Title: Multiple Languages?
Description: Which do you speak?

Forever Obsessed - May 8, 2007 10:25 AM (GMT)
So which languages can you speak semi-fluently?

I can speak English very fluently and French well enough. That's it :]

RomanHk - May 8, 2007 10:43 AM (GMT)
English and Cantonese Chinese, though my Mandarin is getting much better.

Akemi - May 10, 2007 08:00 AM (GMT)
Mhm. English. Chinese (Cantonese, Fujianese, Mandarin), and... Japanese.

Very. Horrible. Japanese. I need more practice/training/whatever.

OnlyHappyWhenItRains - May 10, 2007 03:44 PM (GMT)
English. And then I've taken Spanish for four years total in high school and college. Which basically means I could talk my way out of a corner, ask where the restroom is, and bargain with a flea market person to lower the price of a sombrero.

Quite sad actually.

missmossxx - May 10, 2007 05:09 PM (GMT)
English, of course.
And a little bit of Spanish and Welsh.
I'm not totally fluent in either of the last two, but I can hold a conversation about certain subject quite easily, and often speak in wenglish in real life.

Lenore - May 10, 2007 05:47 PM (GMT)
I speak English (main language)
Lots of French when I can be bothered
German, but not much.
I can say a few things in Russian
and know how to ask where the toilet is in Arabic.
I also know phrases in Irish/Scottish/Welsh Gaelic, Latin and Greek.

I like knowing random stuff in other languages :p

Audrie Reed - May 12, 2007 08:09 PM (GMT)
Frisian? Wow, you really do learn something new everyday! I've never heard that before.

pretty as a [CAR] crash;;& - May 13, 2007 02:52 AM (GMT)
English
Spanish
Italian

English fluently, Spanish random words, Italian... Bad words. XD

paperCUTT - May 16, 2007 11:51 AM (GMT)
I speak English and French. English because .. well, that's my main language. And French, because we're kinda forced to learn it in school. x]

Roswenth - May 16, 2007 01:15 PM (GMT)
English, and moderate Japanese. I can understand Japanese a lot better than I can express myself in it. Don't read it hardly at all, though. I can read kana but not kanji.

I also read classical Greek pretty well, and Latin is rusty, but I can still figure out the gist.

Spanish and Portugese are pretty bad. We had a Brazilian housekeeper for three years, and I picked up a lot of Portugese then, but it's rusty now. I still can follow what's going on, though.

Akito - May 20, 2007 07:11 PM (GMT)
Varying degrees of English, Korean and Spanish.

English is my native language. I'm trying to improve my Korean to the point where I'm fluent, speaking, reading and writing. I've been studying Spanish for 5 years.

xollamasongox - May 25, 2007 08:50 PM (GMT)
I speak both English and Spanish. I was born learning English, and I started taking Spanish last year. I'm pretty good (I managed to get in Spanish Three Honnors next year) but I'm not the best XD.

Miss Khaos - May 25, 2007 11:58 PM (GMT)
English, and I'm learning French. :]

Ancient_Rainfall - May 25, 2007 11:59 PM (GMT)
I speak English and Russian. However, Russian is my first language. I can speak, write, and read Russian fluently. But, the same applies to the English language. -Shrugs- I guess that's because I want to be an English novelist when I grow up.

Rokkan - May 26, 2007 01:10 PM (GMT)
English fluently, German semi-fluently, French semi-fluently with a slight German accent. I learned German before I learned French. I also know basic Serbian.

Keira Blacktalon - June 19, 2007 01:51 AM (GMT)
English and Al Bhed! LOL! XD

Does that even count? lol

Someone famous - June 23, 2007 09:19 PM (GMT)
I speak english, swedish, norweigan and french (blush)

;;loaded[g u n] - June 23, 2007 10:14 PM (GMT)
I speak english, Irish, and Pig Latin?
LOL! does that count as a language?

thingymabob - July 5, 2007 07:08 AM (GMT)
Me...? English and Chinese!

Temperance - July 5, 2007 02:12 PM (GMT)
I speak Finnish, English, Swedish, French, Spanish and German :p

French and Spanish I studied only for a while but I know the basics....German I studied for two years long ago and can't remember much anymore.

Finnish is my native language, English and Swedish I still study. (I hate the fact that swedish is compulsory like English!!!!)

Varashmi - July 5, 2007 02:34 PM (GMT)
I speak (+read/write) English and Swedish fluently, and Norwegian is pretty much the same, so I can speak that too, but not Danish, although I can read/understand that.

I did 9 years of French on and off, so I can read that pretty wel, but my speaking/writing is ..choppy.

I can say the odd thing in Dutch, German, Fanti, Malay, Russian and Chinese, but it's all very random. xP

@Temperance - I think it's really stupid that you guys have to learn Swedish in schools; you really don't need it, especially if you live miles away from the north border. What's the point, right?

'Quel - July 10, 2007 02:30 AM (GMT)
Well, I only chose the ones I can speak reasonably; Dutch, English and German.

Dutch, because... well, if I wouldn't be able to speak Dutch, something's wrong with me.

English, because I rule. Well, no, not really XD I just used to watch loads and loads of BBC when I was around nine.

German, because it looks a lot like Dutch, so I only have to think logically and know what it means.

I know the odd words in French, Spanish and Russian aaaand... that's where it stops. ^^

kimmeth - July 14, 2007 06:53 PM (GMT)
English, of course. =D

A little French since I took it last year but I quit.

AND Filipino. I can understand it all but when I speak it, I tend to have an accent. -_-

butterfly_kisses325 - July 24, 2007 08:10 AM (GMT)
English

and Tagalog. (The Filipino language)
It's really my native language, but sadly, I somehow became semi-fluent to it. I understand the language, and I could read it. But I can't talk the language in a complete conversation.

And I'll be learning French soon.

Err. . .I speak english much more fluently than I speak my native language, filipino(tagalog), which is probably really sad. With both languages I can understand, read, write, and hold a conversation.

As for otthers. . .I can sort of understand spanish, a tad of japanese, some korean, a little chinese. . .and very little french.

Oh, &here, where I live, everyone understands and speaks pidgin. - -;

Mousie - July 24, 2007 10:17 AM (GMT)
Aiee... people are so good with languages.. I speak English.

Specifically:
Australian-English, though it's not all that different to proper English. I have to explain myself lots though. There are a lot of phrases that are common here that no one else seems to use *shrug*.

Very bad Italian. And that's no exaggeration - I did some Italian in primary school, and a little in my first year of highschool. Pretty much after that it was music, so all I can really do is conduct an orchestra in the usual musical terms.. which happen to be Italian. XD

And Auslan - Australian Sign Language. I had a friend who was deaf, and while I don't know too many signs, I know the alphabet, so I was able to communicate with her well enough.

Hehe, and I also know how to tell someone to uff off in Arabic. My brother taught me. :D

Kaida - July 28, 2007 03:20 AM (GMT)
I speak English fluently as a native language

I also took 5 years of Spanish in high school, but forget a lot of that

Now I'm taking Japanese in college, and am doing pretty well with that. I'm gonna minor in it, and hopefully become fluent one day ^^;;

Brandon - August 4, 2007 04:42 AM (GMT)
English is my first. I attended French Immersion up until grade 5, so I'm fairly good, though not fluent. I am continuing with it, though.

Steph - August 4, 2007 07:04 AM (GMT)
I speak English quite fluetly. Something my sister has yet to master.

I speak a bunch of Latin and a bit of French.

I've been taking Spanish since I was 5.

J-Ster™ - August 5, 2007 03:05 AM (GMT)

Secret Silenced - August 30, 2007 11:32 PM (GMT)
I speak Fluent English (it's my home language), Mostly fluent Spanish (I plan to study it in college), enough French to pass by in France (dunno why I took it x3).

Aaaand I've picked up some Japanese over the years. Like...enough to find the bathroom and get help if I'm dying x3

Devin-San - September 22, 2007 04:48 PM (GMT)
ENGLIsh
Japanese
German

SiriusLives222 - October 26, 2007 05:34 PM (GMT)
American English is my first language... I've lived in Massachusetts all my life, so this is what I talk in almost all the time. No real explanation... I live here. I speak it.

I'm relatively fluent at British English. I've been training at it for quite some time now, and I know some slang, and MOST of the changed spellings. I've recently changed my spell checker to British to help me get better at it, and I practise a lot. I'm really bad at the accent in my opinion... I've never gotten the courage to ask a real Brit how good I am at the accent... even though 1/4 of my closest friends lives is British and lives in England. I think I'm fluent at writing and reading British English. I read an entire book that was full of slang, the version from England. I actually know a little cockney too... which I'm proud of.

I've taken a year and a bit of Spanish... with a really weird teacher, who teachers us way too much inappropriate things. I can ask to undress someone, using several complex sexual words. However, I can't buy a taco... or ask where the hotel is. I can also tell you that I can't go to your party because I need to go to England with my friends. Yeah, I know it's so useful. However, I love the class... the teacher is hilarious.

As for the not exactly real languages, I'm okay at Pig Latin... though not great. I can hold my own with both Legalese (what lawyers speak) and medical language. It takes a little while for me to translate the pig Latin... it's a completely useless language, because everyone knows it, it just makes it harder to talk.

I can use complex medical words in casual conversation... or not so casual conversation. I know exactly what a cerebral infarction is, and I can say defibrillator amazingly fast. Yeah... so I only know that because I watch House MD obsessively.

Legalese is pretty easy. All you need to do is state everything at least eight different ways using as large words as you can. "I would appreciate it if you could please tell me the location of where the bathroom on the premises of this shopping centre is located, if there is in fact a rest room on your location." Yes, that sentence also had a little British in it. In normal English, that translates to "Where's the bathroom? or "Is there a bathroom in this store?" I have no clue how I learned that... but it's fun sometimes.

LittleBookworm - October 27, 2007 03:33 PM (GMT)
Hungarian was my first language, even though I'm from Romania. Then, I started speaking Romanian, followed closely by German (since I'm attending a German school). I speak English (a combination between British and American (smile) ) fluentely. I also speak Spanish and a little French (even though I'm bad at it).

Sophles - October 27, 2007 03:58 PM (GMT)
I speak Dutch, duh, I live in the Netherlands. I also speak/understand German [only basic things] and some French. Oh, and English of course, I've pretty much learned myself how to write and speak English.

{little} miss UNIQUE. - October 28, 2007 01:14 PM (GMT)
I fluently speak English, German, Croatian and Slovene.

I also know some basic conversations and sentences in Japanese and Spanish. ^^

Emuerz - October 29, 2007 12:52 AM (GMT)
I speak English fluently since it's my mother-tongue And since I'm dumb I clicked French without realising there was a 'Canadian-French' option. Which I guess is what I would speak nearly fluently. I live in Canada and therefore learnt my French here... but I've watched movies from France and understood perfectly, seen interviews from France, understood perfectly, and spoken to people from France and understood perfectly. I know there's a difference in the slang and some of the expressions, but otherwise I don't find much of a difference.

I'm also learning German and speak it fairly well for only two months of instruction but am by no means close to fluency. =P

Starbucks Barista - November 2, 2007 01:55 AM (GMT)
I speak enough Italian to carry on a miniature conversation with an Italian. It's my second language, so it takes more time to really learn thoroughly and everything. But it's fun. I have a bunch of relatives scattered all over Italy and Sicily (250+ and still counting) so my incentive is to keep studying it so I can actually talk to my relatives over there, even if it is just by phone. x.X

My first language is English. Now THAT I am really fluent in. Especially when it comes to grammar. (tongue)

.cooper - November 18, 2007 06:39 PM (GMT)
I can speak English, obviously, and I know a little bit of German, both writing and speaking, and I can speak a little Japanese.
