Short Info about the Board:

The city of Brewerton maybe one of the most beautiful places in South Carolina. Located in the center of gorgeous Wilmore County, Brewerton is a thriving, cheerful-looking community that anyone would think would make the perfect place to live or raise children. The comfortable kind of place where people are born, grow up, get married, make a family, and retire happily.

Looks can be deceiving.

While the landscape is pristine, the attitudes of the residents of Brewerton and Wilmore County could be considered hostile. Not to strangers, though—no, newcomers are welcomed with open arms. No, the hostility of the population centers around one thing and one thing alone… school rivalry.

Nearly 150 years ago Brewerton High School was established within the Brewerton city limits. Only the richest students could afford to attend at first, but eventually the school expanded and became the public school it is today. Reaching three stories high, this large school houses a relatively small population of students.

It was 100 years ago that the Wilmore County High School was established to allow the poorer, county students the same education as the rich city-folk. This one-story, recently renovated building houses many more students than the city school in a much smaller area, yet the students are comfortable in their own skin, so to speak.

It was 150 years ago that the rivalry developed. The Brewerton city residents, thinking the county people were dim and slow, seeing as they lacked organized educational systems, swiftly gained a prejudice against them. The county residents, recognizing the injustice they were faced with, quickly began to think of the city dwellers and elitist and snobbish. When the two groups began competing with the establishment of WCHS, the rivalry truly began.

Now, in 21st century, the whole area is segregated. The prejudices of old have been passed down between generations, and even young, elementary-aged children know that they’re not allowed to associate with people from the other school. The people of Brewerton High and those at Wilmore County High are no different from eachother, but the stereotypes and prejudices they’ve been raised to believe still stand. Some students are intelligent enough to know there’s no point to this rivalry, some others are completely against it… however, most of the people in the area believe in it with their whole mind, heart, and soul.

For the most part, everyone knows where they belong, and are sure to stick to it. Few people manage to venture to the ‘neutral’ parts of town, young people know their whole family’s reputation is at stake to be seen with friends from the rival school

A recent development, however, breaks the stagnate peace the communities have been living in. The city council has decided that the city limits shall increase for several miles each way, forcing several former-Wilmore County families to send their children to Brewerton High or pay high tuitions to send them out of their new district. These students face adversity from all sides—their old schoolmates think them traitors, while their new ones think them unworthy.

It’s the 2006/2007 school year, and it’s the first year that the new mandate has been in place.
