If you know me or have seen me post, you know that I'm particular on how I post. One thing I don't like / can't wrap my head around is multiple streams of dialogue written concurrently in a single thread. That is, let's say I have a post. And in that post, my character asks about the weather, tells the other character that his cat was hit by a car, and then proceeds to explain why cheez its are God's gift to humankind. The other person has his character respond to each of those things in turn, and then when it comes back to me, I continue. Thus, there are three different streams of dialogue running simultaneously in the same conversation.

Now, the site: I was writing with someone who had about seven to ten streams of dialogue at the same time. My mind was boggled. I had seen people with two or three, but never that many. I didn't want to be rude and PM the person to say, "Hey, you're doing it wrong" when clearly he thought that this was the right way to roleplay. So I therefore decided to approach it like his character was literally talking about all those things in the same breath. After the third post in which I only replied to the last thing the character said and I had my character comment about how much the other person's character talked, I found myself the proud recipient of a PM. I checked my inbox. It was my RP buddy acknowledging that I was a beginning roleplayer and offering to take me under his wing.

Yes. I became a beginning roleplayer because I didn't do the multiple streams of dialogue thing. Not, "Hey, our writing styles don't match," but the automatic conclusion that I was a beginner.

That definitely left me sitting there scratching my head.

I'd give you a sample of my RP post to show that I was certainly not a beginning roleplayer, but I fear that the other person might be a member of RPG-D. Ah, well.

I usually go wtf when people clearly ignore the setting of the site.

Example: A couple of months ago, on a historical site I am on someone had a thread where his character was cooking and he had his character open a fridge. And I had a wtf moment because people back then did not have fridges. I mean, okay, even I am not 100% historically accurate, but some things are jus obvious for a historical board.

This is my favorite 'wtf' moment of all time. I was a member on a medieval fantasy board and someone applied with a werewolf character who wore a wristwatch. And not just any old wristwatch -- a SILVER wristwatch. It was actually impressive that they managed to break the setting's tech level and werewolf mythology all at once. Bonus points for the fact that their werewolf character went around dressed like Indiana Jones.

I was once on a site where there was a fourth year Hufflepuff using Jackie Chan as their PB.

I didn't have this one but @Upper Class Twit was once in a thread where his character (a female) was trying to interact with this new member's character. But the player wouldn't respond (focusing only on how sexy their character was dancing and how gay they were) and made things difficult, eventually the scene basically ended like this:

Girl: Let's go get some ice cream.
Guy: Sorry, my shift is for the next six hours.
Girl: .... ok? (What can you do now really? Stand there awkwardly and wait?)
Another Guy: *walks in and interacts with Guy for a bit.*
Guy and Another Guy: *walk off for sex*

Then there was another thread where Upper Class Twit's character went to a bathhouse and was basically sexually harassed by a stranger. The guy said this to Twit's character:
I thought it was WTF-worthy but also hilariously creepy.

LOL! Jareth's creepy bathhouse reminded me of an equally creepy 'wtf' moment from my haunted asylum days. A guy joined the board with a ghost character. His first (and only) thread opened with him lurking in the women's shower waiting to perv on whoever came in. When none of the female characters jumped at the chance to get naked for him, he eventually wandered off.

Oh yes, and also from the haunted asylum board. The player who applied for a psychiatrist and their character profile was still full of Harry Potter references. My poor psychiatrist character was so befuddled. "So, I see you got your medical degree from...Hogwarts?"

There was this girl who was, like, obsessed with one of my male characters. He's all emotionally constipated so maybe she wanted to cuddle him or something, IDK, but she made multiple characters to interact with him, except she made each pretending to be a different player each time (b/c there's no such thing as IP logging, yo.)

Anyway, the worst was the character of hers who met him fell in love with him 5 posts in. Not 5 of hers, 5 total posts in the thread. And he'd been a d!ck the whole time b/c of blahblahblah board plotty reason blahblahblah and also he's just kind of a d!ck. Homegirl was so upset that he didn't immediately respond to her ~charms that she crushed the gemstone in her chest that held her magic. (This was a magical RP and characters could lose their magic by breaking the gemstone in their chest.) Like, breaking stones and losing magic was a Big eFfing Deal in the game and my dude was like O.O HO SH!T, GURL U B CRAY CRAY and ran away.

I would have thrown a male character into that thread. Just have him wander on in like "....ohhhhhh, this is awkward. :\ Now we have one creep too many here."

Now that would have made for a fabulous thread.

I once was engaged in a heated argument regarding the creation of an organization based loosely on the concept of a monotheistic religion. He was offended that I would choose to create it because it contained veiled parallels to common elements found in Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. This despite the fact that the universe features other organizations that draw upon druidism, shamanism, a non-theistic religion based upon philosophical principles, other monotheistic worships, voodoo and loa-worship, spirit worship, and more.

It wasn't that I was applying elements from existing religion but rather that he was offended by the subtle parallels to Christianity (despite the fact that the religion upon which the organization is based is considered established lore within the universe). The kicker? He was an atheist. He wasn't offended on behalf of the religion, but seemed to hold a special hatred for Christians that rendered the religion personally offensive to him while other religions were just fine. (note: not saying that this is common of atheists!)

That said, this was also an individual who in the past had lashed out at me for being a member of the staff and had even stalked/harassed me (aggressively enough that I had severed all ties to the community for an extended period of time in order to avoid him). We had only resumed communication a few weeks earlier when he promised to not repeat his earlier actions since he had grown up and I accepted his apology. I won't be making that mistake again!

That would have been wonderful fun: the psychiatrist who belongs in an asylum because he thinks that he is part of the Harry Potter universe! Now I want to create a character who genuinely believes that he is from a popular fandom.

I was once in a game wherein my English speaking character was in a meeting with two other English speaking characters. The two of them, sitting about four feet away, proceeded to have a conversation about hacking into his computer to steal all of his information, in the middle of the meeting the three of them were supposed to have. But they did it in "whisper" language so he wasn't supposed to notice.

Even if he didn't overhear their conversation, and that is stretching it, he somehow wasn't supposed to notice that they were whispering to one another in the middle of a conversation with him.

I almost threw my character into the thread to see what would happen, but I couldn't think of a reason for him to be in the women's bathroom that wouldn't result in him losing all of his privileges. Plus, poor Simon couldn't interact with ghosts.

I never thought of it that way, but you're right. If it had been an intentional part of the character (rather than an example of poor cut-and-paste skills), it would have been epic. Someone who thought he was from the Harry Potter stories would have fit right into that place.

That's a really interesting character idea... It's like the opposite of breaking the 4th wall. Or something.

Crap. Now I wish I'd've thought of it first. ;)

In the game I'm in now, we have a great character whose power is to perceive other characters as people their play by has been in other media. He's convinced his boyfriend is Spider-man, that his boyfriend's father is a robot, and that my character is Aslan, so both God and a lion. It's hilarious.

So, person wants to thread with me. YAY. We start a thread and her character walks away from mine... repeatedly. How to RP with that? When I PM her about it, she responds that she'd just chase her character down. Well, maybe her character would... but mine wouldn't.

Same board, diff person wants to RP with me. YAY. We start a thread and HER character walks away from mine ... repeatedly. WTF?

I hasve seen on historical sites wedding photos 150+ years before they were invented, rucksacks, wrist watches when pocket watches were the norm, 6-fires pistols when they got only one bullett, and so on...

OH MY GOD..... Seriously? He sounds like he probably knows The Bible better than me :D

A lot of my old RPs have WTF RP moments. Keep in mind that I was only thirteen then and a Harry Potter fan!

I had an old character named Hickory Fudge (or something) on a Harry Potter site. And this character kept being a nuisance. In one class, either Flying or Magical Creatures, my character was so annoying that he was lifted up off the ground and was yelled at by the professor. After he kicked the professor's shin and ran into the Forbidden Forest :D

There was another thread where I had my character's mother come into Great Hall to tell him his father died and then there was another thread where it was a funeral at home. So basically I was RPing with myself, having my character yell at random people who happened to wander in. I do remember another thread where my character broke his leg and magically appeared in his Transfiguration class (I think) to taunt non-Slytherins. There was a thread where his younger brother from Ravenclaw walked into the Slytherin dormitory.

So that's one reply I made to someone. This Professor Zeke then tried to be nice to my character since he has a broken leg (and is somehow in Hogsmeade) but my character swore at him, I think, and he dropped Hickory and left him to be in pain :D

It's not so much the situations that makes it WTF, it's my writing also because it's so bad. At least back then it was (Thank God I improved, right?). The horrible grammar makes it ten times more amusing!

Oh, dear. My tummy hurts from laughing at all of your posts.

One of my many WTF moments:

Starting a thread with a new member (whom I thought to be sweet, nice and we would clique in writing) and not even two posts in, the restaurant where both of our characters are eating turns into an S&M club. The chair where my character is sitting uses magic to become into a bed. My character's clothes disappeared and she is chain to the bed with a gagged. His character drops his self and looks like him in real life and to topped it all off he has a 75 inch... Well, I think you'll get the idea.

I didn't know what to do :( Aside to laugh hysterically at the madness that I was reading xD

Right now, I'm RPing in a thread about three dwarven pirates. The WTF moment of the thread are the characters themselves - they are of the 'completely insane and bonkers' variety. One has a live duck as a hat/companion/navigator, for example. While the story itself hasn't really taken off yet - we're still at the docks - it's probably the most fun I've had in a thread in a while.

The complete ridiculousness of the characters makes it feel very Three Stooges-ish, but with a heavy fantasy twang.
