Okay so i recently read the Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy, and yes while it is full of sex...and I mean chock full of steamy sex scene the majority of which after the first book I skimmed past to get back to the fundamental story, it was still an interesting read.

However looking online I've seen this insane hype about it because it is being made into a movie, and seen so many articles on who should play who,. or why it is inappropriate and how the movie industry can even call that a film. It hasn't even begun casting and already it is being referred to as one of the worst things possible for the movie industry. Kind of a high assumption to me, especially when it hasn't even been cast yet. Let alone actually made it onto the big screen.

Now for those of you who haven't read it here is a brief synopsis of it:
    • The plot traces the relationship between recent college graduate Anastasia Steele and manipulative billionaire Christian Grey. Steele is required by Grey to sign a contract allowing him complete control over her life as well as a non-disclosure agreement, something that he has required from all of his previous submissives. Upon learning that she is a virgin, Grey agrees to have sex with her in order to prepare her for later encounters, fully intending that the contract would be signed. As she gets to know him, she learns that his sexual tastes involve bondage, domination, and sadism, and that childhood abuse left him a deeply damaged individual. In order to be his partner, she agrees to experiment with BDSM, but she struggles to reconcile who she is (a virgin who has never previously had a boyfriend) with who Christian wants her to be, his submissive and a to-do-with-as-he-pleases partner in his "Red Room of Pain"
This however does not even begin to cover the backstory behind everything and the way the relationship grows and evolves into something so much more it really is a very romantic story, in my opinion so I do not get the entire ngativity over one aspect of the book which is the male main characters sexual...preferences, not sure how it would be stated.

    Discuss!

Edit: Upon re-reading my question is not very clear so the question at hand is this, really why do people who have not read the book or who have feel the need to already state this is a horrible film venture and it should not be done.

First off... OMG! Christian Grey! I love this book. I don't care what any one says, It's just pure awesome. Okay now to the discussion....

When I first read this book, I was giggling and there were some parts that made me go "ugh.. twilight" cause everyone should know this started off as a twilight fanfiction. Now, There are a lot of people that say this book is just demeaning to women. In my opinion, this is not. It takes a lot of courage to let a man do what he pleases with you (Btw... he isn't like some beating and controlling spouse.. okay? I was raised around controlling and abusive men. that would be my father) and men do this just as much as women. I love this book. it's great and it's refreshing. :) I will shut up because of spoilers.

OMG Yeah do not ruin it for other people but that is my point exactly right there. The book has this amazing back story and romance in it that makes you feel like a wanton woman again reading it where you can giggle and be like oh that's so sweet I wish...then other parts where you are like yeah no way. I read the entire trilogy in three days and loved, it what I do not get is the criticism and negativity surrounding it because of one part of the book series. Which turns into a minor part of it later, they have more "vanilla" relations than anything kinky in the second and third books and there is so much more of a back story being brought out and his past being explained. Personally I cannot wait for the movie to see how they adapt it, and who they choose as Christian for sure. I am just completely against the negativity surrounding one aspect of the series instead of focusing on the bigger picture that comes from the story.

hm, sounds like stuff Megan Hart writes.

yeah...no comment. They're making the host into a movie too. So...I don't think it says much for the movie industry. They'll grab at anything that has followers these days.

I never got into the Host, the synopsis wasn't even something that held my attention and I have no idea what the book is really about but if there is a fan base for it I guess they gotta snag it then.

It's not the sexual preferences that make me WTF all over about this book. It's the fact that this is straight up abuse MASQUERADING as a BDSM relationship. I mean, it stems from Twilight, which features many abusive boyfriend scenarios painted at TRU WUV, so it's not a shock, really. I don't mind a nuanced story about sex OR abuse, but wrapping them up and calling it sexy, good or aspirational (in any fashion) makes me want to puke.

I had never heard of him Googled, and wow he is yummy! I want to Aleksander Skargaard as Fifty thought because he just exudes the personality for it, controlling, overbearing, but with something deep inside you know waiting to come out the hidden compassion. He's not like that on Trueblood, but I think he could pull the role off. I think it was posted somewhere though Ian Somerhalder really wants the role too.

Actually no one said it was any of those here I am pretty sure, I don't see it as an inspirational story but I do say it has a good back story to me. The story fo them learning about each other and falling in love despite the differences between them is good, because come on no one has a straight wonderful relationship and never fights or disagrees, or ends up telling the other person What the hell you pissed me off. If you do then it is highly liely someone is always compromising for the other.

Not here, explicitly, but all over the rest of the friggin' internet. If I hear one more person say they want Christian Grey, I might scream. HE IS AN ABUSER. I don't care if he's got a tragic history and this story puts up the notion that all he needed was one holy vagina to fix his broken heart, this is NOT BDSM, it's abuse.

On all other fronts, it's atrociously written and makes me sad for the publishing world.

    >.< lol I don't think anyone posted they want Christian Grey here so you're definitely safe on that and yes the writing style could definitely use some work, but have you even read the entire series? You really cannot judge the entirety of a story until you read all of it.

I think you guys should read Megan Hart. Just because her stories are dark with lots of explicit sex and romantic feelings, but they're not squishy happy ending romances...for the most part. Like read Tempted. Best book I've ever read.

From the first book, yes he is seen as an abuser, but you really have to read the entire series to understand. This series alone as saved marriages... how can a book that has a man that appears as an abuser, but there is way more to it. If you want an abuser, you should read Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty Series. I couldn't freaking read that book because I just... hated it.

I have not read the series (nor will I, most likely; I'm not the targeted demographic and what I have read so far leaves me disappointed with the way it was written), but I think that this is the most brilliant thing that I have ever read. I need to find a place to utilize this phrase.

I don't know anything about these books or the movie or romance at all but I just want to say that I would buy any audio book narrated by Gilbert Gottfried.

Hate to sound so bitter, but considering that Fifty Shades of Grey is essentially Twilight fiction with everyone made human and the names changed, then yes, I think Christian Grey is abusive.

Forcing Anastasia to sign a contract which allows him complete control over her entire life? Abusive. Parallels with Edward, who wants to control Bella's life.

Sexually assaulting Anastasia? Abusive. Parallels with Jacob.

Yes, people who come from abusive homes do sometimes end up abusive themselves, but there is a fine line between tact and the lack of it, and I don't think it was handled very well here at all.

Not to mention that E. L. James got BDSM culture completely wrong. In BDSM, it's the sub that sets the rules. So technically, Anastasia should be setting the rules, but as sex apparently isn't her thing, why would she otherwise engage in BDSM?

There you go. Plot pulled apart in one quick paragraph.

I am assuming you never read it because you obviously don't know the plot at all since the plot isn't about the BDSM, this is the entire point made in my first post the plot revolves around them shaping their lives together, they get married and even have kids. BDSM is a sideline on a much bigger picture. And you prove my point right there with judging something not fully read or understood. You completely judged it off of someone stating it was off of Twilight, when the reality is it started as a Twilight fanfic, but the first book is the only book that had any of that original fanfic converted into it.

If you truly wanted to pull the plot apart you need to actually know the entirety of the plot to do so And have accurate facts.
