Title: [S] Genre Ideas

Angel.Es - May 5, 2006 06:59 PM (GMT)
Hey all! Hope your all well! Basically I'm writing this post to see which of these genres you prefer and make a more sucessful RPG board. I am a big fan of RPG's and believe in active boards, so I was wondering, for my latest addition to the RPG world, which of these genres should I base my RPG on?

[>>] School RPG, Public School, Bording school etc
[++] Gangster RPg, Godfather 1920's based.
[^^] Harry Potter RPG, Later on after Harry Potter Books

Any Ideas?

And if you come up with an Idea, could you please post some advice about running one of these boards? Help will be greatly appreciated.

Harry Potter, done WAY to much for my taste. If it was a hybrid version like this site [link removed] then I would say go for it because it is totally original idea on the old Harry Potter look. But beyond that then no, I don't think you could get many people to join something that is always being done.

1920s theme, It would be interesting, however I would up the date to the 30's during the time when liquior was illegal, that was when Gansters like Capone were big timers. I have done a GF RP, not that fun in my opinion, just big street fights and smuggling from the coppers.

Well, again it would depend, is it to be a regualr school idea? Or is it more fantasy/original type? For example I was a member on an RP site where basicly it was school in the future with evil-type administaration, kinda fun in my mind.

Out of them all, I would have to say the Ganster-type RP because it is done the least of the three and can be more original then any of the others are.

I know Harry Potter roleplays are overdone, but they have the lovely aspect of your characters being able to do magic. Personally I'm a fan of them, but you need something to make members join your board, as opposed to the hundreds of others out there.

The problem with a high school RPG (for me) is that I'm in high school. Who wants to go to high school in your free time? Don't you get enough of it during the day? Unless of course, something was added to it to make it not your ordinary high school. Like with what Pard said, about the evil administration. That wouldn't happen in a regular (well, most regular) high schools, which would make it unique and fun. You could do something in the future maybe. Idea! Have you seen Xenon, that Disney channel movie? Well you could have a school on a space station or something, where kids go to Neptune or something on the weekensds. People would be interested in that since it probably wouldn't happen in their lifetimes.

The gangster thing would be interesting; I've never seen that before, and it would be fun with the flapper culture and stuff. I'm not familiar with the Godfather so I can't give you much feedback on this one.

Just a note, Pard is in face incorrect. Alcohol was illegal during the 1920's in America. That is when "speak easies" and the term "bootleggers" were coined.

If you plan on basisng this "gangster" forum in America, it would be quite helpful to make Alcohol illegal. Most mobs at that time were the biggest producers of illegal alcohol and owned the majority of the speakeasies.

I think high school/board school tends to last longer than most, and it reaches a wide variety of people, while HP only really gets to those who like the movie/book. From what I've seen, high school ones tends to get the most active members and a large amount of people quickly, which is a kind of turn-on for anyone stopping by the site to see a bunch of people active. But you probably won't stay happy with the board unless you pick *your* favorite genre, that you know you won't get bored of quickly.

I'm not one for human RPGs (They're hard to roleplay for me) But i'd have to go with boarding school.
