So... I can't get the idea out of my head and as they say - strike while the iron's hot right? There's really no ETA on when this thing would go live - it could be a month or two before I get the site coded, stuff written and launched, but I'm curious to see if there's any fish that are biting first before I make another board.

To the point! Yes - Dresden Files! (That'd also be a close cousin to World of Darkness for any other folks out there not keeping up with this book series.)

I keep seeing this request pop up, but not many seem to answer it. So, I would love this type of board - but my ideas are to take the world (meaning no canons!) and turn the time on the clock back a few (maybe hundred) years or so.

I realize the whole debate going on in the forums right now, but we'll give this a go anyway because well - it'll be a historical fantasy at best (because it's not like incorporating vampires and magic into the world is historically accurate either). My apologies to anyone that finds that offensive. :)

I'd like to see the Dresden Files set in:
    1920s America (Prohibition Dresden!).
1940s America (yes, that'd be WWII folks)
maybe even... American Revolution Dresden Files?
or possibly... Civil War Dresden Files?

The main reason why I'm throwing those time periods out there specifically is because those are the ones I think would lend to an interesting conflict within the world setting (both on a "mundane" level, as well as the "supernatural" level).

Strike the above (as if the lines weren't enough). We're doing this straight-up modern day style now. :)

    So... thoughts?

I would be interested, if only because I'm building a similar forum myself right now - except for the historical part. (Why didn't I think of that? - it's ingenious!) But mine is based on WoD. So yes... yes... I'd be most interested...!

LOL. Well, the historical aspect is because they had mentioned a few things in the books about the way the Council sided during the war, plus with as structured as they are, I think it'd be interesting to see how strong some wizards hold to that, like the Merlin and Wardens versus other thoughts, not to mention the Summer/Winter courts and all the Vampire courts.

(Any other takers out there up for a Dresden Files board?)

If I end up with enough time, I would totally join! I love the Dresden Files universe, and it would be a blast to play around in it. :)

I'll probably be one of the few people here who thinks that Dresden Files is awesome because it's modern fantasy, not historical. Sorry, I guess I have a general dislike towards historical stuff. The recent past isn't that wonderful, if you're trying to realistically portray it, and glorifying it is as bad as... Well, it's bad.

Finally another person screaming for a Dresdan board. I absolutely adore the Dresdan Universe and would love one set in it. With that said I think I personally would prefer to see during modern times. While I hear what your saying about throwing it back in time and exploring how things were a couple hundred years ago I personally love where the story is hanging right now and is rife with potential. I do agree going no cannon and in a different location.

My two cents, for what there worth, is do the modern board with a flashback section. but that's just me.

Hm... I don't -mind- doing modern fantasy either. I was just thinking that seeing it set during that time frame would be interesting, what with the different things alluded to in the books. And that's why this was posted in the interest check section rather than as a straight up "hey we're doing it" board. :D

@Atroposian I never said I was intending to glorify it. Truthfully, I think a lot of people all over the globe (Axis and Allies alike) did some shady things to get their side to win, which would have played in part if they had actually discovered supernatural creatures could be bargained with. But in any case, it seems like there's less interest in a historical setting than there is for modern day anyway. :)

@Maverichero maybe a flashback section would be interesting. I was considering letting the Black Court become more of a thing if it was more historical than modern, since the Dracula book wasn't all that popular until the film came out in 1931 (plus time for it to soak in and everyone to go hunting them...), but if I do modern day fantasy then it'll probably be just the world without the canon characters and little Black Court since most would have been exterminated by now and that wasn't something Dresden managed to do by himself. :D

So, to modern fantasy then, ladies and gents? *ponders* It's probably more feasible to have this done in a shorter period of time then anyway, b/c historic would take me hours to research the possible ins and outs alone of what was going on.

Sorry if I came on a bit too strong, Benihime... I just really love the modern setting. Do you know about the paper and pencil, tabletop, dice-rolling RPG books that were released for this? My friends and I played it and had a unique story set in Philly that was amazingness. I absolutely love their system. Of course, dice-rolling would get clunky on a board.

Regardless, one beautiful thing that I loved about the gaming books: you had to come up with a concept and all the characters were already interconnected through previous stories and adventures. Led to having a solid foundation before you even started gaming, and a history to draw upon.

@Atroposian No worries. If I didn't want opinions, I wouldn't have asked for them. I woulda just made the board the way I wanted to make it in the first place and been all "Deal with it or don't join". :D

And yes, I'm totally familiar with the clunkiness of tabletop games on a forum setting. Rapier Wit -is- a tabletop game in a forum setting (if you ever heard of 7th Sea). It's always hard to translate one to the other without getting too detailed on the rules (since forums tend to be more free flowing) or too free on the rules (since it leads to crazy OP chars, unless you don't care about that sort of thing). Never did see the Dresden Files RP book though, but I heard about it from one of my members on RW. I was just going to pull the general ideas out of the books and fill in the rest as I went along.

Well... Rules I wouldn't borrow, but maybe the templates (general description and feel) and some of the limitations on powers and abilities, to prevent OP characters... Though, of course, forums now a days have a way of self-regulating that, and character applications are an excellent way to check and keep people in line. :p I'd join, or at least give it a really good look-over... And then affiliate, maybe?

Its funny the day before you posted this I was in my local game shop and was flipping through the RP rule book.

My opinion is to basically follow the line your on in regards of borrowing from the books. takes notions and themes but leave out the technical bits. those should stay on the gaming table. I dont know about others but I am not a fan of stat/dice based forum RP. I like the free flow of it.

and Atroposian is right that while you should do what you can to prevent OP players communities have really stepped up and self regulated. It's nice to see.

I would stick the game to the books personally.

I'd be up for joining this board depending on what route you go. Dresden has been one of the best modern fantasy series I've ever read.

I was wondering what all your ideas to make it 'Dresden' without having Dresden. Not that I'm like dogging the idea, I know it can be done. I was just wondering how you plan to do it, regardless of setting. Or maybe give ideas or examples per setting if possible?

@cypherrae Mostly, it'd be about the Council, Merlin, Blackstaff, etc. for the wizards. I'd bring back the Red Court pre-downfall, since that was all based on Dresden's doing. It'd probably be more like an AU than a predecessor to what happened in the Dresden books. If it's still in modern times, the Black Court would have to stay... mostly dead. :D

I haven't decided on a plot outline past the sandbox though.

Locusts indeed. I may've even struck an interest in the boyfriend - and he almost never touches roleplays.
