Title: Question About Hosting
MishMoo - May 28, 2007 02:52 PM (GMT)
I hope this is an okay forum to put this in. There's nothing really of this sort here, but I figured I'm probably not the only webmaster here =).
My Dreamhost package ends next month and because I don't have more than $100 to pay for the next year and I have no desire to stay with them, I'm looking for a new company. It's such a pain because they appear to be literally hundreds of them out there! I've narrowed my choices down to four based off of reviews I've found through Google, other webmasters opinions and pricing. Here's what I have:
Powweb.com
Surpasshosting.com
Site5.com
Estarr.com
I don't need a lot of space. I own a fanlisting collective and that's about it. I might add a blog at some point but even that shouldn't take a lot of room. I don't even use wordpress or anything other "one click installation" things. I was just wondering if anyone had any helpful opinions about any of these sites or if you know of any nicely priced sites out there that you absolutely love. Thanks a ton!

Well I can't give you much feedback on the choices above. But I'd like to point you to something else. As you said it's a fanlisting. There are also sites out there who offer free hosting to fan based websites. One of my favourites is fan-sites.org (http://fan-sites.org/), I had my own gallery hosted there (but it was deleted because I didn't have time to maintain it), but they offer good things for being free. So maybe you'd like to read into that too.
Owh, and I've had a look at that Powweb one, that one looks really good. Putting that against the webhosting we have, ours looks like rubbish XD.

I don't know if my fanlistings qualify as fansites since there's no gallery/information, but it's definitely worth a shot! Thanks =).

Well yeh, you could always ask, you got a no, you can always get a yes :p. I showed that powweb to Andy, so I'm waiting for him to contact me back. I ordered him to show it to one of his friends who good with internet stuff, so if that friends says it's good, it's defiantly good XD. That powweb is really attractive. If you figure that we pay 6 dollar a month, for 400 mb of space and 10 gig's of bandwidth (no wonder our bandwidth blew out).

A hosting service I've worked with before that I approve of is 1and1.
1and1 Home pageTheir support staff is extremely good, and were there with me an entire night when I did something dumb that screwed it up. Prices are good, too, for the services offered :D

Wha-?

I pay $6.95 a month for 200 GB storage and 2,000 GB transfer with my host. I am astounded that someone could charge almost the same price for such a minuscule amount of space.
I'd like to contribute to this topic, but I don't know of anything those hosts or any free ones. I use
Bluehost, and it costs $6.95 a month, which is only $83.40 a year, but you have to pay for a minimum of 2 years to start. Which makes it $166.80 to start your site, and it sounds like you're looking to spend less than that right now. I do recommend them, though, if you can afford that. It's an amazing price for the amount of storage and bandwidth you get, plus they've got awesome uptime and support.

Eh, on
Mochahost I pay $5.95 for 100G space/10G transfer, but they do have a 50G plan for $3.71.
They do have an autoinstall of the same board IF uses, but I wouldn't recommend it. They seem to have made some changes with it that makes it rather buggy.

Want to switch? By far, the best I've seen is
http://www.lunarpages.com/Why? Because their support team is
great. Not only that but for reasonable monthly charge you get full access, you get lots of things included, from email to unlimited MySQL.
Link to the basic package
