I've been having some bad luck with the Writing Challenges and I can't help but wonder if there are certain techniques or styles that one should consider. I don't necessarily want to create a topic that says "do this this and this and you win", as it's gaming the system. I'll start, here are some things that I've found: Length of your entry actually doesn't matter. Voters are willing to read anything under about 10,000 words. Having a short entry when others have extremely long entry doesn't net you any votes. Be sure to answer the writing prompt. Writing about something tangentially related probably will cost you votes. Use proper capitalization, grammar, and spelling. Doing these things doesn't necessarily gain you any votes, but it might cost you some if you don't. I was very surprised to find that the winners of the Writing Contests always seemed to be the longest entries.
