    yeah I've been on his ass about staying hydrated but he's been taking pain relievers and they don't seem to be helping and he won't go to the doctor (can't afford it).

    Hmm. Have you looked for stronger pain reliever? What's he taking? Just keep bugging him about drinking water. In fact, go to a convenience store and buy one of those gallon jugs of water they have in the coolers and say, "Here, drink this." Don't give him an option not to! XD
