Title: Guys And Girls
Matches - April 30, 2007 01:06 AM (GMT)
Okay, is it just me, or has anyone else ever noticed that there seems to be a huge girls:guys ratio, like on a 20:1 basis. I'm not talking about the characters, though I will in a sec, but I mean the actual people roleplaying. I hardly ever run into male rpers, especially not in certain genres. The only places I've ever found guy rpers are on huge X-Men rpgs, or perhaps huge Harry Potter rpgs.
Also, with so many girls rping, they always seem to choose male characters to play, right? So we have more female rpers but more male charries. It seems to follow me around everywhere I go, but like I said, it might just be crazy talk, but I'd be interested in what you have to say.

hmm interesting. The ones I go to always have more female characters than male which is the reason why I play males 90 percent of the time. I usually find guy rpers in fantasy or sci fi forums not in anything else.....that I know of that is...

Wherever I go I feel over-ruled by females. A lot of the time I wonder if there's actually any male roleplayers other than myself left. o.O

Yeah, on a site of 20, there's one girl...and its typically always like that, unless the board has a member count in the thousands, at which point its balanced or 60/40 in the male/girl ratio.

I'm a bloke and I love to roleplay anything. I have the same problem when branching out from my familiar territory (as mentioned before fantasy/sci-fi). So if any guys feel like rping in a genre outside of those two genres and feels outnumbered by the girls, feel free to give me a shout.

I know quite a few males RP'ers but it is like you siad Matches, mostly X-Men and HP. I have also been on a deamon based, and Pirates based, and a few gang based ones that have a lot of guys.
But I also know that a lot of girls end up playing guys characters.
I myself have had almost 7-8 male characters, and only 5 females. I am a female myself. i think the reason that I play more male characters is that i am really tomboy and like to play cannons. Most cannon females seem to have prep/slut/abused back grounds while the guys are all realy cool.

I guess people tend to roleplay characters they themselves want to be. Since it's mostly girls that RP, then I suppose it's only natural that they want to RP girls. Still, I tend to like those who do both guys and girls more - a little diversity never hurt.
I think that holds true for Mary-Sues too. Deep down inside, we all want to be perfect. At least I know it'd be nice not to make a mistake once in a while.

We were saying that girls rp guys more often than not because they outnumber blokes by about twenty to one in genres falling outside the fantasy/sci-fi field. I agree that roleplaying with people who rp both guys and girls is ideal.
But I disagree that deep down inside we all want to be perfect and that it's reflected in our writing. I prefere to give my characters flaws and properties that make them struggle from situation to situation. Cos thats basically my view on life and I wouldn't trade it for anyhing.
Perfection is something thats overrated in my opinion because its the fact that we arent perfect that defines us as individuals.

I've found the ratio depends on what genre you're playing.
High School RP? Def. gonna find more girls. Guys just...don't seem interested in that stuff. Most of them anyways.
X-Men RP? Almost even. On all the X-Men RPG's I've been on, I think the ratio of boys to girls is just about even. Why? Well, I think boys read more comics. (Although I have yet to meet a boy in my hometown with my loveth of Uncanny X-Men =[ I have to look harder...or spend more time at the comic book store)
Its been said before, but really, that's only because it's true. Sci-fi/Fantasy is gonna get more boys than High School 'drama' RPs.

I agree. I just can't see myself Rping some sort of animal among other things. There's just no appeal there for me, though I'm not dissing it for anyone who does do it.

I dunno, I'm a guy and I can't stand playing High School Rps, but I play both genders. I think it has a lot more to do with the plot of a site, and less to do with the genre. When I decide which gender to play, I look at the plot and see what would fit better with it, a guy or a girl.

I own a multi-genre role-playing site with about 600 members, and I know about 20 guys there. So yes, there is a big difference. Also, I've noticed that most males at least on my site tend to play male slash the most often. It's very interesting, to see all of the different statistics on the site. c:

I am ABSOLUTELY stunned to find so many males here! i've never seen a male on an RPG! Kudo's to you all! What kind of ganres do you men RP in? My friend and I have a maffia type RPG that's VERY violent and we've been looking for guys to rp with, didn't think there were any out there. is this the kind of theme you guys would be interested in?
MSE Admin - May 5, 2007 06:42 PM (GMT)
I roleplay mostly on High School Roleplays, and when I come across the girl:guy ratio, it's usually more girls than guys, because, well...girls are more avid rpers than guys. When girls do register as guys, they tend to make them gay sometimes, which is a disadvantage for the girl characters on the board. I mean, that phase has kinda died out. Only really big high school rpgs have so many characters that guys start turning homosexual. I'm not prejudice or anything, I just prefer to roleplay with guy characters who are actually being rped by a real guy. It's a weird habit, I know...I just can't do the roleplay with a girl thing x]
anneliesepl - May 5, 2007 09:26 PM (GMT)
i've noticed that. i RP on HP and high school boards and i have/had a few HP boards and seen that girls definitely wipe out the boys in population. i'm a female but i have this thing about playing boy characters, it's different. i personally don't like playing a girl since i am one. confusing really.
SCRT - May 5, 2007 09:33 PM (GMT)
I much prefer playing guy characters and I am female, but some friends of mine I play girls to their guys better... I think it's interesting how many of you say you're girls and rather play guys when every RPg I've been on is girls only playing girls, the girl charries and player overpower the men. (Not saying you're lying lol, just haven't seen you all around the sites i play on)
anneliesepl - May 5, 2007 09:36 PM (GMT)
I’ve seen sites that go both ways. Girls play girls and guys play guys. But usually the sites I actually join have a higher boy: girl character ratio. That’s all.
xmorbidxxdreamsx - May 6, 2007 09:22 PM (GMT)
The majority of the sites I have ever roleplayed on or even stopped and looked over for a while, always had a girl > boy ratio. I've roleplayed with guys before, but usually the majority of the guys I've seen on RPG's only roleplay guys, whereas, the majority of girls, roleplay girl characters…I, myself, play the majority of guy characters, and I do it because I've noticed that girls create girl characters because they want to roleplay out love and all that fancy stuff that comes with it.
I'm not saying this is for everyone, but I've seen it with the majority of people. I've even had friends tell me they always have to have a significant other for their character. –shrugs-

Personally for me, as a girl, I play more girls because i can identify with them easier. Guys are just...foreign to me. The first time I ever played a guy was Iceman on a X-Man site and that was because I was a mod and they needed someone to finish out an important battle thread with him as an NPC because is player just up and left on us (A whol 'nother tirade... (angry) ). Anyway, he was also in a serious relationship with Jean Grey and I found that I loved playing the sweet, in love Bobby Drake.
However, since leaving that site (oh why oh why did I ever do that?) I have played mainly female charries because I'll never reach that same thing that I had with my first Bobby. My first male character after that was a college character and while he was very interesting...it was just weird. I didn't get enough time playing him to really feel him out. Now I'm back to playing Bobby on a different site.
I have noticed though, that in every other RPG save X-Men, most characters and players tend to be a little biased towards the femanine persuassion, and that may simply be because girl's have more drama. They talk behind each others backs, and hate each other when they aren't in the same room. But guys...they fight and get over it.

most of the sites i've been on have more girl characters and girl players than male. that said, it can swap the other way around. i prefer to play girls, mainly i think because of the visuals...i like to use models and its very difficult (for me at least) to find edgy, avant-garde male models. i hate using celebrities so there is a shortage. its a weird reason, i know, but there you have it.
EmbraceDeath - May 7, 2007 11:29 AM (GMT)
I have never thought of that, on most of the roleplaying forums I am at, I don't know the gender of the others. I am mostly around fantasy-rp's (like mine own) and stuff close to that. And, to be honest, I enjoy having female characters most of the time, but sometimes I stick with mine own gender. On my forum, I even play as both male and female. :D (Due to lack of members, I have allowed people to have two characters).

I go to a nice RP board where there really was a pretty nice amount of guys....but then suddenly they just kinda started to disappear.....became inactive (GOD I HATE WHEN THEY JUST DISAPPEAR)...I think there might be a slight RP depression going on...at least on the boards I go to....and my board is so suffering from it too. Or maybe I just dont advertise enoguh...lol...anyways...many guys just seem to get kicked off just cos of inactivity.

Until recently, I'd only ever played in the Delphiforums RPG circuit and one or two self-contained, private boards, where the male-female ratio tended to shift in either direction as time went on, but if anything I most commonly played around more guys than girls. Though I've been running my games on Invision for a while now, I only recently ventured out into the wider community when I joined this site, and man was it a big shock for me to see so many female roleplayers!
One big difference definitely stands out to me as a probable factor: age. Most Invision/Proboard players that I've seen around are in their teens, which was another surprise to me since the Delphi RPG community had an unfortunate tendency to look down on younger players and it was rare for teenagers to come by, and even rarer for them to stick around for long. I was one of those rare few myself, years ago ;)
On Delphi and the other boards I played at, on the other hand, older (20's, 30's, even 40's) players were very common, and they were usually people who carried over their experiences with the old pen and paper RPGs, like "Dungeons & Dragons" from the 70's and 80's. Girls by and large didn't really play pen and paper until pretty recently, so there were far fewer in this crowd. It's also no accident that in a community full of older, "traditional" RPG players, most of the games were medieval fantasy, superhero, and a few science fiction forums. I remember about 3 Harry Potter games springing up (but never active at the same time), and exactly ZERO high school, college, etc. games. Someone made a go of a real-life game about a small fictional city in the United States, but it wasn't long before supernatural elements crept in.
To answer SCRT's question: I play mainly in fantasy, superhero, and sci-fi games. I also like games based on TV shows, movies, or video games depending on which ones - but most often I land in whatever-based games that fall into those three categories above. I like steampunk and historical RPs too, if I'm interested in the subject being addressed (I once had the opportunity to play a kindly British soldier in Boston during the final years before the American Revolution, that was a lot of fun). I'll admit it, I fall into one of those usual "guy" stereotypes ;) - I like some conflict in my games, and genres like high school and normal everyday real-life were never something I could fit myself into.
