Title: Turning Over Leadership
Roswenth - February 16, 2007 08:19 PM (GMT)
This is just a question I'm curious about, but when you as an admin don't have time to lead a site, or you have another project, are you willing to let someone else lead it if it's still active? What if there's no other admin? Would you let a mod or member lead it?
I ended up turning over a site to a member and I think it was one of the best decisions I made in regards to that site, although it was hard to see that beforehand. It was an almost all male site, very fighting-oriented, and I found myself constantly at odds with many of the players because they all had a bit of a Gary Stu mentality. I took some time off from it, and ended up passing it to one of the least likely people I would have chosen to begin with, but the site is doing well, and he's much less tied up emotionally with it (which I guess is a guy thing).
I see a lot of sites die with an active membership because admins move on, so I thought I'd bring it up and see what others had to say.

I have never passed over an RPG because my main site is running strong and I'm totally dedicated to it, and my satellite sites never really got anywhere. I'm not going to give a heaping pile of junk to someone else to sort out. (tongue)
However, if I had a good site and I didn't have time to keep up with it, I would probably turn it over to the next in command. Of course, I would still check up on it and remain an admin (or a "founder" at least) and take part in major decisions. I would not totally give up the board.

Hmm… if the site was active then yes I suppose, if I didn’t have the time I would pass the site on to the next person in line or the most fitting person. Of course if there were other admins, they would automatically fall into that role, but I’d maybe promote somebody else to fill my place, the same with admins, just so the status quo was kept. If it was inactive, then if somebody expressed interest I would perhaps give the site up, it would depend.

I had a site passed onto me once. The previous admin had some personal trouble and couldn't keep up the site, I took over. THe site went well. at least for the people still on it. It wasn't a very strong site, in the sense we only had like 5-10 people. But we were all extremely active. (I remember us doing 10 pages in only a couple of hours of posting. Just 3-4 of us. One thread)
What happened is that somebody hacked the site. I wasn't main admin (Which is what I suggest you do when you pass it on. give it the main admin slot to the second in command, Don't let them go on with what they have.) this is proboards mind you, so the guy who created the site had certain powers that the others didn't have.
So I went and got hold of the admint that left to help me with this problem. She came, got rid of the hack, set everything straight. I said thanks, she left.
Fast-forward a couple of weeks later. I send out an e-mail. I want to clean up the site. It had like 50-100 registered members. only 10 posters. So I sent out an E-mail to all members that said. "Please come in and sign up to say that you are active. In a week(or two), I will delete anybody who doesn't post or say something." simple request. Anybody who actually cared would still be on the site. It may even attract people who forgot they were on that site to come back .(My main goal.) But the Admin who had laid dormant for hte last year or two, came to me pissed at my e-mail. She said who was I to delete members? She never wanted any members deleted, even if they had been active since their first post 2 years ago. She then, shortly after, closed the site for good. It sucks becuase we had so many good threads and histories and all that stuff. Gone. No warning, nothing.
This story is meant to tell you all one thing. If you hand a site over to somebody else. HAND IT OVER! If they do something you don't like,(This is excepting changing the entire premise of the site or deleting it Highly unlikely, I know, but still.) Don't attack them. You gave up your power and desicion making for the site the moment you handed over power.

I absolutely agree. I do still have admin abilities on that one site, as I am their host, but they are free to do what they want, and they have. If you just want to take some time off, make that clear to begin with. If you can't or won't continue as main admin, then step down from making the decisions.

Yes, if you are going to let go of a site, you have to make a complete cut, you can’t have it all your way… I agree.

I've had two chances to pass over leadership of a site. One time I kind of did; I made four of my closest RP friends admins so they could do everything else while I worked solely worked on keeping the plot going. So I didn't really hand it over, but I stayed in the background much more than I was before.
The second time the other admin and I just decided to close the site. We didn't really want to just hand it over to someone else and we didn't have the ability to take care of it like it should be [activity was lessening, anyway].

Honestly, success and micromanaging is an oxymoron.
I don't think any "successful" site is the result of one admin micromanaging everything, therefore any successful site should be able to undergo a change at the top without much issue. The mark of a good site is the ability to change personel without any problem.
For the record, I've had a site handed to me, and I handed off a site to someone else before, and the process really was pretty seamless as they were largely doing many of the administrative issues before the transaction occured.

Yeah....I might have to hand Tia'Orre off after high school.
Only problem is, the only guy I'd trust with it right now?
He has even more of a life than I seem to be getting. :|
