Title: Podcasts, Input Wanted ^^

ShinLi - October 24, 2006 09:23 AM (GMT)
As some of you have noticed there is a topic here about podcasts. Well I was very interested in this and threw the idea of making a podcast for RPG-D into the staff room. The ones who replied we're very positive about it, and so I thought it was a nice idea to share it with you. And hopefully that you could help us with some more input and ideas for the podcasts content.

I had some ideas already... so I want to see what you think of these ideas.

*cough*

- Latest News and Updates from theRPG-D and the world of RPG's
- Birthday of members
- Funny quotes and or things that happend either on the board in forums, pm's and/or IM convo's between members and staff members. (things could maybe be send in to us by members)
- Anwsering questions from members which they send in (questions could be related to RPG-D, but could also be semi-personal, so what we think of certain things, or even maybe semi-personal questions related to us.)
- A discussion, (about roleplay's, roleplaying, forums, management, chracters, rpg genre's etc.). (Members could for instance send in senarios or ideas for the discussion where we then pick out the most interesting.)

Those we're my first ideas. Also if you have any suggestions of what you'd wanted to hear in the podcast, put them here. Basically I want to involve our members as much as possible in this podcast. And this will be better when we get a lot of input from the members.

I myself think this podcast would be great fun. And I think most of our staffies would want to help record it.

Thanks for reading and for your input of course. Any questions related to this topic can be put in here too so we can anwser it.

Toni-May - October 26, 2006 11:05 AM (GMT)
I think that idea is fantastic. And would be so much fun… is this something that if given more positive feed back will be happening soon?

ShinLi - October 26, 2006 11:25 AM (GMT)
Well the staffies, Horse, Jess, Andy and Melly have already reacted very positive. But I would love to get some more input from the members. So I'm very glad you replied Toni.

It will happen in the coming period. After we have gotten a bit more feedback and ideas, we just need to figure out how to record everything. Seeing I'm in the Netherlands, Jess and Andy in England and Horse and Melly in the USA XD.

But if you have any ideas or something that you would like to hear in the podcast, feel free to put it down here.

Toni-May - October 26, 2006 11:31 AM (GMT)
well like you mentioned I think funny things would be a great thing to put on there, as well as things that are happening around the site. Hmm as for anything else I’m not that sure… I just think it would be a great thing, and especially informative with the members you have coming in and out of the site daily.

Abhorsen Torrigan - November 20, 2006 10:32 PM (GMT)
This sounds really good! Looking forward to any developments XD

Forever Obsessed - November 20, 2006 10:55 PM (GMT)
I always meant to comment on this, but as I was a newnewNEW member when this went up I didn't feel comfortable. And now that I remember XD

I think it would be a great idea! It would most likely increase circulation of RPG-D if you enter it into various Podcast toplists around the web as well and entertain the members of RPG-D while presenting various information.

I'm also oddly interested in hearing everybody's voice. . :D

As for recording (way up there. .and a long time ago. .) I'm sure you could do something with microphones and recording at the same time? Heh, don't ask me ^.^

It'll also fit into all of the new changes that are to take place here at RPG-D :D

Abhorsen Torrigan - November 20, 2006 11:08 PM (GMT)
Well, I'm not sure how'd you fit it time-wise, but the actual recordings pretty easy, it's been mentioned on a podcast I listen to.

You can use a free-recording software called Audacity, and then the free calling software Skype. You call each other, and talk, whilst recording your end of the conversation. You then all send your files to one person, who assembles them so they fit togehter and wala! A podcast xP

Forever Obsessed - November 20, 2006 11:14 PM (GMT)
Ahh, why didn't I think of that?!

I've messed with Audacity oodles of times, it's a very nifty program :D The BETA's very cool too, though I haven't put too much time into messing with it :D

Though Skype is a new program to me, which is probably why I didn't connect Audacity to it and think of Podcast :D

ShinLi - November 20, 2006 11:30 PM (GMT)
We all have Skype, so that's great. So if one of you could give me a link to that free program, it's greatly appreciated. At least I can start figuring out that program.

It might seem to other people we actually abandoned this idea. We didn't actually. It's just that the staff has been quite busy so no real progress has been made in thinking up a program. So ideas and suggestions are still welcome.

Thank you both Forever Obsessed and Abhorsen for the time to comment ^^. It's really greatly appreciated.

Forever Obsessed - November 20, 2006 11:32 PM (GMT)
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

There's linkage XD And no problem, I'd love to hear a Podcast from all of you guy's :D

And I'd reccomend starting with Version 1.2.6, even though the BETA's easy, it has some major annoying bugs :(

If you ever need any help, just give me a shout XD

ShinLi - November 21, 2006 12:16 AM (GMT)
Ah brilliant. I downloaded it and it looks quite like a program I used for a whole two days in a project week where we had to make a radio story. So I'm quite used to editing sound to eachother to make one complete thing out of it. I just need to figure out everything and I'll be fine ^^. Thanks so much, this helps a lot of the technical stuff already, we don't really have to worry about that anymore.

Forever Obsessed - November 21, 2006 12:18 AM (GMT)
Yay! -anxiously waits for more updates on the Podcast :D-

Abhorsen Torrigan - November 21, 2006 07:23 AM (GMT)
That's okay! Can't waittttt!

Emuerz - November 28, 2006 02:31 AM (GMT)
I'm a bit late, but a Podcast would be totally wicked. ^_^ Really hope you go through with it!

Alexis Quinn - January 10, 2007 05:59 AM (GMT)
If any of the staff have a program called Garageband for Mac you'll find podcasting to be as easy as 123. With skype as the source of sound, the podcasting editing tools are simple and the internet upload is even simpler. If y'all have trouble getting the thing up and running, just give me a buzz and I'll be happy to help.

shehates - January 10, 2007 09:58 AM (GMT)
This sounds like a fab idea. I'd certainly be interested in hearing what you guys had to say about things. You guys could have like a weekly discussion topic and then move to like questions from forum members and such.

Melly - January 10, 2007 10:56 PM (GMT)
The staff as a whole is moving towards creating a podcast, we just have not had very much time to test the software.

We still would love opinions from everyone and even some possible topic options for the first podcast.

Remember this is for you, so we's love to know what you'd like to hear.

Garelock - March 15, 2007 06:29 PM (GMT)
Well, I think it's a great idea. It'd take this place up to the next level in my opinion. Then again, I don't imagine you'd need to go up many more levels. This place is like crazy popular on the net so I don't think you'd need much more PR.

Eh, when do you think the testing will be done?

OMG ... I <3 garage band!
I really want it, but alas ... earwax I have Samsung. <.<

Techno!Tim - October 23, 2007 07:22 PM (GMT)
Uhm...

I'd recommend using a program called 'Audacity' (free, www.download.com) that's really easy to use. You can record MP3's and then with a bit of XML coding and a server (which I assume you have seeing as you've changed your domain), you can have a podcast up and rolling in just a few hours. And then a few more minutes later load your XML file to iTunes so your members can automatically receive updates.

Yeah.. PM me or send me a message or anything if you need clarification. Check my profile for my addresses you can reach me on.

I like that idea.

Maybe each week you could have a specific theme - taking for example, "problems with starting up your own roleplay".

You'd get an 'expert' or two to send in a narration or actually record their own voice and send it for podcasting use, and also have questions relating to the topic.

If you were really ambitious, you could center the whole podcast around it - eg, have funny stories about starting up roleplays, have hints and tips about it, and a user-guide or something. Common mistakes, FAQ...

...gah, all this potential. :D

Mm, be careful about using people's voices though. I'm sure it's fine for people over a certain age, but below a certain age and parents might object. =/
Something to bear in mind, I guess.

sarahj - December 21, 2007 01:30 AM (GMT)
I think a podcast would be pretty sweet. I know this is very late, but I hadn't heard anything about it after this topic- are you still planning on this actually happening or was it just an idea thrown around?

Personally, I think 'funny quotes' sections from different roleplays would be hilarious. Just from the sites I'm on, I think there's enough footage for a podcast in those sections alone. Reading some from different sites around RPG-D and having the staff commenting on them could be enough for a great fairly-easy podcast.

If you get this up-and-running, it could be a fun ongoing thing. Every month you could pick a new topic and have the members vote on what they'd want to hear.

As far as the person above me's comment about parent's objecting, I can see where they're coming from, but how else can a podcast be done without using your own voice?

purpledemon - December 21, 2007 04:02 PM (GMT)
There is a type of podcasting which is completely electronic, where you type in what you want the voice to say. I personally cannot see the point of this type of podcast (there are many of them) because it takes out the personal element that makes them entertaining.

And in regards to parent's objecting, that is simple. If you are under 18 and want to do a podcast ask, if you are over 18 who is to argue with you?

This topic has been left opened and never processed for quite sometime however, and I don't think RPG-D would have a podcast sometime soon, although it would be cool. I remember when I had my own podcast for one of my forums, it was loads of fun! :)
