I don't know if this has been discussed before, but here we go,.. :p
Question to everyone; What makes a RPG successful? What makes a game considered 'good' and 'fun' and is there a difference between the two?
What are the mistakes a GM often do in which they find themselves with an inactive RPG?
For me, it's succesful if the people that are there are posting and having fun, whether there are 3 of them or 30.
For it to be fun? I dunno. Sometimes it's light hearted hijinx, sometimes it's big serious plots. There's just too much and it's too mood dependant. As long as I'm writing with someone with a well realised character, who posts regularly and gives me stuff to reply to, I guess that's always gonna work well.
What leads to inactive RPs? Well, if the staff don't post, no one else will. I've seen it so many times. Don't assume your players'll carry on without you, no matter how active they are/seem.
Well, my members enjoy themselves. Therefore, I consider us to be successful. A lot of admins tend to get discouraged when a million people don't join up in the first week - and from my experience, it takes years to get to that point. A lot of admins also don't put time into making their site name known. It's not enough to just post in a directory, or slap your ad on a couple of guest friendly boards. You need to push it.
But a successful RPG runs off the dedication of the staff, and the members picking up on that. Dedicated staff = happy and dedicated members = more members = success.
