Because I'm messing around on Elements for giggles. Sharpening up blurry pictures; what's your preferred method?

Underpainting and cutout filters in tandem. It adds a bit of texture, a quick and easy sharpen and tones down contrast. A paint daub filter and gradient map were used in addition for (2b), for color and to just bring out some blurred features while have it also be... sort of dreamy?

    Pictures (1a) (2a) I started with, pictures (1b) (2b) I ended up with.

Usually I just use sharpen, however on some photos the results just end up pixely. In that case, I use unsharpen mask. It's a little trickier to get the hang of, but it's actually a much more powerful tool and great for lower quality blurs because the results never have those awkward stray pixels.

Sharpen and I fade it to the place I want if it looks odd. Sometimes, though, if it's too pixely, I might use something like smart blur and than sharpen oooor sharpen, smart blur and a layer mask so I can have the smooth parts I want, but still keep the sharp edges.

I basically do the same thing with the whole adding a layer that sharpened with the filter then using opacity to where i want it... sometimes if it looks weird I'll either high pass filter and place with opacity on soft light, or sometimes even play with the topaz clean filter.
