Title: HP - Favourite Time Setting?

Lenore - March 21, 2007 02:34 PM (GMT)
I created a poll because I am currently working on a HP board. Though, I want to do research before I create it. I'm not into Marauders, I just like to give HP a twist so it makes things more interesting.

I myself, love the idea of 1940's time setting, when both the magical and Muggle world were at war, and maybe 1960's era.

I'd personally probably be most prone to go with present day, but 1940s is also interesting to me. I really don't see what you could do with 1960s, though, other than the wizarding world wondering what in the heck is going on with the Muggle one's young generation. Present day, now that I think of it, might be a little too trite. I'd change my vote to the 40s if I could now, actually...

1940's-1950's.

I've always wanted to do a Riddle Rising to Power era since it hasn't been done before to my knowledge and with all the subplots going around (murders, etc) it just seems like a good idea. Unfortunately, I don't know if anyone is interested.

Marauder's Era is blah. Present is blah. 1960's is good :) So is the 1980's.

 yeah, can imagine what the professors would say to half-blood/Muggleborn hippy kids. I thought o 60's because it was an era of free-love and peace & such. So...thought about what would happen if some Muggles were to find out about magic and their reactions.

Indeed! If I were to make 1940's HP, it would probably be 1944, maybe earlier. But in 1944 Voldemort was 18, so he was just going into his sociopath stage. Muggle war officially ended in 1945 so it would give room for subplots yes.

1980's. I love 80's clothes, music and films XD James and Lily were killed in 1981and many of the adults Canons are around. Though I \m not a huge fan of Canon, it would leave room for plotting.

So now, I think maybe its between 40's and 80's for me.

thank you for your input =)

summerdanez - March 21, 2007 04:58 PM (GMT)
Well if you did a 40's rpg, againist my better rational judgement of time management, I would so join <3

Maybe an eighties just because the eighties did rock. The three years that I lived in it XD

But seriously, 1940's would be awesome. It would be a darker plot and roleplay but I think some ocs could find themselves into the plot better than if it were in the 1990's.

Lenore - March 21, 2007 05:20 PM (GMT)
myahahahahahaha!

I have several sketchy plots written out, so I will compare them and see which ones sound better.

But 1940s = amazingness.
(Even if I do have a thing for wearing glittery black jumpers >.>)

Yes, darker annd more gritty. It would be less geared towards the Hogwarts side, but there would still be a chance for students to RP. And it would probably be 15+ for political issues and such. But that won't be a problem.

And, you are welcome anytime summer =D

I've only ever done present day HP rpgs. So that's what I voted for?

That would be freaking amazing. I don't know if it's been done before... but I'd defintately jump on that. It sounds really intriguing and could definately be fun if done correctly.

And I like the sounds of that Lenore. :) You should definately do it.

Lenore - March 21, 2007 07:45 PM (GMT)
Thank you =)
I'll start perfecting the plot soon hehe

summerdanez - March 22, 2007 12:37 AM (GMT)
And you will be sending the plotness to Ryker? Yes? -nods for Lenore- XDD

J/K. I've just been waiting for forever for a Riddle-centered rpg.

And if no one does it, I might do it...if I can XD If I pass XD

Lenore - March 22, 2007 09:57 AM (GMT)
;) I shall Owl PM you the basic plot description when I thinks its ok sounding lol.

I've written out a canon list of as best as I can, but HP information that far back is scarce heh.

I voted for 1990. Plus where you put the present day.Wouldn't that be consider the future for them?

Elmo.Knows.All - May 22, 2007 05:25 PM (GMT)
I have to vote for the 1940's for many of the reasons stated above.
    i. Voldykins is rising to power
ii. WWII raging (again, think of the drama, especially for halfblood and muggleborn families. I could always imagine some sort of hostility between different wizarding ministries based on muggle alliances, etc.)
iii. And I'm a history buff.

If it was the 1940's...I would join. No questions asked.

Personally, I enjoy playing a current day setting because all the old gang is out of school and the muggle tech is even.

heavenne - May 23, 2007 12:54 AM (GMT)
voted for victorian era, sounds different :)

As a history buff, I'd personally recommend you look into the WWI era. The political intrigue there was quite possibly at its peak. Some historians call the era the height of human stupidity, that should be 'nuff said.

I'm not a fan of 40s era, mainly because WWII is a very complex era, and I notice that once you take history into account, you see too many people screw it up. Unless an RPG puts an inordinate amount of pressure and emphasis on getting the little details right and doing the adequate research, they won't be able to encapsulate the feel and culture of the era.

Huge social, political, and economic factors went into WWII, and it's too easy to dismiss people as crazy fascist dictators and be done with it. It's hackneyed and allegorical, but people do it for the sake of simplicity. It really isn't that simple.

If you can create a true 40s style RPG, more power to you. But if you're going to create a modern day RPG with WWII, big explosions, and Lord Thingy, then bleh.

skyeh - May 29, 2007 03:49 PM (GMT)
Hard to say, really.. I love future roleplays, because it allows you to have much more freedom in terms of what goes on, and you can generally create your own world. Present day roleplays, especially for Harry Potter, are also good, because you can then use the characters you know of, as well as the plots, but the downside is that it can quite easily be a carbon copy of other sites.

Then again, I love history, so I'm really not the best person to ask for what era someone should place a Harry Potter RPG in, lirl.

aronagale - May 30, 2007 02:47 AM (GMT)
I myself prefer present day...

Between Victorian times and the 70s, there's just no canon to really grasp. It's hard to connect with it when there's so little to work from, making it hardly HP at all, at least for me.

The Mauraders time is my second favorite, but it's a difficult thing to do because there are so few canons available, and we know their fates, which also makes things difficult.

Present day, to me, seems easiest because there is not only room for original plots, but enough canon characters to go around.
