Everyone I know who makes graphics often say that they have a certain style for their images. For some it’s a particular coloring, others it’s a use of some kind of stock usage. I have even seen a pretty consistent text style that intertwined all of people’s pretty shinies. When I browse some peoples galleries I see definite styles in some, and others look kind of like mine. In my opinion, I really don’t have a particular style. Going through all of the stuff in my gallery and then the extra left over in photo bucket when I was really bored the other day made me realize that there is really not much that ties my graphics together.

The only thing I could think was a favor to darker colors, but that does not really count. I don’t really know why my stuff comes out so differently, possibly because I just throw a bunch of things together until it looks good. Generally I don’t start off with a plan, because if I do and it does not come out I get pretty darn mad. So I whip out some brushes and textures and just mess with the coloring until I am happy.

So I wanted to know what other people thought. Do you have a particular style? Do you plan to do something to ‘fit the style’? In your opinion, does everyone inherently have some sort of style of his or her own even if it is not easy to pick out? And, do you have anything to add!

Apart from my graphics all being pretty poorly done, I don't think there's a trend. I went through all the images on my Photobucket and was impressed by the number of graphics I'd made xD So I made a portfolio and chucked them in.

I noticed two trends: I almost always have to have a quote (in fact, I have a quote in every single character signature) and I usually have three pictures of my character in the signature. And, almost without exception, I do borders. Graphics always look incomplete without them, to me.

Other than that, my hunt made me feel that although I have produced some rubbish and I cannot compare to many of the amazing people on this board I actually have done some stuff I'm proud of.

I'm least happy of the most recent graphic I've made D=

I've done bright ones, dark ones (I do lean towards dark), simple ones, really busy ones, ones with people, ones without people, ones with textures, ones without textures, ones with fancy fonts, ones with plain fonts and so on.

Maybe there is a really strong trend and I've never noticed! =O You'd have to check my portfolio to see ;) I'll return the favour tomorrow.

...If you continue to be so hard on yourself I am going to have to hit you

I agree with you having a semi style, but not really a very concrete one. They all seem to fit....but at the same time there isn't anything that stands out to me as 'oh yeah that's an Emma thing'. I kind of think of it as if I didn't know who made it, I would be able to have a pretty good guess about who did just based off of what it looked like :p

I guess I should change my title, the thread is not really about HEY TELL ME MY STYLE but I kind of am just wondering about what people think about them in general

I don't know that I have a specific style, a lot of the things in my gallery (and that I've made in the past) really vary because I don't want to get stuck making the same thing over and over again. XD It's boring.

I do post lyrics on my graphics, I do spend hours making sure the layout looks good, and I spend the most time picking out a font that not only matches the style, but has correct kerning/tracking (spacing) because otherwise I'll go crazy. XD I may or may not be a type nazi.

    >.>

But uh, yeah. Styles. I don't know that I've found mine, yet. But I'm having a lot of fun experimenting. XD What I make for forums or myself has become my escape from what I make for my classes.

I go through obvious shifts in my style, which I don't really notice until I've started in on a different style. I don't really follow much in the way of trends (though I'm currently trying a hand at the two-photos-text-on-transparency deal, though I'm not sure how I feel about it yet), but pick up ideas here and there. I think, for the most part, my style tends to be identifiable, if only within the board it's being used (i.e. alongside others' graphics).

I myself go through a lot of "periods" in my graphic making. I had a blue & gray period that I got out of a few months ago...basically it was a darker time for me. Now I'm all about light, bright colors that pop and weird textures...which works for me because I love making abstract work.

I find some of my best textures when I'm randomly on Google, weird I know but that's how it happens most of the time. I also add lyrics or quotes to my work as well as boarders, I agree with Emma..it feels weird if I don't.

See, you are one of those people where if I saw something, I could guess that it was yours.

I am not trying to say that all of your stuff looks the same, not at all, but I feel like you have a specific style that is easy to pinpoint.

I tend to go through phases where I like using a specific technique and do it a lot. But I don't think I really have a graphics style, now, so much as I have a few things I like to use a lot - specific coloring techniques, for example, or fonts, or textures. Maybe the only thing I would count as a stylistic choice is use of negative space? It's a hard thing to pin down, because I shift around a lot.

ETA: But it is true that some people do have one. Waaaaayyyy back in my sim game days, I knew someone whose signature was the soft gauss glow technique - it was very pretty, and it was always immediately obvious when something was hers.

I go through phases and when I'm between phases it seems like all my artwork is just dull and boring. My last phase was gradient use, I remember making something in photoshop and then realizing that a technique I used I could use with colors all over my sigs. It really rocked and I got really good at it. But now suddenly I'm over it and I don't know what next so I don't like any of my graphics being made at the moment.

Another thing I noticed is I usually have one stand out picture of the character in my sig and then a faded out one. Usually the stand out is on the left side and the faded is on the right. Weird that I didn't even notice it until I went through my sig collection as a whole.

I don't think I have a style, at least not yet. I make signatures FOR people, and they usually have a specific theme/color-scheme/etc. in mind. I try to experiment too, instead of grouping all the pictures together in the middle, and adding some text ALL the time. I guess, looking through my stuff, I lean more towards the 'softer, flowy' type of stuff. But I do all sorts of things. Like, I can do grungy/emo-y too. But some of my more dark ones, too, are still pretty... elegant I guess. :/ But that's not *really* a style.

On the graphics community I'm in, they define their top ranks of artists as having a definitive 'style' so I guess I'm not up to that sort of rank yet. :p

I mean that brings up another question. Does having a specific style mean that you are better than someone who experiments? I mean, the way I make what I make is just messing with things until I feel happy about what they way it looks. I dont USUALLY go into it with anything specific in mind. I dont know....*ponders ponders*

    Yeah... I experiment a lot. O_o

I actually feel it's sort of dull when I see the same sort of stuff again and again. But that's not 'style' that's just lack of creativity. Actual 'style' I can see in the GOOD graphics-makers' stuff. Like, it's not repetitive nor boring yet you can tell when it's so-and-so's graphics, it's unique.

Ahhhhhmmm... actually depends on what I do...
I really follow the inspirational flow and aim. By aim I mean if I'm doing a sig or banner for someone or is it my own experimenting. Oddly when I do something for myself I tend to experiment but when I'm doing something for others I try to go 'in their heads'. lol I guess that depends on inspiration of the moment.

Other than that I'm not sure I have a style lol

I don't really quite know. I think I'm the sort that goes with whatever I feel like at the moment.

Right now, I like Selective Color. :D

I do believe in graphics having a certain style.

And i agree with your point that Destiny is one of those people that has one. Not that i find it bad or anything, because her graphics are really nice. But i could definitely pick out certain graphics as someone's work if they stick to that style.

Thesescars also has a pretty consistent style - which in my opinion, still keeps his graphics amazing.

Do i have a style? I don't think i'm that skilled yet. To make a name for myself as an above average graphic maker, i'd need to feel comfortable with all styles and then pick out one thing i'm good at. At this point, i still have a lot of work to do.

I selective colour everything - usually the same kind of colouring, but I'm not sure how to describe it - and everything has to be sharp. I use a lot of scratchy, grungy textures on darker images, like here, and I often combine them with orangey light textures just so it doesn't get too monochrome... sometimes I'll put them on colour images too, but more rarely.

I blend images together sometimes but I don't have the steady hands necessary to be skilled at it, so my signatures are often two images side-by-side... if they're the same image repeated, I'll do one colour and one black-and-white. When I do blend things, it tends to be one photo with a white background on top of a load of textures like this rather than anything complicated... blending backgrounds is too hard.

I'm pretty boring as far as text goes. I use the same fonts a lot and give everything a thin opaque drop shadow. Lately I've been getting into gradients too.

Yeah, as you can tell by the examples, my graphics are very repetitive and uncreative XD I wish I experimented more but I'm a creature of habit and it takes a lot of handholding to break me out of my comfort zone.

I don't suppose it matters much, though, because the only reason I make graphics anyway is so that my characters can have pretty signatures and avatars - if I didn't roleplay, I wouldn't bother doing it at all.

Hmmm... I really like to try new things but I find I really like simple designs with some text in some blank space and there is one concentrated area of image in another area. Colour wise, the only preference I have is using black and white contrast for text but I think I like to change things up a bit. I guess when I make graphics I try to style it towards its purpose. For instance, for signatures and avatars I try to make them express the personality of the character so I guess my graphics express more of the style of my characters than they do of myself.

I feel like my graphics are all over the place. I spend a lot of time looking through tutorials to try out a new technique and whatnot, so I feel like I'm constantly changing one thing or another about my 'style'. As of late, I've been into bright light textures that I obtain from deviantart. It seems almost a bit lazy to me xD but it does add a nice effect when wanted.
