I'm not very judgmental when it comes to buttons. As long as it doesn't look like somebody scribbled the site's name with the paintbrush option from MS Paint, I'll probably give the site a look. I'm a big fan of GIF buttons, too... They move, and if people do it right, they're a little entertaining :)

It kind of irks me when people make a very professional-looking button but it doesn't match the site color scheme, though. I guess that's just me being a perfectionist and all, but if you're going to make something that you plan to use to advertise your site, shouldn't it reflect what your site is? Iunno. That's my two cents x)

much like with a forum layout, i am drawn to an attractive, well-done design when it comes to buttons/codes etc
really, theres no excuse not to have decent graphics, because there are people readily available with the skills you do not quite have, willing to help you with graphics.
the fact that you havent bothered to plan your site, or acquire graphics assistance to help make it look great only shows that you will probably neglect other aspects of your site too, and care more about your idea than releasing a great idea that as a product on the whole, can be enjoyed by all

i mean, think about it. if people wanted to play at a very basic, unflattering place, we would all just buy a cheap notepad and write in that, or even RP via email and messenger. not to say we dont already do that, but generally most of us are at forums.

i may sound pretty harsh but that's how i see it. honesty is key, no?

I'm a judger. I certainly will click on a pretty button because I expect a pretty site... I also expect a site I can read so I'm often very disappointed when the button text is larger then the text on the site.

Animated everything is distracting to me but sometimes it'll get me to click but it has to be pretty good for me to even care if it's just *flash*Site name*flash*Picture*flash*blood*flash*Join US WE'RE AWESOME*flash*Site name*flash* etc then no. If it's glitchy at random and it's for a horror site or a site that has something that goes weird then it will intrigue me to click.

Graininess, poor made buttons, buttons that tell me nothing about the site - definitely out. I don't click them AT ALL.

The chances of my clicking are greatly improved if the button is stunningly eye-catching. Much more so than a SKIN being the same. Animation helps. :p
