Debate Culture

Blog entry posted by stainsofpeach, Jul 25, 2012.

1. Read all entries before yours.
2. If the argument you want to bring forth has already been made, give credit to the people who made it as well, by referring to them or at least giving them a like.
3. If the argument you want to bring forth has already been argued against, give credit to the counter arguments by arguing against them, not against the OP.
4. Ignoring counter-arguments does not make them go away and it makes discussions circle!

About the Author

Little Laila makes fun of her students -- wait: writes about teaching, writing and life. That's better.

    7. If you've made an argument and it's not addressed in particular but the general side you're on has been addressed, don't bring your argument back up JUST because. The argument has been addressed even if no one quoted your damn post and replied to it because it brought nothing new to the table.
It creates an instant circle jerk of arguing over the same thing until one party runs out of fucks to give and this is what always seems to happen.

Not to mention.... not only read other entries but also try to understand what you are reading (basically what the other is trying to argue) :-/ because while what the person might be saying is perfectly clear, in a debate there's a lot of misunderstandings. (That's not to say I'm excluded because I've totally misread lots of things in there)

If you start out with "I didn't read the entries before me but ..." then just stop right there and go do something else.

    5. Have an argument, period, not just a big mess of words that don't really stand for anything
