Title: The Most Annoying Thing A Person Can Do In An Rp
Madman Mike - April 21, 2007 09:04 PM (GMT)
Let's say that you've written an awesome post which is full of action/suspense/drama/bunnies etc. and it has mentally drained you of everything. You can't wait for the person to reply and start off a wicked RP.
And then someone does reply... with about 10 words.
The last time that happened to me, I just gave up on the RP and left it hanging. To me, it's the most annoying thing that can ever happen in an RP but I'm sure you guys/gals can think of worse right?
So then, what's the most annoying thing you think can happen in an RP?
Ren - April 21, 2007 10:07 PM (GMT)
There's someone I've RPed with for about three years, who has this problem where all of her posts, her plots etc. are so centered around her character, that there's nearly no focus on the other characters at all.
She also has a way of subtley bashing characters and trying to persuade people to have their character do things... well, uncharacteristic of them to suit her needs.
=O It's hard to explain. You'd need to be there.
thereisnochoice - April 21, 2007 10:16 PM (GMT)
haha thats amusing, i was just talking about that in another thread.. its so gutting cause you cant exactly delete it.. i hate slack admins who let in these kinds of people
heavenne - April 21, 2007 10:24 PM (GMT)
that's understandable if someone replies with a one liner...it would be nice if they told you they had writer's block. I would let them get away with it once...if they do it constantly though that's just laziness on their part.
What bothers the flying @#$3 out of me is when people join the rp but don't read the previous posts to get the background or the feel of the story plot. Like they don't know who's who and don't care. WTF is up with that?
thereisnochoice - April 21, 2007 11:29 PM (GMT)
yeah, i think its all down to laziness on peoples' parts but i do reckon its common curteousy
darkmagic - April 23, 2007 03:29 AM (GMT)
I can probably make a list of like 50 things that gets on my nerves when RPing lol The main thing is like what Mike said. I made this good sized post, say about 2 or 3 good sized paragraphs. I get a post that is two lines long. Lazy bum didn't put any effort into it! So I replied with another long post. I get five lines. Finally I said forget it and forget the post.
Another thing is when characters over react. Like once my dog was lead into a den by the alpha, the other wolf suddenly wanted to kill her, she put "I'm going to tear the wolf into pieces!". Then finally when the wolf was about to attack she starts crying then runs away. And I know it's not the character because all the member's characters are like that.
Another thing is when I somehow get stuck RPing with myself. Like once my foal was adopted by a mare that was in my stallion's herd. The mare left to go do something and I was left to RP with myself for about two days or something. (I just had my characters stand there really and not really talk to each other)
Oh and another one is when members make their characters hate your's when they don't like you. My characters just get ticked at other characters when the characters do something wrong.
I know I have more lol I'll stop my ranting though lol
skippymoo - April 23, 2007 07:25 AM (GMT)
I get intimidated by really gigantic posts. You know, the ones that go for AGES. Heck, its because I want to make a post just as long, but I flippin well can't because I'm not into with putting in meaningless detail... I'll get distracted by something far more interesting, then go inactive and stuff. Lol, purple prosing sucks.
Short posts are lame too. I used to do them when I first started role-playing - well, everyone did them. When I went back to that ol' site, I was thinking that I made some mighty fine posts, but one look and I was like "zomg, did I actually post one line?"
I think someone gave me short reply once... Think I tried to keep the topic going but eventually gave up.
And the big finale, is when you can't read a post because the person is terrible at grammar. Hmmm. Noooo. (suprised)
Angel-girl - April 23, 2007 11:33 AM (GMT)
I don't mind short posts and long ones. . .well, they're ok, as long as they're well-written and thought out, but I hate threads where all participants think they have to write for days to "keep up," but what I really hate is when group threads where one RPer thinks that they need to reply so that their character doesn't get "left behind," whether they have anything to say or not. And I especially hate it, when said RPer does something (for no reason) which stops the thread, especially when they get up and leave after stopping the thread.
And I also hate it when RPers throw their characters into threads where they have nothing to contribute just 'cause they're bored and their other characters are in threads.
Jay Serge - April 23, 2007 06:41 PM (GMT)
OO OO OO I got on, went I had this one dude on one of my sites who didn't understand like the limits of the human body like when ever he wanted to get into a fight he would go like mega over the top, like jump clean over my character and kick him in the back of the hide, though my character is like 6 foot tall, how high can that person jump or what??? lol Yeah that’s what I thinks the most annoying thing a person can do in ap is like go way over bored an put you in a really back place where you have to try and match them to make it fair though you know it's totally over the top.
MichelleGentry - April 24, 2007 01:24 AM (GMT)
One thing I hate is when EVERYTHING is in character. I mean everything, the c-box, game forums, PMs. I was trying to tell someone to stop God-moding with my character and they kept replying with some evasive 'I know not of what you speak' answers. Needless to say, I left. If you can't get through to other users, problems are bound to come up.
Panda - April 24, 2007 02:18 AM (GMT)
Oh, hands down, someone absolutely, positively avoiding any kind of significant harm beyond the odd scrape in a fight - worse still, someone who has picked up fighting skills out of thin air and is able to dodge someone who, realistically, should be able to flay them alive.
Take. A. Hit!
Another thing that irritates me is when you go over ideas for an important plot, think you have everything sorted, then that person turns around while you're in the middle of the thread and decide to take it in a completely different direction. It makes things messy and awkward when it would be much more convenient to discuss this unexpected plot swerve in the original discussions!
DemonDiaries - April 24, 2007 02:26 AM (GMT)
I think it's most annoying when they have broken sentences, horrible spelling (i do make mistakes, but I do try) and no grammer.
naturally talented admin - May 1, 2007 01:46 AM (GMT)
I really hate when you are RPing in a group and and you write a nice long post, and than the other people in the thread, just to match you, repeat everything in the post before them and add like two lines.
does anyone know what I mean?
John Delorean - May 2, 2007 06:06 PM (GMT)
When you're RPing in a group, and the other person just drop's off the radar, leaving you stuck in time...

Oh eck. I totally know! I also hate it when people write like a one liner but then quote all of your character's speech so their post looks longer, but isn't... gaah.
dressagerider - May 2, 2007 10:28 PM (GMT)
I positively cannot stand it when you're RP-ing with someone and they go inactive. Whenever I'm going away, I always let the person know that I'll be gone and when I'll be back so they know not to expect a post from me soon. This happened to me recently, and the character happens to be a major part of the plot. *roar*
Elmo.Knows.All - May 3, 2007 11:02 AM (GMT)
The one thing that irks me more than anything is when another person thinks their character can read others' minds. For example, I was rp-ing with a guy when and in my narrative I put that annoying teenagers tended to annoy my character to death. The other character responded 'I know annoying teenagers tend to annoy you to death.'
Another thing that really irks me is when a character nags you about responding to a thread. For instance, a person I rp-ed with posted a response and then pm'ed me five minutes (literally) later asking me why I hadn't posted back yet.
Meikun - May 6, 2007 11:40 PM (GMT)
Oh lord, the reading minds bit is painful! Because of course their character knows all about yours and is an expert at reading emotions, facial expressions, body language....
Yeah, I actually find it more annoying when a person is...well, annoying about posting when they think it's timely. We all have lives! And I am a slow writer; I can spend an hour and a half on one post that only ends up being a little over a page, so I get really irked when people are vehement about activity. It's nice when people post every day or multiple times a day, but I like being as laid back as possible about how often people post... Abandoning things, however, isn't so nice...but again...life, people...it kinda gets in the way.....

I know EXACTLY what you mean! I know a girl who does this, preassures you into makeing your character do something they never would. Like a strong willed girl is dating a guy for a year and he out of nowhere viciously beats and rapes her, then the girl is terrified of him, obviously doens't want anything to do with him and she gets mad at ME because: "oh no! now they're breaking up??? " its like, um.. yeah, what did you think they would do? Hello??? She also used the word "SMIRK" for EVERYTHING! Someone could be murdering someone and smirk, or in the sadest moment of their life and smirk, i dont' think she knows what it means lol

We have a member who is very sensitive as a person and she'll ask for threads and then we start them, and maybe a page or two in, she'll totally abandon them, then get all upset about why "No one is playing with her." And if you point out that you were playing with her, that you're waiting for replies in 3-4 threads, she ignores you. It's a whole lot of fun ;)
theblackgoddess - May 6, 2007 11:56 PM (GMT)
I hate it when one person isn't adding anything to the plot and even after you pm them numerous times it just seems like you're carrying them along for no good reason. Like you're doing all the work or something. It's hard to explain, but I hate it. And I hate when characters have such powerful magickal powers that like absolutely nothing phases them. At all. You throw a punch and they make you fall down a black hole before you hit them. It gets irritating. And I hate when a person says something that your character might want to respond to, but then says something else like that right after in the same post so that your character doesn't get a chance to respond to the first thing. Just a bunch of little things.
RomanHk - May 7, 2007 01:10 AM (GMT)
I hate when you get a long giant post from the other player detailing their mental reaction to everything and then only one line of dialog. How am I supposed to respond to that? I don't know what you're thinking if you don't tell me.
Carey Moffett - May 7, 2007 10:02 AM (GMT)
i agree with roman.
there was a guy at an old site i played at that i was in about three threads with. i would put a fair amount of effort into my post and then he would post back. id glance at it and it would look ok, but when you look at it closely its all 'his character' and their thinking and past and feelings and absolutely NOTHING about my character! so id post again, desperately eking out what i could from what little i had, and then he did it again! and again! finally i just ignored him. that is far worse than one-liners to me, because they do put effort into a post, but they dont care about you at all.
gah!

Jeez oh I so have that problem...then it also seems like she didn't even bother to read my post complitely! she just made my character stay in the scene even though I had written her to leave!
Lothlómendil - May 7, 2007 02:18 PM (GMT)
It always gets me when the people you're posting with don't pay attention to the details of what is going on, so they end up writing stuff that doesn't make sense. For example, you write that you had 5 enemies in a battle, and that one is killed, another is badly wounded. Then the next poster writes that all 5 are after him, not having paid attention to the 2 that wouldn't be able to attack.
Temperance - May 7, 2007 03:21 PM (GMT)
yeah...people should pay attention to the details...especially to something that actually that big as what the enemies do in the battle!
