I understand this isn't very helpful, but I consider it good advice!
If I were you I'd stay away from brushes - using other people's resources is cheap, talentless and doesn't give you any real sense of accomplishment.
I started out using PS brushes I found on www.deviantart.com - but soon gave them up in favour of filters, patterns, textures and Photoshop basics. I encourage to explore these options and make your own, original work. I'm a self taught designer, and it worked for me :)
If not, feel free to browse DA for some good brushes that match your tastes.

I think people put their brushes out there, especially in downloadable packages, for other artists to use. As long as you credit the original maker of the brush, you're golden. Plus, if you're like me and don't have any real talent with making brushes (tried many times and failed miserably), others providing their brushes can be a great resource. Why don't you try GENDER, RC&R, some livejournal communities feature tremendously lovely brushes (just search for brushes and see what communities/journals you come up with) and these might lead you other places. Now, if they say they're just putting the brushes out there as a sort of gallery thing, then don't use/take them. But again, if the artist puts them out there specifically for others to use them, why not?

I agree with the above. Brushes take alot more effor then premade things atleast, like C4d's, or using other's pics completely. Least this way, you have freedom without the difficulty of creating something 100% from scratch. :) Besides, using others is alot more fun, cause you can explore100's without the 100's of hours required to create them, and i personally always find it fun finding new awesome brushes :) Deviantart rox !!!! Or google it <3

I get all or most of my brushes from Deviantart.com. I adore that place. I also get my textures and patterns there.
just search photoshop brushes.
Also you can do the same search on google and find awesome ones that way also.
