They said there was an ounce of truth to the volumes of fiction. Tales from around the globe, from throughout time, and unified regardless of the barriers of culture or written word; what went bump in the night was universal. Just over a decade ago the vampires, angels, shifters, fae, demons, and thaumaturge’s cast aside their veils of secrecy. Before the eyes of the world they made themselves known, deciding that only now had man the capacity of understanding to accept that they were not alone in this world. But putting truths to the lore gave everyone the opportunity to rationalize this realization on their own terms. In that single moment, the world was forever changed. People reacted as you’d expect. Some wanted the powers of the supernatural for themselves, some wanted to see it destroyed, some wanted to accept these new members into the world, and even more stood silent, awestruck as their minds tried to come to terms with what had just happened. It’s a brave new world out there. …what is your story? Other Notes: 5280 Ways To Die is a supernatural collaborative storytelling game set in the city of Denver, Colorado. Explore the character you want to play. Explore the story you want to tell. Come and create the stories you have always wanted to tell. Play the kind of character you want (Angels, Demons, Fae, Humans, Shifters, Thaumaturges, Vampires, and more). Create your own lore (be the kind of supernatural you’ve always wanted to be – psychic vampires, fallen angels, or werewolves created by the gods themselves). Explore the stories you want to explore (create your own plots, get involved in other’s plots, jump into another character’s story by adopting a character tied to them, or simple react to the world going on around you) Add to the world (create locations in which to play, offer others means to connect to your character or others) An open ended game with open ended possibilities. 5280 is a writing-centric forum game. Nobody wins, nobody loses: the possibilities for any given scene are limited only by your imagination (and common-sense consideration of other players). "5280 Ways to Die" is a misnomer -- the game should be called "5280+ ways to RP!" 5280 is a true collaborative writing experience the likes of which are both addictive and rewarding. It's more than a game: it's a collaborative story! This is the 4th annual forum RPG run by a lean, seasoned core of Staff and players, any one of whom will gladly answer your questions or involve your character(s) in scenes from the get-go. 5280 offers no Global plot and no game system. What happens in 5280 is a reflection and result of the stories the players themselves create. Run a character from start to finish, into infinity, or kill him/her off in a spectacular death scene and start afresh with a new character -- the choice is yours! Control your level of danger. Most players opt for a "PM first before you put the whammy on me" policy but the levels of danger your characters face are entirely yours and inputted directly into your characters' profiles. Negotiate scenes OOC or, if 2 or more players can't agree on a scene's outcome, put it to a friendly, objective vote by the rest of the players and Staff. 5280 requires a certain degree of personal and creative maturity. If you're looking to "compete" and/or to "win" (and we certainly don't judge those who are), this is NOT the board for you. If you're looking to immerse yourself in a complex character and an alternate universe, create your own stories and collaborate with others on theirs, 5280 should provide a rich palette on which to contribute your own, unique vision. 5280 Ways To Die is your opportunity to explore the kind of writing you’ve always wanted to wanted to. March 1st, Just another day in the neighborhood, living your regular life, and yet... casting the occasional glance over your shoulder. You see, we're not alone. Worse, we know where the monsters are - who they are. Sure some of us wish we were like them, maybe even seek them out in hopes they'll bit us, scratch us, cast their spells on us, but not me. No, I'd rather chew off my own arm thanks. I can't help but be amazed at how stupid people are - how short their memories are. Have they already forgotten these... things prey upon us? Vampires, Demons, Werewolves, and nearly anything else you can imagine. They're out there, they're real, and for whatever screwed up reason we welcomed them into our nations, our cities, and our homes. What the hell were we thinking... -C.D.
Friday the 13[sup]th[/sup] Twelve guests arrived to dinner, and then one more Seems no one remembered to lock the door Problem was, who was the uninvited guest? No one seemed to know, to spite their best Another table set, another plate served And everyone’s suspicions most incurred Drinks were had, and desserts enjoyed Then a ruckus rose, and emotions toyed Accusations flew, and then a shout And then silence when the lights went out Twelve now stood where there were more A single body face down on the floor Panic ensued, and accusations trade Oaths were sworn, a pact was made Twelve guests left, not a word was spoken And to this day their agreement unbroken
"The test of any good fiction is that you should care something for the characters; the good to succeed, the bad to fail. How about having the freedom to explore the kinds of stories you’ve always wanted to explore? Does the idea of writing something meaningful to yourself and others get you excited? On June 14, 1999 United Nations General Assembly President Didier Opertti Badan stepped forth before the UN with six other individuals, each well-known and respected in their home countries. Before the world, President Badan announced that these six individuals represented secret and underground communities throughout the globe. Those six individuals were supernatural representatives of their respective species, and upon that day humanity at large became painfully aware that they were not alone in this world. On October 30th, 2000 President William Jefferson Clinton of the United States signed into law the Bill of Preeminent Liberty, granting full rights and citizenship to those supernaturals within the United States. On January 1st 2001 supernaturals throughout the United States were granted their equal rights. From that fateful day on October 30th, 2000, now celebrated as Liberation Day by supernaturals throughout the U.S., countries throughout the world began forming their own laws and legislative acts to emancipate supernaturals in their own lands. Currently, most supernatruals throughout the world enjoy equal freedoms with the rest of their communities. Only in underdeveloped nations, certain dictatorships and highly secular or religious countries are the rights of the supernaturals ignored. However, in spite of their freedoms, the supernaturals do face certain discriminations from portions of the community. As the supernaturals announced their presence to the world, independent research groups, occult observers and supernatural hunter groups also came forward to protest the dangers of allowing such things to exist alongside regular humans. Although this opposition mentality has dwindled to just a small percentage of the population, supernaturals have a way to go before the world at large accepts them for what they are. Three rules were put forth to the supernaturals: They would be held to the same laws as everyone else. Taking someone’s blood without their permission would be subject to punishments equal to assault or turning someone into a werewolf against their will would be treated as attempted murder. They would not make more of their kind without the explicate permission of the person they’re seeking to turn. As each attempt to turn a human into a supernatural isn’t guaranteed this was an easy rule to follow. They would each step forth to register with their home nations to be identified as a supernatural member of society. Although thoughts and concerns of “Big Brother” rippled throughout the supernatural community, unregistered supernaturals are treated especially harshly should they break any laws. As you might guess humanity had several reactions, some followed the supernaturals around like groupies, some deplored and detested them, some actively hunted them down, and others still stood up for the freedoms and rights of these individuals. Today there are secret organizations to thwart the supernaturals, just as there are special supernatural task forces in state and federal law enforcement and even in the militaries around the world. It’s a brave new world out there. This is your game... You just don't know it yet.
"Every human being has hundreds of separate people living under his skin. The talent of a writer is his ability to give them their separate names, identities, personalities and have them relate to other characters living with him." -Mel Brooks What haven't you done? What's that one character that's been lingering in the back of your mind now for ages? What's that one story you have yet to have had the chance to write? 5280 Ways To Die is about exploring what you as a writer and you as a player have always wanted to do. This is your chance to make that one particular character, to write in an open world where anything can happen. This is your chance to put something into words that will be read and admired by others. Come on over, take a look, talk to our players, and see if we can't provide you the ideal environment to pursue the kinds of characters and stories you're interested in writing. This is your game...You just don't know it yet.
