Finton Hollow is fantasy board that meets your criteria. We've really never been trendy. We sort of go our own way with things over there. We've got very brief applications, no word counts, and our board is rated for mature content.

We are nice. Go over there and talk to us about what you'd like to do in terms of character. We don't have inflated egos and we scrapped the term 'Admin' in favor of 'Story Managers'. Why? Because the whole 'Admin' thing was making it feel like a business. For us, it's a game, not a business.

There is no jumping through hoops to get your character accepted. We generally have people all cleared and ready to go the same day they apply. It is one character per account and play-bys are used on the board.

And if you can do graphics, well, that would be a boon for us. Not our strong suit. We generally focus on the story more.

Well, while The Rivalry is technically a high school board. I have been considering expanding to being a full-blown real life board, and if we can get some adult characters that would definitely sway my decision. We also allow people to apply as teachers on the board.

Hi Shelby! I have a modern/future fantasy board to offer you called Chasing the Storm, which is set in the year 2083, where dragons have awakened from a long and deep slumber only to wreak havoc upon the world. Few cities are still left standing but among them is a fictional one called Romford, located in the New York area. It's here that most of the roleplay is done but there are other places outside of the city for characters to visit, if they dare. Romford still stands due to several facts- they've been keeping dragons at bay with their small yet effective military might and the fact that it is ruled by psionics ( aka mutants ), who have overpowered humans, using them for their manual labor. Humans are treated badly and live in poor condition, with just enough food and clothing to survive along with small shelters. They are monitored, as nothing past friendships are allowed for them unless they register to have a love interest and eventually even a family. Thus their population is kept under control. This is why a Resistance has been formed. There are also creatures known as Tainted, who were either once human or psionic, or even animal, infused with psionic or animal DNA to create weapons to go against the dragons to ward off regular attacks. The labs they came from was destroyed a year ago by a massive attack on the building- not the city- causing the place to collapse and Tainted of all sorts to escape. Some have been recaptured while others have fled to the forests outside or stay within the city under refuge. Of course the city is also like a fort, with soldiers and machies, daily patrols, and defenses that keep the city, for the most part, safe from daily attacks. You can also play as the dragons, who have learned to take on human form. Some have been trying to infiltrate the city in order to learn of its weaknesses in order to bring it down while others wish to possibly ally with it, as not all dragons wish for the total destruction of mankind. Among the other races are those called the Suwani, who are shaman-like people who have adapted to living in the wilderness. They have a village not all too far from the city but are not allied with them or against them. They also have their own set of powers and can bond to an animal- much like rangers- sharing a deep connection with what they call their nesemoono.

I'm afraid we're under construction though but I didn't want to miss out on having an opportunity to have a wonderful, helpful member on our board. The construction will only take 2 weeks though and is simply due to needing to update/revamp information on everything so that members can have a better knowledge on the world their characters live in, a new skin as a sign of starting over fresh, and new plots that will keep everyone on their toes. We've been going on since April of '08 and are still moving along. So if you are definitely interested and are patient enough, I assure you will have the board open again for viewing as soon as possible! Aw, not so fussy, really. You have some good criteria, hopefully we'll fit enough that you'll give us a look. Sleepless is a real life/fantasy RP with humans and werewolves. It takes place in a small town (sorry, not big city) in the hills of northern Pennsylvania. We allow violence and gore galore, and although you currently won't find much of it there the potential for it certainly exists. Your interest in playing someone with a medical background intrigues me, because we could use doctors, nurses and EMTs. Such a character would be heavily involved in the plot.

I'll post my ad below, but the plot, in a nutshell, is that there's this small town in Pennsylvania that seems to be having a werewolf problem, but no one has quite grasped that yet. Most people think the attacks have been done by a rogue black bear that neither the rangers of the nearby state parks nor the local police force have been able to track down, and there are even rumors that a crazy cult might be involved. Some people are coming to the hospital claiming that they're werewolves (and they truly are) but since everyone knows there's no such thing as werewolves these people are treated as though they have a mental illness. They're put on a regimen of anti-psychotic meds and observed. Unfortunately, the medication can take some time to even out and patients can have episodes and relapses, which oddly enough occur during the full moon.

We are rated R/Mature, we do not have word counts, and our application process is not extensive. Sleepless is not a huge RP -- we have a relatively low member count -- but we are active. People are around every day with whom you can post. We're also very welcoming and eager to bring newcomers into the mix. Our chat feature, though, is cbox, not Chatango.

In a small Pennsylvania town just over the New York border, life has been going on much as it has for the last several decades. People wake up in the morning and go to work. Families are raised, friendships are made or broken. The old men still gather at the Wellsboro Diner every morning, just as they have since 1938, and the kids still hang outside of Peggy's Candies, counting their change. County business is conducted at the Tioga County Courthouse in the Gaslight District. Tourists still come to see the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon and shop in the stores that line Main Street.

Not a lot changes in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania.

Our story picks up in June 2010. Residents of the town go about their daily lives, interacting with one another and with the tourists who come to poke around this little whistle-stop. The biggest excitement to be had is the upcoming Laurel Festival or the latest movie to roll into the Arcadia Theater.

Something odd is surfacing, however. The Sailors & Soldiers Memorial Hospital has been reporting an increase in patients claiming to have lycanthropy. The patients are admitted to the psychiatric ward for observation for several days and treated with a regimen of neuroleptic medications before being released to their physician's care.

Very few people know about these cases. Certain members of the medical staff and a few from the police department, mainly. There's no reason for the general public to know about the inner workings of the hospital's psych ward, after all, but a few have their suspicions. The forest rangers and police force report that bear attacks are on the rise -- but these assaults only occur at night during a full moon. An unusual number of newcomers have moved to town but they are generally a secretive lot, and the long-time residents have begun to wonder what these new people find so interesting about their little town.

For the most part, however, life in Wellsboro chugs down the tracks like a Tioga Railroad engine, oblivious to the oncoming crisis that threatens to change it all forever.

The year is 3195, society as we know it has long since vanished from the earth. If you could call it earth. The world is a sea of sand. We only survived because of Euphoria, ironically the same reason that world ended. While things seem to be fine they aren't.

Not having to jump through hoops to get my character accepted I've yet to deny anyone's application and you really have to break the setting for that to happen. I'm generally pretty flexible.
Account per character boards We have sub accounts so you can have an account per character but not have to worry about logging out to switch. You can even fill out a separate profile for them.
Play-by's. Er...we don't require them. That's mostly because it's gonna be kinda hard to find a celeb that looks like a twi'lek for example. You're free to use one though. Most of us, however, don't.

Other notes
-We allow users to contribute their own information. You can expand on short wookieepedia articles, create a new Force Using tradition, create a new faction, give more information about particularly cultures, anything! Once approved, we consider it to be canon for the forum.

-There are several things going on and it's not all Jedi vs Sith. The Jedi are having to defend themselves from two fronts as the Senate is discussing the possibility of severing all ties with the Jedi Order. Also, the criminals are getting into the game thanks to the trade of Spectral Spice, an extremely potent hallucinogenic drug.

-Also, we don't have to worry about the game coming to a halt because one Sith Lord vanishes. There is no current Dark Lord of the Sith. In fact we're content to simply let them duke it out.

-We take place 100 years after KOTOR 2

-Most of our characters are actually aged 20+. In fact, the youngest character I can recall offhand is about 16 but she's one of two teenage characters.

So, my site is modern/urban fantasy, we've got friendly admins, pretty simple apps, and with the sub accounts mod we allow both APC and APP, we just ask that you sign up with an OOC account and then make the sub accounts once you have an approved character.

We're a modern day, original supernatural(genre)/Urban fantasy site, with a wide and diverse array of races to chose from. Witches, vampires, lycans of all sorts, Djinn, Fae, Elementals, Winged Humans, demons, and more. We have friendly staff who can always be found on the Cbox, and we're a friendly and welcoming community, without the usual cliques and bs you'll find on a lot of sites out there.

It's an active site, with around 35 members at the moment. We like to focus on character development and attention to detail, while still having fun and not limiting creativity.
We let people choose if they want to use a model, celeb, musician, or even have me create a 3d Poser model just for them. We allow both accounts per player, or accounts per character, linked to a 'main' account. We even have a writing challenges board,, IC Twitter, Im's, and email boards, sections for multiple rp's, Solo Rp's, even journals. We also have a gallery, member created playlists, pic request board,'tagging' system, IC and OOC Cboxes, Sub Accounts, and facebook-style instant notifications for replies and pm's.
We're self hosted, but please don't let that scare you off; it's really no different from any other board host. We use BBcode and html, (there's even a quick trick to get Dohtml working), and we are very newbie friendly. We're used to 'self-host' virgins so we'll walk you through anything you need help with!

Our app's are short, basic questions like age, height, etc, with the focus being on the history (and basics like 'height' 'age' and so on), no official word count but a suggested goal of at least 200, although a lot of us average anywhere from 500-1500 words, sometimes more, sometimes less, so it's not really an issue.
We're also very laid back, encouraging members to register and hang around getting to know people rather than demanding applications be posted the minute you join.

Over at Endless Fight we might have the roleplay for you... (A little forewarning, Endless Fight is a forum where multiple roleplays can be run at the same time. Our philosophy being: "Why settle for one roleplay on a forum when you can have all sorts of different ones with only one account?"
so if that's not your thing, I apologise for wasting your time.)

We currently have a multitude of different skins. (Last count I did we had 8. So there's bound to be one that you prefer above all others.) Though even with the different skins, you won't see any: excessive capitals, no capitalization at all, excessive punctuation or no punctuation, sidebars loaded with images, size 0 like fonts.

As for word (or paragraph) counts? I refuse to use them on my site. It's open to anyone of all skill levels. (I just ask that people do more than a single line. That's pretty easy though right?)

As far as limitations go, we're pretty open in terms of violence and gore (As long as it's not like pages and pages of torture). But sex is a strictly fade to black thing. (We have to obey our ToS after all.) But aside from those two things, pretty much everything else is fair game.

The staff is pretty laid back, but I might be a bit biased on that judgment (being staff and all) so... it's more of something you'd have to really judge for yourself. (Though I'd hope you'd find us pretty easy going.)

We don't have a chatango box but we do have a shoutbox. (It can be set for auto-refresh as well so it's nearly as good as chatango.)


Now for some specifics on the roleplay...
This particular roleplay is titled: "Oblivion Phantasy." It's set sometime in the future (I'm not certain of the exact year, but space travel has been developed and interplanetary trade is frequent. )

The application is pretty short, more or less just a description of your character and what type of job they have. You don't have to give any backstory as this'll all come out as you roleplay your character.
Though a heads up that it does use statistics, so I'm not sure whether this is a major issue for you or not.
Beyond that though it's pretty easy to get accepted. Write your application, PM the game master with your application and that's pretty much it. If there are any issues, you'll get a PM back pretty quickly to help fix things up. And if you have any questions, a quick PM or shout in the shoutbox should help clear things up for you.

And if you want a PB, then you can have a PB. The game is pretty open for what your character can look like.

Hey, Shelby~! I'm sure you've seen my boards around already but I'll give this a try, anyway. I have two boards to offer:

The Armageddon Virus is a game that takes place 200 years after an experimental strain of a virus was used in a war--pretty typical eye rolling post apocalyptic stuff, right? (I didn't know this was cliche when I first made the board... xD) Well, we have a lot of other things to offer. The game is essentially a futuristic game--not sure I'd call it fantasy, but it does contain people with odd abilities--the Rubix, soldiers who are purposely injected with the virus so they can work for the Sanctuary (which is said to be the only human civilization--bzzt wrong!) The sky's the limit in TAV. We want our members to help mold the world, so we encourage all members to contribute their own species, civilizations, etc. We have no application process and the game uses the SMF sub accounts, so it would be considered an APC game. PBs aren't mandatory, but so far, most of us use them. We also have no word count. And a doctor character would be AMAZING to have.

And then I have:

Tarot Tales is a modern fantasy game. It's a private game, meaning we don't really advertise it (though I do have it in my sig) and we usually invite people to it rather than wait for people to come to us. We could use some new blood. I'm there everyday, so I'd post with you, of course. There are only five of us there, so it's a very small community right now, so if that bothers you, I understand. We're not cliquish, however. Every single one of us would post with you at some point, as we all love to play with as many people as we can. It's also no app, no word count. Magic is a big factor, if you like that. Other races are allowed, too.
