Title: Sci Fi Idea
Roswenth - April 30, 2007 06:16 PM (GMT)
Some of my other friends are considering starting an RP and thought I would have some ideas, so how does this sound?
A space station, mainly a tourist destination, which has various areas with different themes...like Japan/Geisha, Matahari, fantasy-medieval, etc. Members can either/both play workers or guests (could be repeat or just live there permanently). So there would be entertainment/roleplay in different settings, but also a hotelish setting. Of course, there would be conflict over that station or area of space between several systems, and interstellar politics and space fighting would also come into play.

Owh, that sounds pretty neat *big grin*. I'd really like such a roleplay I think. I especially like that it's set onto a spacestation *reminds me to DS9*.
For me, it might work I think. And defiantly when you do it with a bunch of friends.

I had one reply that said she really thought it was really interesting, but I didn't want to flesh it out to much and take them out of that process. And there definately would have to be some things worked out more, but we'll see what the others say. I was also thinking just open rooms, sorta like the Star Trek holorooms, where people could just make up the plot.

That would be really cool. You could take quite some things from series like Star Trek, and maybe other sci-fi related things and mold it into the RPG. Maybe you could even make a space station that is in orbid somewhere in our system, maybe around earth, the moon, mars, or another planet. Where people from earth now live too. That idea reminds me a bit of the sort of colonies from Gundam Wing.

I like it, but they seem to be into another girl's future punk idea more (which hasn't really been developed). It's mostly theirs, so it's really up to them.

I kind of like the idea. If you had this Station orbiting a planet it could be more than just a tourist destination. You could also set up an immigration/customs control point for the planet so that the station has too purposes. Allowing members to have a wide number of choices. They could rp as guests or businessmen on the station as you suggested but also allow them to play as security for the planet in an attempt to stop the trafficking of illegal aliens and goods onto the planet or vice versa they could be the ones trying to make a living by trafficking the illegals.
Just a thought. But I like the idea it reminds me of a computer game I used to play called Startopia

Well, it looks like the other girl isn't going to participate, and I don't want to use an idea of someone who's not involved, so we're back to the sci fi idea. And ShinLi posted a very persuasive post there, and swayed one of the others.
Sorry, it is kinda long, but it's hard to summarize more than we have. Here are our three top choices:

| QUOTE | Dark Fey: The Legend is a massive urban fantasy MMORPG set in a Tokyo-like future. Switch in and immerse yourself in a dark underworld where nothing is as it seems!
There are many types of people in this underworld:
-beautiful faeries who can cast illusions -flying angel-like humans with the power to bless and curse -vampires with super reflexes and superior fighting ability -animal-people with attributes like the animals they are like -cyborgish humans with the ability to hack and manipulate the city computer system
Character generation is quick and easy! Come see what Headgamers Weekzine calls "Massively good fun!"

OK, this is not only an RPG, it's going to be a true challenge to your roleplaying and creative writing abilities. 1. In this game you will be playing yourself playing a character in an online computer game world. Everyone in the group knows who each IRL person is, and will respond to you as yourself. So, basically it is you as you are today, playing a game with the technology about 20-30 years advanced. NPCs will only see you as your character, and there are serious in-game consequences for being out-of-character around NPCs. Yes, an RP of characters playing characters. 2. Genetics (the races above) were created as military test subjects. The genetics are able to pass the modified genes, and characters at this time are descendants of original genetics. They are disliked by 'normal' people because of their abilities, but there is a political movement to normalize them. It just doesn't seem to work. Most genetics have legal rights, but not acceptance, and so live in an underworldish setting. 3. "The Rolemaster" is the computer guide, and "he" will be directing the game. He will send you clues via your in-game datapads which will lead you on your adventure. He will also tell you if your efforts have been successful and sometimes send you necessary tools and resources. In some ways, the Rolemaster acts as "Fate", changing the course of the game and your involvement in it. 4. We will be pretending that our technology is advanced about 20 or 30 years and are now using virtual reality for the internet. The internet is now a device you wear on your ear. When you "switch on" it broadcasts the signal right to your brain, and you are immersed in a virtual internet, just like you were there. You have your own desktop which is like our desktop, and it can be customized any way you like (if you've read the teen NetForce series, yes). The Matrix is another example of this idea.

| I came up with this silly idea once, a sort-of post-apocalyptic X-men/Appleseed society with the beautiful society full of affluence, in which people can only use money by means of a microchip implanted in the back of the hand, a kind of combination ID/cashcard. Anyone who hasn't got it basically does not 'exist' according to the society and has to try to eke out a living on the outskirts or in the slums, if they can avoid the authorities, who would jail them unless they sign or subject them to euthanasia. People not allowed in include handicapped, mutants (the X-men part), and anyone whose religious beliefs prevent them from signing the statement allowing the secular-humanist culture to take priority over their faith/god/God. Generally a player character would be one of these outcasts. |

What about a sci fi RP based off a space station or station/planet, but with kind of a Japanese feel, like with tea rooms and geisha entertainers. And maybe other sections with different country or theme influences. It would still have the space/combat side. Could involve all the others in different ways if it was done right.
It does have the advantage of going in so many directions and allowing for both personal drama as well as space opera. Different races with different skills/appearances would give more flavor. Should we base them on cultures we know about, or have humans from those earth cultures, and then different cultures for aliens? The first might be a little easier to understand/manage.
I was also thinking that the computer could act as the information portal, and that maybe rules and other things could be all IC. Another weird idea is for the whole site to be IC. I really don't know if that would work, but it would be different. But it would be possible to have a 'message board' and/or chat channels where characters post and argue to each other as their characters, not as OOC players. There could also be comms devices and though I'm not sure how to do it - every character/family having their own living space. |

Owh, you added a bit on the space station idea. I like those ideas. And for different cultures for aliens you could always have a sneaky eye towards Star Trek. I think they did a really good job on some cultures there. You could base some alien races on them, and their culture, and give your own twist to it.
I think all those three ideas are amazing, but again I'm goign for idea number one or three. Three would be amazing because I've been searching for a good space RPG for ages, and all the Star Trek RPG's seem to have died (found like 20 yesterday, all were dead or inactive). I think I would defiantly join either of them if they were created *nods*.

I'm really not sure the girl who came up with the second idea is going to participate, so I don't want to use her idea if she's not.
