I'm just about wrapping up the work that needs to be done on my new board, but now I've run into the problem that I've been avoiding the whole time. What am I going to name this thing? It's now something that I really have to sit and think about now because I can't even request graphics or anything without a name.

So how do you guys do it? Do you just have an idea and then the perfect name gets shot into your brains with cosmic rays, or do you have to sit and think over a name that you like for your site?

I generally come up with the concept first and then pick a name later. If the RPG is based on a franchise or preexisting universe, I can always pick something appropriate to that setting. For custom environments this can be much more difficult and it often requires more thought. I usually try to focus on a location, or a theme, or an organization that defines the RPG and makes it unique.

The name should hopefully clearly depict the topic of the RPG. If it does not, people may not be initially interested in learning more about it. Avoid being too vague. If the name isn't very clear, then pick a tag that works well. The tag should be a handful of words or a phrase that concisely details what the site is about.

I just call every one of my boards "HI THIS IS MY BOARD WELCOME PLEASE SIT DOWN AND FEEL FREE TO ENJOY SOME OF THE OREOS I LAID OUT"

It really takes the pressure off.

Plus then you never have to create new site-specific images. Brilliant!

I was having a hard time naming my newest site the name never came to me no matter how hard I thought. I wanted a site where you can Google it and you won't get 1,000,000 search results. Out of the blue I thought why not imagine a situation that would happen in the rp. A character said " Welcome to __ '' and I ended up liking it and I named my site that. Even though others may not like it.

I've heard of people going to naming sites or using word in different languages.

Oh naming. I LOVE naming. So far I've named three boards. Here was the process:

Keep Running-- A fandom board based on a concept album "Keep Running" was one of the repeated phrases in the album and the setting had a rag-tag group of rebels against a dystopian government. It captured the fandom and the premise perfectly.

Mazikeen-- An original board about the descendants of human and supernatural mixing. Mazikeen is actually from folklore, it's a supertural creature who loves to party and born from the coupling of humans and demons. The board was grittier, centered around more young folks and nightlife so it was a great fit. I further worked the name in the setting by naming places and objects after Mazikeen.

Bordertown-- A fandom board based around the series by the same name. As far as I know, no active Bordertown RP forums exist out there, so why reinvent the wheel? The subtitle I'm using "Where Magic Meets Rock and Roll" is also taken straight from the books.

I smash silables together. If I like it. Voila, I have a name.

Generally, I go for corny and cheesy. I have no idea why... But it seems to work. If not, I take whatever it's about, and just shove it in. But honestly.... It's just a site name to me. It isn't the focus of my game, what I write for the setting and plot is. If someone isn't going to look at my game because of a name, I figure that those are the people I probably wouldn't get along with 100% and not let it bother me.

And for how nonchallant that I sound over this... I really stress out over it as well. Once the stress has reached a certain point, I just stop caring and go: "Here, have a name. Chocolate covered peanuts."

After I've settled on the premise of the game, I'll pick a name. I usually use idioms and the like. =D I keep it short, I don't like using names that are basically a sentence.

Depends on the setting of the site really. Usually I just name it something that has to do with the setting or the plot. Though I so want to make a board and name it "I Haz Cookies" or "Cookies Are So Yesterday I Haz Cupcakes"

I actually used to dig into my Breaking Benjamin CDs for lyrics as most of them were gritty, real or overall intense. It worked for a lot of horror sites or realistic 'street life' sites. Now I usually just pick something that catches my attention and others attention. Make sure you never spell it wrong though, I'm always picky I guess?

Oh yeah...I'd also suggest having a couple of different choices, since the one you might want might not be available. Depending on how you are hosting.

I've been lucky. The games I've had to name have been in fictional locations, so I just used the names of their settings. *points* Initium and Escova. . . of course Initium pt.2 is actually named Initium: Exodus, but that's a setting as well as a sort of plot indicator. There's an exodus going on, and it involves a spaceship appropriately named the CRV Exodus. :p Escova has expanded to include another location off the island, Qandyr, but the focus remains on the island of Escova, so it still works.

I'm not entirely sure what I'd do if that method wasn't appropriate for a game's title.

I go with song names and lyrics that I feel fit the plot.

Iv always just used like song names or lyrics when I name my sites. Disturbed is usually a very good band to go by or like a perfect circle, well those are the bands I like Lol. I always have a lot of trouble with this to, its one of those things you really dont want to mess up on cause the name is what really draws people in in my opinion. Its a make or break type of thing.

Well it's all about inspiration and usually what inspired the site in the first place. For example, Tomorrowland came from the idea my rp was set in the future that never was, the world how we saw it in the late 90's and it was named for Walt Disney's vision of the future that never came to be. For Before Time, I was listening to music while typing up the initial ideas for the site, hoping it'd help me channel the right muses, but there was one song in particular, a remix of the SNES Jurassic Park theme from OC Remix called "Before Time" and I thought, how much power there was in those two little words and how much it made you think about the prehistoric era. So I went with that.

My suggestion is look at the graphics, music and source material that helped to create your site, think about the world and themes you're trying to establish and see what comes to you.
