Title: What Am I Doing Wrong?
Description: Help Please.

Hi. I've created a writing site that is basically like the popular graphics sites, except it is for writers. I've advertised everywhere I can possibly think of and I've even joined as two other people to make it seem like the site is more active, but it isn't. I have contests open and I've posted a few of my own pieces to help move it along, but it is stuck in quicksand and sinking slowly. It my site too overwhelming, does it turn people away from joining? I don't know. Can anyone give me some tips or advice? Please. (ouch)

It's rather large and perhaps that makes it a bit overwhelming. I'm not quite too sure what the difference between the fiction/nonfiction/fanfic/poetry section and the notebook section is. They seem the same to me but with a different organization. I'm not quite too sure what the request category "Ask away" is. I think that that could be compressed.

You have a creative idea, definitely, but as creative ideas go people are not always willing to join something out of the ordinary. Therefore, your board needs an extra boost. I'm not quite too sure what that would be, but I can tell you that if you want people to join, start posting everywhere (even as the other accounts, as you mentioned) so the last time people posted in a forum was not "December 8" or some other time long past.

In what little I know of writing sites, they take alot longer to develop than rpgs. Try advertising on more writing-based sites or on advanced forums. Those places will have more of the people who'd be opt to join. Don't be discouraged that you don't have more members- they'll come streaming in eventually if you advertise enough.

- The layout is a little confusing and overwhelming at first.
- IMO, the layout isn't really suitable.
- The "IPB" forum markers look ugly. =/

I would also suggest hiding the writing from guests. Most writing boards do that so members feel more comfortable posting their writing, and it cannot be stolen as easily.

fix the buttons and such to something that suits the skin and is customised. I'm pretty sure that skin comes with a pre made button set, if not, they are pretty easy to make.
A site that looks 'loved' by the admins is more likely to gain members, then a site that looks half done.

Also I'm not loving the notebook system. I don't think you should have advanced, beginner, etc, etc becasue it can make someone feel low about their writting. Perhaps changing it to simply "Completed" "Accepted" stuff like that. People with a highier self esteem tend to write more, and they may be willing to post more on the site

Thank You! I am going to change a few things and hide a few things, now. Thanks for the help, you all rock. (happy)

*EDIT* I have made the Changes, can someone let me know what they think of it and offer some feedback. I would be most appreciated. (smile)

It's still very, very forum heavy and even just sitting here it's overwhelming. Many news members don't want to sit and read what all the forums are about.

I agree with what others have said - why have different categories for the notebooks and 'the good ol' days...'? Wouldn't people just be repeating themselves? Maybe the good ol' days part could be a distinct critique section (which would mean condensing it with 'Tell it like it is...').

I really like the idea, though! I've only seen one other site that is specifically for writers and even that leaned towards RP instead of writing in general. Good luck! =).
