Anyone know why the server is down?

Posted by: TwilightDawn Jun 1 2008, 04:07 PM
it seems all non-paid-domain IF sites are down. z9, z7, z11, z15. All of it. I think the main server crashed and they're pussyfooting around trying to fix it.

Posted by: Deputy Dingo Jun 1 2008, 04:09 PM
First time in three months I've tried to visit my in-development site and it wouldn't work lol typical. Thanks

Posted by: TwilightDawn Jun 1 2008, 04:10 PM
Yeah. IF has the great ability to do that. That's why I'm gonna start using SMF and PHPBB3 and whatnot.

Posted by: Ali.inthejungle Jun 1 2008, 04:41 PM
Invisionfree had a bit of an emergency, from what I understand. Has anyone else heard this?

Posted by: SmathNa Jun 1 2008, 04:44 PM
Here's what's REALLY weird--the sites are working for some people, but not others. Huh... for instance, I can access z9 but not z11 or z15.

You're right, it is odd. I've been unable to access z9 all day. I just checked again to see if it was up, but for me it just doesn't work. :(

Posted by: stormyhearted Jun 1 2008, 04:46 PM
I'm not having problems with z9 or z11. rb_innocent.gif

Posted by: Ali.inthejungle Jun 1 2008, 04:51 PM
There it goes again... I was able to get onto my z15 board for about a minute before it gave me an error message. But the members in the C-box said they'd been on for almost twenty minutes.

This is a really strange problem, that it's cutting in and out like this for different people. Another person online suggested that IP addresses had something to do with it? I dunno. I just want it fixed. Haha.

Posted by: Issues In A Bottle Jun 1 2008, 05:16 PM
Is it still having problems? Because my board is z11 and it's working fine.

Posted by: MorganRise Jun 1 2008, 05:21 PM
It's fine for me now.

Posted by: Deputy Dingo Jun 1 2008, 05:23 PM
Mine's Z9 and it won't get past the first page...

Posted by: TwilightDawn Jun 1 2008, 05:27 PM
I still can't do anything.

Edit: On Opera or IE!

Me neither. I can see the front page (on Safari only - FF won't even let me view it), but nothign else.

Yup. FF is a no-go, Safari works for me... sorta. I haven't tried IE yet.

Posted by: Chexdex Jun 1 2008, 05:37 PM
I've tried all the browsers I have & none work.
I have Firefox, Internet Explorer, Flock & Safari

I can't much get on any of the servers except for a few seconds here or there before they crash on me and I can't get on. This is bull as far as I see it, I had to go through an entire offline pm system for 3 days and now this.

I agree. It is bull. And the support forum is even down, so there's no way we can even ask what the deal is.

Posted by: Manda Jun 1 2008, 05:54 PM
I hope this gets fixed soon. Grrr.

Don't freak out people; IF is doing what they can to deal with the situation. According to http://forums.theplanet.com/index.php?showtopic=90185 there was a fire that affected a lot of servers... I'm not sure if they're affiliated with IF, or if they're using IF's servers or what... But this is the information everyone is pointing to in regards to what's going on.

"Today at approximately 5:45 p.m., a transformer in our H1 data center in Houston caught fire, thus requiring us to take down all generators as instructed by the fire department. All servers are down.

We are working with the fire department, with our facilities staff on site, to assess the situation.

To keep you updated, we will send messages every 15 minutes in Orbit and here in our forum.

We have determined that no servers in the data center have been damaged. Nonetheless, they are down because power is out. Teams across the board are working to take appropriate action.

We will continue to keep you updated."

QUOTE
From Doug Erwin:
This evening at 4:55pm CDT in our H1 data center, electrical gear shorted, creating an explosion and fire that knocked down three walls surrounding our electrical equipment room. Thankfully, no one was injured. In addition, no customer servers were damaged or lost.

We have just been allowed into the building to physically inspect the damage. Early indications are that the short was in a high-volume wire conduit. We were not allowed to activate our backup generator plan based on instructions from the fire department.

This is a significant outage, impacting approximately 9,000 servers and 7,500 customers. All members of our support team are in, and all vendors who supply us with data center equipment are on site. Our initial assessment, although early, points to being able to have some service restored by mid-afternoon on Sunday. Rest assured we are working around the clock.

We are in the process of communicating with all affected customers. we are planning to post updates every hour via our forum and in our customer portal. Our interactive voice response system is updating customers as well.

There is no impact in any of our other five data centers.

I am sorry that this accident has occurred and I apologize for the impact.

Another forum I looked at said that "an issue at one of the datacenter buildings has knocked the domain system for IF and zetaboards offline. since your ISP remembers domain info for hours, this outage will not affect all users." Whatever that means lol. rb_tongue.gif

It explains why I can access all IF sites, and some of my friends can only access a few.

Posted by: TwilightDawn Jun 1 2008, 06:26 PM
So basically, what they're saying, is that we're screwed until about 5 PM central?

rb_tongue.gif

Posted by: Sunday Jun 1 2008, 06:30 PM
Maybe you guys are, but my sites are working fine. rb_tongue.gif Jk, jk. I wouldn't consider it getting screwed - none of the data is lost. If people want to get pissed about it and stuff, then sure, I suppose they have the right... But I'm just thankful the damage wasn't more widespread, and that we didn't have another Server 1 moment, you know?

EDITS~ I'm not saying you're getting pissed off, TwilightDawn - just for clarification. Because you don't sound pissed or anything. rb_tongue.gif Just speaking in generalities.

Posted by: TwilightDawn Jun 1 2008, 06:32 PM
rb_tongue.gif I only started doing this last november, but I heard about the server 1 incident. Just glad it's not that. Then I could have a solid reason to stick with SMF and PHPBB3 (Which I think I might do anyways because IF loves messing up. xD)

Posted by: Sunday Jun 1 2008, 06:35 PM
All things considered, IF is still a reliable server, at least to me. They experience some lags and down time, but all in all, it's pretty rare that it's more than a mere inconvenience. I can't speak for SMF or PHPBB3, since I've never tried them, but I'm sure they have their own occasional problems as well. And I think there are more users/more servers on IF, thus more of a chance for things to go wrong.

The same thing happened on GreatestJournal and InsaneJournal. GJ went down the toilet because the admin couldn't take care of it and there were too many people making journals for the server to handle... It really sucked because he was literally telling us to go make journals on InsaneJournal since he didn't care about GJ anymore. Ever since then, I've been much more openminded towards server downtimes. XDD I've experienced the worst of it and IF is nowhere near that level (...yet? LOL).

EDIT~ Oh, and it's the fact that IF is also still a free service. If I was paying for this crap, I'd be pissed, LOL.

Posted by: TwilightDawn Jun 1 2008, 06:38 PM
Yeah. Definantly yet. Especially with people still using If and neglecting ZB. So once it's an equal flow, all servers that Invision owns will be screwed. And there's also IPB on the side. So....hosting your own forums makes more sense, statistically, they would have much less downtime. With a very not well known host.

Posted by: Lenore Jun 1 2008, 06:55 PM
I can't access z11, z15 or z9 rb_dead.gif
I could access z9 and z15 earlier, but now I can't. It's quite odd. Hopefully I will be able to later.

Posted by: Ashaaa =] Jun 1 2008, 07:00 PM
I'm on one Z6 board and it keeps flicking on and off. Using Internet Explorer it won't let me see the site at all anymore [it did earlier very briefly] but Firefoz lets me on for short seconds at a time before crashing again for a while.

Luckily i just managed to squeeze a post i had already typed up on and posted it it the few seconds. Go me xD!

Also - one of my friends has the link to this site where you can see which Invision Free servers are up and which ones are down. I don't have the link on this compy though =[

Posted by: Sunday Jun 1 2008, 07:22 PM
Argh, now I can't get on z4, where my site is on. Darn.

Ashaaa =] -- here's the site: http://tachyondecay.net/php/bin/serverstatus.php

TwilightDawn -- I don't think InvisionFree is destined for failure... There may theoretically be less downtime and problems in lesser-known servers, but the lesser known the less advanced their technology is. Again, theoretically. IF provides a lot of services that other forum services don't have, or if they do, they only give it to paid accounts. That just makes sense; it's like that with nearly every product/service. ZetaBoards is still pretty new, so they don't expect everyone to go running to it. Right now it seems it's more like an option, not a necessity - for us or them.

Posted by: Ashaaa =] Jun 1 2008, 07:41 PM
thank you Sunday <3

Buut XD That site says Z6 is up, however it isn't working for me. Actually - it says all of the IF boards are up..

Posted by: Sunday Jun 1 2008, 07:56 PM
It might just mean the servers are online, not that they're showing up. Because they are working for some people.

Posted by: vision_afar Jun 1 2008, 08:11 PM
Z9 and z14 have been working for me all day so far. Luckily, my own board is on z14. Must be karma, considering z14 used to be down all the freakin time last year or so ;D But I do hope it gets fixed asap, it's rather irritating.

Posted by: TwilightDawn Jun 1 2008, 09:38 PM
I still wanna know why the purchased URL sites are still up. And not the free ones.

Posted by: Issues In A Bottle Jun 1 2008, 10:25 PM
I think it might be the type of internet you have. Fire Fox, Internet Explore, Safari, ect. I know Fire Fox works.

Posted by: TwilightDawn Jun 1 2008, 10:35 PM
I've checked on every browser on God's green earth except Safari. And it doesn't work.

Posted by: Melly Jun 1 2008, 10:39 PM
I haven't been able to get onto z6 or z14 all day, but with that said, I have a friend who was able to get on when I couldn't. Its kind of irritating but w/e

Posted by: Jalynn Jun 1 2008, 10:42 PM
I can't access any, I just managed to get on here. But I have friend from the UK who is moving about out site with no trouble.

Don't think so...

I'm a Brit with BT Internet; my z9 site was working fine until about 3 hours ago, now, nada.

It's been down all day for me. It doesn't even try to open it. It just says: "Nope. Go away. We don't work."

Posted by: Ali.inthejungle Jun 1 2008, 11:46 PM
I had it at around 3:00 or so, but now it's just gone down again. I was able to access it entirely through IE first, but not through Opera, FF, or Safari. Then it was available on all of them, but now it's down again.

Help... I don't think my head can take the back-and-forth.

Posted by: TwilightDawn Jun 1 2008, 11:50 PM

Posted by: xprincessgwenythx Jun 1 2008, 11:51 PM
It has to do with your service provider. If your provider hasn't registered the changes to the IF server then you don't get to look at the boards. Mine has been down all day. :(

Then how did I have it earlier? Because it isn't showing now, so I'm confused as to how that would be the case. :(

I am an active member on several invisionfree sites... and the only one who works is this one. Also the only one that doesn't start with the server name

eg: http://rpg-directory.com/ VS http://z6.invisionfree.com/RAMDOM

Kinda frustrating when t seems only my fellow aussie players can't access the site, but my american friends can. Although it apparently fades in and out but persistant refreshing seems to be working for them... hope it comes back soon. I was up til 1am last night trying to make it work

Posted by: TwilightDawn Jun 1 2008, 11:55 PM
Because ISPs are dumb. And they need to die.

Posted by: xprincessgwenythx Jun 1 2008, 11:56 PM
Because they shut off the servers at different times. So like it worked for a while, and then they shut it off and it depended on when it was turned back on and if your provider registered it or not. Or something like that. There is an article on IF about it. <.< which I can't read because it's not working for me, but my friend just read it to me. Her's is working.

Anyway, thanks for all your help guys. I guess now I'll go do something useful, like clean or do homework or something. Bah humbug. rb_tongue.gif

These things happen though. Even with paid servers, really. It doesn't bother me much.

Posted by: ameliakate Jun 2 2008, 12:31 AM
Can't post replys with it, comes up that you have blocked the IP address that its being used from....grrrrr

on the up side from the invisionfree site:

QUOTE

an issue at one of the datacenter buildings has knocked the domain name system for InvisionFree and ZetaBoards offline.

Since your ISP remembers domain name information for a few hours at least, this outage will not immediately affect all users.

Please note that even if you can not reach your board, no data has been lost and the server itself is fine.

We are working to bring up a backup domain name system for InvisionFree and ZetaBoards as soon as possible.

We will be using this downtime to work on Server 15 since we are still able to work on the machine through a direct connection.
After we complete work on Server 15, we will continue conversions on it.

today at 3.36:
InvisionFree domain service has been restored. It may take a few hours for your ISP to detect the changes.

I've actually been able to access all Invision forums, and have been for the past hour and a half. The only problem I've really had is that it'll go down for half a minute, and in the next refresh it comes right back. This has happened on both the z8 and z1 servers I've been on. So...

Posted by: Desire Jun 2 2008, 01:58 AM
mine still aren't working...

Posted by: bloodless soul Jun 2 2008, 02:24 AM
It doesn't matter what browser you're using, what ISP you have, etc... something is wrong with the forums themselves. Every so often they come back online, but not for very long before they bug out again and you can't get access to them. Sure it'll work for some people for some reason, but for the rest of us, we've just got to deal with it. But they really do need to work on these problems much quicker than they currently do.

Posted by: b e e x3 Jun 2 2008, 02:34 AM
Holy god, I guess i should have looked around earlier.
Alright, so I thought it was my computer. I screwed with all these settings, firewalls, cleaned my discs, did a system restore, restarted my computers, reset my motem, ALL this stuff. haha. I thought it was a server problem, but I didn't think it would last this long and be this widespread, and then the owner of my site said she could get on without any problems whatsoever.
-sigheth- screw my life. hahaha

Um no, that's wrong. If it was a forum issue then it would be with the individual forum and no one would be able to see it. It is clearly a server issue because it is universal

Posted by: Iulia Jun 2 2008, 02:48 AM
There are no issues with the servers. If you check the server status url, there is no problem with them.

http://rpgcollection.proboards27.com/

Animus explains really well what happened. IF/ZB aren't the only message boards that have been affected.

Edit: Geez people... this isn't IFs fault. Just take a chill pill and relax. Seriously.

Posted by: bloodless soul Jun 2 2008, 02:52 AM

Yes; last I heard, they were working hard to get everything working again, and I think they've gotten everything settled. Patience is a good virtue to have in a situation like this.

That was a pretty quick response, though they could have put a notice on the main homepage.
You see I've had no internet connection for a few days and I came back online to this. Burn.

Oiy...great...*headdesk*

Of course, I'm going to be one of the ones where it isn't working right for a while...first things work, then I get a bunch of 404 errors, then things work, then 404 errors...rawr...

Still, not leaving IF sites because no other sites seem to agree with my computer. Other boards have a tendency to lock it up or freeze when loading...

Its still pretty bad for my AOL. However for Firefox it works perfectly.

They're working for me, most of the time. z11, z15 and s3 seem to keep going down every couple of hours for a couple of minutes, though, which is a bit of a drag. They're down right now, for example... but I'm an eternal optimist. They'll be back soon and I can reply to my character request thread <3

I heard that one of the servers caught fire and about 2000 fourms have been down. Then a few are just down for matinence.

I thought this problem was fixed. I spent all week collecting back my members and assuring them that my forum was still alive. XD It was a pain in the ass. Glad their back up servers didn't get fried , I would of cried like a baby if it did.
