    Notes:

We are playing careers in an alliance, who are taking out everyone. The idea for this thread is 1) short posts, 2) as fast as possible, 3) don't wait for turns, just make a move 4) testing rapid fire. 5) Just have fun!

The arena this year is wintery, with most of the world covered in snow. The tributes have on clothes that keep them warm enough during the day, but when night falls they should find some type of shelter if possible. Another trick? The snow is poisonous, so they need to find water in other ways. There is a small spring by the Cornucopia that runs west and ends in a small lake. On the west side there is also a lake and a river. That's about it. There are caves and a lot of pine trees.

    Let's have fun!

    ==================

Spark’s eyes were only for the Cornucopia. Sure the world around her bore looking at, but no, she was staring straight at the weapons and the food. And knowing that she would kill immediately to get them.

The clock above her head was counting down across the sky... 50, 49, 48...

Rowan shivered, and not from the cold. This was it. It had been easy to put the arena out of his head during training but now everything was real. He knew he needed to grab some sort of axe and a bag or two. After that it was a matter of trying to stay alive long enough to get away from this place.

    The clock was ticking...43, 42, 41....

Anticipation throbbed in her gut. Spark had trained her whole life for this, for the moment to emerge victorious. The moment to kill them all and stand glorious in front of the crowds that would cheer her. Oh, for the moment, she had her alliance. Her little alliance. And they would serve her well.

Sparked expected their eyes were on the prize as well, but that was no matter. 34...33....32

Kit had heard from her mentors that the strangest things could pop into one's head in life and death situations. Here she was, tribute counting down the clock for the game where only one lived and all Kit could think about was how uncomfortable she was in pants. She would have much preferred to compete in one of the dresses she had worn for the pre-game events, minus, of course all the little pearls that could go bouncing off and better serve people tailing her. She felt...exposed.

    30..29...28...

She glanced to the side, just enough to see Spark and Rowan, both careers, both proficient. The strangest things could pop into one's head in life and death situations, but Kit was not dying today.

Spark swore the 60 countdown was the longest minute of her life. She wanted to go now, but every tribute knew to step off early was death. Instead she'd size up the competition one last time...

Next to her was the girl from 10. Spark didn't know her name. but she looked scared. Very scared. Spark could kill her on the way to Cornucopia if she pleased...

And next to her the boy from six who looked ready to piss in his jumpsuit. He might have just been cold, but Spark was sure he'd been shaking the entire time they'd been in the capital.

    27...26...25...

The longest minute of her life...

Rowan cracked his knuckles. He had to move. Standing on this circle, waiting for the clock to hit zero was killing him. He couldn't remember a time he had been more anxious. Even that one time, when the tree had started to fall the wrong way, the had known how to correct the situation. Now, he was stuck.

A quick look to his right caused him to chuckle. The girl from five looked confident, too confident. He'd have no problem coming up behind her and snapping that pretty little neck. Yes, he could survive this part of the day without a problem.

Kit closed her eyes and took a deep breath in and out. She only had a few seconds left to center and calm herself. Forget what she was wearing, focus just on her breathing. Panicking in deep water got you killed. Panicking in the Games would do the same. Just breathe, Kit told herself. Just breathe.

    10...9...8...

Standing on the small circle, it was difficult to get into any kind of stance, but somehow, Kit managed to slide her foot and shift her weight ever so slightly. Her pale eyes opened. She was ready.

He froze. It had begun. The games had begun and he had frozen on the spot. All around people were yelling. Then he heard it. The canon fired. It was as if an alarm had gone off in head and before Rowan knew what was happening, he was moving.

That girl from five was right there. A step later she had fallen. His hands were around her head. The neck snapped. The cannon fired. And finally, Rowan was in the game.

Spark didn't wait. She was straight for the Cornucopia, straight for the weapons. She was fast. She'd spent her life training for this and her feet flew like the wind, even over the white of the snow. The girl from 10 fell, but Spark ignored her. She could skill her later when her hands were around a knife or a spear or whatever other weapon she first grabbed.

And then she was there, and the knife was in her hand, and she was whirling around to jab it in the neck of someone stupid enough to come up behind her. She couldn't even say what district they were from, only that now they were dead. Two maybe, given the girl's size. Two, now that she looked closer. Two, who usually allied with One, but these two had been so damn snotty.

    She whirled again.

The signal sounded. Kit moved, straight towards the Cornucopia, as planned. She saw the girl from 10 move toward Sparks. Kit's ally pulled ahead and as the 10 tribute fell Kit bent down and snapped her neck, and got back on her feet in two swift movements.

It happened so fast that she didn't have time to process the significance of what had just happened. Two strides later and she at the Cornucopia, sliding in o take a place at Sparks' side and to cover her back. She didn't need a weapon to maim or kill. She'd grab something later. No distractions until the bloodbath was over.

There she was. Kit was one of her allies. And the one from seven Rowan. A strange group, but her own fellow tribute from one had made it clear he was going to pair up with men, and had take on his own little team of tributes. Spark's eyes glanced over to see him rounding the bend of the Cornucopia with one of teammates. They were going to have to battle for control of the thing.

    She didn't plan to lose.

Already some of the less brave tributes had taken off into the woods. Others were trying to decide if they wanted to risk the stash. The boy from eleven was heading right for her at full speed. Spark would stand her ground... and then jump out of the way as soon as he arrived.

"Be ready Kit," she growled under her breath.

Rowan made his way to the edge of the cornucopia, picking up two packs. The smaller one contained a few throwing weapons was wrapped around his waist. The larger was a backpack that he eased on. There would be time to search the backpack later, when they had some down time.

Rowan whipped around when he heard someone cry his name. His fellow tribute was on her back slowly bleeding out. The poor girl was only twelve but she had volunteered as tribute to save her pregnant cousin from entering the stadium. Sighing, Rowan realized what he had to do.

"Don't worry Willow. I'll all be over in a moment." And with that simple statement Rowan began to smoother the poor girl. Yes, it was a mercy killing, but she was a seven. He owed her a relatively peaceful death if the bastard that did this to her wasn't going to finish the job.

He came on faster than she would have thought, but Spark was ready enough. She moved right, but he went low and caught her left leg and both tumbled. She tried to roll, but he was on her, and stronger than she would have originally guessed. He didn't look the build of a muscle man, but there was wiry strength that must have been from climbing trees. Spark threw her arm around and tried to hack at him with the knife, but he caught her wrist and moved to throw himself on top of her...

Rowan saw Spark fall. It was going to be now or never that tested their alliance. He reached for a throwing knife in the bag on his waist. The cool metal was so sharp that it pricked his finger, causing him to chuckle. Well I guess I was going to bleed eventually. He thought as he watched the knife fly through the air. The blade cut into the guy's thigh. Hopefully the shock of getting hit would give Spark enough time to get the upper hand in their tussle. If not, maybe their alliance wasn't meant to do be.

He was on her faster than she could have expected and he pulled his fist back to punch her. She thrashed beneath him, throwing up an arm to block. She was strong too, but his throw still sent a shock of pain through his arm. Then suddenly she felt the grip on her wrist loosen and she didn't wait. She yanked her wrist out of his hand and swung the knife towards his throat. He jerked to the side, his attention shifted for the moment, but he didn't long forget about her. Spark threw her weight at him, using her feet to push off the ground and to her side where she swung low with the knife this time into his gut.

He scream and punched her in the shoulder. She gritted her teeth and twisted the knife, then yanked it out. He was raging now, thrashing his fists everywhere as though he knew he was going down and planned to take her with him. Spark squirmed away, and rose to her feet, her eyes scanning around her. There were other fights going on as well. The female tribute from eight down by the boy from one. And she saw another go down [M10] but she wasn't sure who he was. They'd find out when the lights in the sky told them that night.

She glanced over to see Rowan, then down at the dying tribute from 11, and saw the knife in his leg and knew. Rowan had saved her. The alliance was on.

Kit had been distracted from the alliance by an arrow whizzing past her face. A male tribute, another Career (she forgot what district except he wasn't from her own) had found a bow. This was bad. All three of the alliance were geared towards melee and short range.

Growling Kit sprinted towards him, pausing only to yank a knife out of some poor dead tribute and rand to meet him. She nearly got hit by another arrow by the time she got to him. Turned out he wasn't much for hand-to-hand-- a heartbeat later, Kit's knife was buried in his chest. Another heartbeat and she yanked it out and turned back to her alliance, standing over a fallen 11 tribute.

Kit slung the bow over she shoulder. It wasn't her specialty, but there was no way she was leaving a weapon for an enemy to use. If her teammates didn't want it, she'd destroy it. Calmly she walked towards Rowan and Spark.

((Sorry this is long, but I had to catch up!))

Adrenaline pumped through her. Standing on the pod, waiting for the timer to count down, Azzie's dark brown eyes looked over the frosty arena. Snow. She could do this. It got cold in 11 in the winter, she was used to it. Better than the people from 4, that would be sure. Snow could be tricky though. You could hid things in it. One misstep and your foot falls through a trap, or into a snare. But it makes it easy to track. Hard to hide your footprints.

    There! The gong!

Pushed into action, Azzie hurled herself forward, her long brown braid swinging behind her and smacking her in the face as she ducked down to avoid a flying knife. She should have cut it before entering the arena, this was no place for waist length curls. Funny to think that the one thing she considered an asset out of the arena could harm her here. The thick rope of hair would get caught on things. Someone could grab hold of it. Blast.

Seeing a backpack, she grabbed it as she rushed through the melee. There were bodies falling all around, the sicking squelch as weapons entered bodies, the gurgle and trickle of blood leaving them, the essence of life flowing out. Keeping her head down but alert, Azzie saw her chance. There! Two large crates had been knocked over by struggling tributes, making a little alcove against the cornucopia. Perfect!

Dropping to her knees, she hurriedly crawled between them, wedging herself against the cool metal of the cornucopia. If anyone found her, she'd be dead, but she knew it was her only chance. She couldn't run fast enough to make it out of the clearing alive, but in the snow she couldn't chance trying not to find a pack. Maybe they'd miss her.

Trying to not make any noise, she listened while the sounds of the fighting died off. She couldn't hear any talking anymore.... had they actually gone?

Slowly, Azzie straightened up so she could look over the box she was hiding behind. No one was in sight. Looking around for a moment, she stood up, and gently crawled over the box. Maybe she could make a break for it while the careers are distracted by the loot on the other side. They had to be over there, for she didn't see many on her side of the ring, the large piles of loot blocking her vision.

Walking to the edge, she peered around and stopped as she saw a group of 3 people standing there. Clearly a career pack. Pausing for a moment, she wondered if she should run for it quickly before they noticed her, but something stopped Azzie. Was... was that movement? Looking, Azzie saw a blonde girl, District 5 if she remembered right, start to move in the snow. She was wounded, but not dead yet. The girl struggled to her feet, picking up a discarded axe as she did, clearly planning on attacking the careers. Madness!

Not even pausing to thing, Azzie launched into action. Darting around the cornucopia, she tucked her shoulder down and ran straight into the girl from 5, knocking them both to the ground with a cry, the wounded girl dropping the axe as she did. Rolling around, for it now became a tug of war, a life or death battle. What had she been thinking?! She should have ran. Still, this was her one chance to get in with the Careers. She had to take it. Azzie was a realist, she knew that in this game only one walked out, and it likely wouldn't be her if there was a pack on her tail. Clearly she had to be in it to survive.

Kicking and punching, it was a mad scramble between the two girls, both fighting for life. But Azzie was stronger and not wounded, clearly the battle was in her advantage. Moving her head, so the punch aimed at her only grazed her ear, Azzie saw something, a rock! Punching the girl on the chin to distract her, Azzie scrambled off to grab the rock, the axe long forgotten, out of reach. Gripping it in her now slippery with blood hand, Azzie launched herself back on the girl from 5 and pushed her onto the ground, bringing the rock down square in her face with a sickening squelch and crunch. One. Two. Three.

Dropping the rock, Azzie leaned back onto her heels, still straddling the girl from 5's now limp body. So. This was what it felt like to kill a person, she thought as she felt a droplet of blood slide down her face. Strange. She didn't feel much of anything at all.

The other alliance, all boys, was forming up. Spark new her fellow tribute had been touting about how he was going to make a male pack and bring down all of them, and that he didn't need Spark, even though she was born and bred from a winner. Spark didn't need him though. He'd been a braggart and an punk the entire time she'd known him, and of all the games to volunteer for, she had to pick the same one as him. She resisted rolling her eyes as he and his team formed up. At least Kit had dispatched one of them.

"They'll be tough in the open," she muttered, holding her weapons and her ground. She caught sight of the girl, obviously from 11, tussling in the snow and almost laughed. She could kill her, easily. But eleven was known for climbing, and a lookout could prove useful.

"Grab what you want, and let's get that girl and get out of here. We need a plan if we're going to take them down." The Career pack was eyeing them as well.

Rowan turned as he heard the scuffle. Apparently he had only partially broken the girl's neck from five, if the angle her head was at was any indication. It didn't appear as though he'd have to finish the job though. Chuckling as the skirmish continued, Rowan started to gather a few more supplies.

A second, larger back pack was ripped on the ground. Inside looked to be some kind of blanket or sleeping bag constructed out of very thin, light material. He recognized it instantly as the gear used by the peacekeepers in his district. The goons hated being out in cold but they never looked cold. Figuring whatever it was, could keep him warm, Rowan threw the material into his back pack.

The girl from one was talking. Instead of responding, Rowan continued to walk around, picking up the things he wanted. He found a vest in one of the crates and threw it on over his uniform. The garment didn't add much in the way of warmth, but it did have a lot of pockets. Pockets, it seemed, were going to a commodity in this game as much of what could be used to carry things was either destroyed or lone gone, picked up by another tribute.
