Title: How did you get into RPing?

arianna - August 15, 2006 04:39 AM (GMT)
I was wondering how everyone got into RPing. I started in '04. I joined Horseland then in talk heaps of people were trying to get people to join their RPGs. At first I thought it was really stupid then I checked one out an joined it. At first I only did Wild Horse RPGs, but now I do lots of different types, mainly Humans who own horses though.

What about you guys?

Karah - August 15, 2006 04:51 AM (GMT)
I am obsessed with this TV show Gilmore Girls and joined a GG message board soon after the show started. At first I wasn't at all interested in RPGs and then last October I found one that seemed interesting on the GG message board I was on. It was fun while it lasted because just after Christmas it died. After that I started creating my own and have done maybe about 10 RPG's. I love TV or Movie realated RPGs, original RPGs, and high school RPGs wether they be public school or boarding school RPGs.

I've always been told that I was a good writer. Ever since I was a kid, I would write in my spare time, even if that meant just coming up with seemingly random short stories that involved one-dimensional characters and weak plotlines.

Naturally, when the opportunity presented itself a few years back, I jumped at the chance to write and tell stories at the same time.

Vaati - August 15, 2006 11:57 AM (GMT)
I just became addicted to some games, Zelda, Pokemon, Megaman, and probably a lot more that I might of forgot. Then I found a few RPs of these games. I was instantly addicted.

Timeless Melody - August 15, 2006 04:05 PM (GMT)
Well let's see...

A few years ago I joined neopets. (I was young and naive. :p ) After I got bored of that I found Horseland, and being that I had horses and was obsessed, I got hooked. I became very good at that game, and then realized what a waste of time it was considering I had horses of my own. So needless to say, I quit.

(I'm really not sure why I mentioned the above stuff since it really doesn't have anything to do with rp'ing...)

Anyway, moving on. Well in 8th grade (I am now in 11th) one of my friends, Emily, used to have me read through the stories she'd write and have me edit them. Most of them were fantasy themed with fairies and dragons and that sort of thing. Not exactly my favorite genre to say the least. Finally she wrote a Harry Potter fan fiction and linked me to it on HPFF.com so I could read it outside of school as well.

I checked out the site and thought it was pretty cool. Soon enough I was writing my own stories at HPFF. After about a year of that I was cruising around amanda's (legolasprinceofmyheart) page and saw that on her page was a link to a place called Envious Magic. Of course I clicked it. Now at first I thought the idea was rather silly, but after adding it to my favorites and giving it a few days of looking around I finally joined.

I've now been a member for over a year, and through people I've met off of that site I've joined multiple others. Even made quite a few on my own. So my starting rp'ing was sheer dumb luck. :laugh.png

I think I was about.. 9. And I had this much older friend who RPed, and wanted to get me into it. So she'd bring me into a chatroom with a bunch of her friends, and I just kinda sat on the sidelines and watched them RP. I learned from that, and later started RPing Sailor Moon with a group of others(was Neptune) and which has now broken up for the most part. So... I think that's what pretty much started it. Darn internet influenced me to rp.

Shoresome - August 18, 2006 02:13 PM (GMT)
The two school years before high school, I was involved on a quick passed side-scrolling cartoonish shooter and fell in with a group of people that liked to RP. I was drawn first into IM roleplay and then onto random boards to try out. This was just a taste, for in my 8th grade year my English teacher helped unlock a knack for writing that had been hiding in the depths of my mind. And that became combined with this light dabbling in RPing and became an all consuming addiction for some time. I'm better now, I swear! (dashes off to post on a board) ;)

Alakyl - August 18, 2006 02:21 PM (GMT)
^^ I, too joined neopets years ago, and found the roleplaying boards. I became instantly addicted, and sometimes stayed up to ungodly hours of the morning to roleplay. Then I discovered forums, and liked those better because I didn't have to spend a lot of time at one time to roleplay...and it grew from there into a horrible, overactive imagination monster. ^_^ *pets him*

kudo - August 18, 2006 07:01 PM (GMT)
I'm not quite sure, but I totally sucked at first. I think I was on KawaiiVille (back when it was PBF, a forum for graphic people, with 6,000 something members) and someone mentioned RPGs so I joined one and uh I quit for a few months before finding Cambridge High and stuff. It might've been through my sister when I went through our history when we shared a computer. I don't know.

megan. - August 19, 2006 10:41 PM (GMT)
When I was like eight & playing neopets I liked to lurk around the chat boards a lot. One day I snooped around the Roleplay board and saw topics involving Pokemon & Digimon which I was totally obsessed with at the time, so I was genuinely curious and read through the posts. I caught on pretty quick & I guess I decided it was sort of like how my friends and me acted out tv shows at recess, only this was in writing. I started off horribly, no doubt, asterisks and all, but I'm glad I got into roleplaying at such an early age otherwise I don't think I'd be half the writer I am today.

Ademis - August 21, 2006 02:14 PM (GMT)
I play Guild wars and WoW i think that explains it enough lol

Talbain - August 28, 2006 05:01 AM (GMT)
When I was eight I was horrendously obssessed with Digimon, *still kinda like it* and I happened upon a RPG board on EZboard. I joined and started attempting it... Though I was only able to spit out two sentences with asterisks...Oh how sad... Then I started moving on to other things... Eventually I was really into DBZ and roleplayed on those sorts and earned alot of Admin experience.. Then I found Harry Potter :D Though I didn't read it till alot later on, I fell in love and recently in the past few years became solely obssessed and have worked to improve as an RPer since.

RandomRedRose - August 28, 2006 10:42 PM (GMT)
I started about a year ago, when I clicked on a link from HPFF. I had been into reading the fanfiction, and had started writing my own story when the link to Envious Magic blinked onto my screen. I clicked it, and I've been hooked ever since.

KakashiPrince - September 2, 2006 01:24 AM (GMT)
basically in IMVU forum i saw naruto fans doing rp text i made a forum for them!

xX.ghost_flame.xX - September 3, 2006 07:47 PM (GMT)
Me...I first got into rping because of MSN. It was just like little chatrooms when I was like twelve named Pool Party and you acted as ifyou were at a Pool Party and it was basically all one liners ,but it was fun you know back then. But, soon it got boring and all of my internet buddies grew up and that was when I went over to Yahoo and started to rp in their custom chatrooms ,but only the X-Men ones though. It wasn't one liners though it was more paragraph or two paragraphs and there was like this unwritten rules to it and no one had a character that was too powerful or anything. And there were us regulars I remember a couple of them, Rikku, Punisher, Jinx, Hippie, and there was another guy just can't remember his name and I lost contact with them.

Then I went back to MSN and joined X-Men groups were I roleplayed and made friends and things and over the summer one of them went away and and we had like this BIG major thread going so we stopped it for the entire summer and I forgot about it and that is that. Somehow I forget I wound over at an Invisonfree Harry Potter forum this one was advanced which I beginner especially since I had stopped rping for a while. Going to another site called Darkstrome I stayed there for months until it started to die. And now I just go to Charmed, Harry Potter, and X-Men sites.

RobTheBob - September 3, 2006 07:56 PM (GMT)
My friend, Chrisdood (he's up here), got me into it. I blame him for my corruptness.

Deception - September 4, 2006 07:51 AM (GMT)
I read a book where people where being killed the smaeway as there characters in an rpg and just had to see first hand what was so great about the whole thing and I'm glad I did.

PyroWarriorZ - September 6, 2006 08:15 PM (GMT)
Well my siblings use to play D&D, so I got into it and than my friend told me i could do Rp on comp, it was like D&D and I fell in love!

& infactuation - September 6, 2006 11:30 PM (GMT)
i started on neopets, actually.

then i went to the guilds on there. wolf role plays all the way, kids.

aaaand. then i came off neopets.

_perfectmistake - September 6, 2006 11:35 PM (GMT)
Hrmm. In April of last year I was on the computer looking up "Harry Potter" Then I came to Harry POtter fanfiction [dot] com. And then i found this link for a graphic requesting place (The Dark Arts) and found a RPG site advertised there. I fell in love. And after that I just started doing it all the time. That's it.

Copper - September 7, 2006 12:03 AM (GMT)
i don't remember how I heard about play-by-post, but I know that when I first heard about it, I thought it was only possible with wolves. I decided "Hey, I'm bored, can't find any good games, lets search for one of those wolf roleplays" so I searched Topwebgames untill I found a play-by-post called Wolfpeak. And well... the magic started from there ^_^

Lenore - September 13, 2006 12:25 AM (GMT)
I cant remember really.
I know that my RP was so damned rubbish back then that I would be ashamed if anyone found my posts. I am talking two liners without spell check.
Ah, those cringy days.
Now, I am pleased to say that I can actually spell correctly at least, and write 8 paragraphs on a good day. I think maybe I might have started out on a goth/vampire RP board. With a really bad character.
From tiny acorns, mighty oak tree's grow

[IxN] Admin - September 13, 2006 06:39 PM (GMT)
Like probably a lot of people, I started on Neopets, and then joined a few Harry Potter RPG. That was the first thing that I RPed, and then after watching and reading the Chronicles of Narnia, I decided to RPing that. XD

XenoDream - September 14, 2006 12:02 AM (GMT)
I dunno, it really had to start on ezboard way back then. Probably 5 years or something ago, when I was 10. Playing many different types of RPGs, from High School, Harvest Moon, Pokemon, Samurais, Fighting, etc.

Chexdex - September 17, 2006 02:09 PM (GMT)
Well I love Charmed. Though Sadly it ended at the end of this passt May. About a year ago almost two I joined this Charmed Forum. It was a general Charmed Forum but it has a section for RP. So I decided, what the hell I try it out. I got addicted quick. Whn I opened my own Charmed forum I made an RP section too. Then just recently I made a Boarding School RP.

SheWulph - September 18, 2006 06:11 PM (GMT)
A friend pmed me on a discussion board quote:"Want to rp." that's basically how it all started for me.

.heeHAW. - September 18, 2006 07:27 PM (GMT)
I started in Mid '02, so that would've made me 10, and i first started playing neopets. XDD When i scanned around on the forums, i saw role-playing, and i wanted to try it out. So, i wasn't the best, but then i started to get the hang of it, and a friend told me about Gaiaonline. I joined like, a year later because of my laziness, and over Gaia, i met a few people who owned RPG sites. Thankfully, i met someone who RP's on HSRP, and i joined. So i forgot all about neopets, but i still go on Gaia. :] I would be so bored if i never found any of these sites.

Desire - September 19, 2006 01:44 AM (GMT)
not sure how it actually started. I have always been a writer, and had been working on a character a loved, Seregwen. I wanted to put her into new situations and such and somehow stumbled upon the yahoo chat room rpg boards.
After playing there for awhile, me and riends started a 'forum' of sorts. We would get online at a certain time that worked or most if us. We created a conferance and one of us remembered where we were and wrote a quick update before we started.
We rped there for a few months until I discovered Invisionfree. Made my first actual forum and we moved our daily meetings to there. That site unfortunately died after xmas...but by then I had found more sites so it wasn't so bad.

And thats how it all began, about 3/4 years ago

Red Blaze - September 22, 2006 07:49 PM (GMT)
Well, I first started in a board about Sonic. I have my main character that represents me (Red Blaze. Duh). And boy was it fun. It was my first time, and we were on a roll. From then on, I found RPing very entertaining.

I tried RPing on MSN, and AIM at some points, but it was pretty difficult. I guess it was because I was on my own and on one really knew me. Still, Message Boards are good enough for me. :p

Kotori - September 23, 2006 10:09 PM (GMT)
Well, if we're talking about RPing online....lesse....I was about 14 and it was '98? It was this general Sailor Moon discussion chat (don't ask, those days are far behind me) and there was some disorganized role-playing going on there. I don't think I joined an "official" RPG until I was about 16 or so and had regular internet access. It was a free-form fantasy chat based on IRC (but you could access it through a browser), called Inn of the Green Dragon. They also had message boards for role playing as well.

...man, that was a while ago.

I just did a quick search, and I think it's still up and running...although it's completely different now.

Haylizzle - September 25, 2006 09:01 PM (GMT)
Well,
I started off at High School RPs on Neopets,
and duh, I sucked.
Someone neomailed me one day and sent me a link to a beginners RPG, and I loved it.
Then, from there, I found Manor House [my first real RPG board].
& Well, it just sort of went uphill from there. [:

&.&LightLife&.& - September 25, 2006 09:43 PM (GMT)
I usually posted on a forums hosted by VBullitian all about this one disney game. Then I found out they had an RPG forum, and started RPGing there.. When I found out some rules said that I couldn't have romance or violence, I made a new site especially for my friends from the site. And then, I found out about RPGs by looking at the main board directory.

Kiari - September 25, 2006 10:41 PM (GMT)
I started RPing YuYuHakusho, YuGiOh, and Anime Kindergarden on Neopets. God was I a n00b back then. I freaking wrote in play format!

"Blah: Der der der
Blah: Der Der Der"

I can't believe it! That was years ago though. Like, MANY years.
And I stuck with it!

I played D&D before any of that with my dad & little brother, tho.
Usually a mage.
Though now I play lots of Druids and HALFLING ROGUES.
-love for the Halfling Rogues-

bloodless soul - September 27, 2006 09:52 PM (GMT)
I got into roleplaying, because I needed something new to do so I joined some other roleplaying sites. And thats basically how I got into roleplaying.

Damon - September 30, 2006 08:56 PM (GMT)
ahh...two days ago? yeah about that lol. I've known about Roleplaying on boards for a long time I've written stories all of my life, some of them even being good. I've also one on one roleplayed for a few years with friends etc.

PartyLik3APanda0 - October 16, 2006 12:23 AM (GMT)
I was.. what, ten? I was into Harry Potter, and my sister had just joined a forum and I was in one of those 'do everything my siblings do' phases, so I joined too. I was very active at first, but as I started to understand the site, I started to roleplay. I was a really crappy role-player back then, but as the years went on, my role-playing skills progressed. And soon enough, I was in love with it.

Thats the story.

Cammi - October 16, 2006 05:32 AM (GMT)
hhmm well..sadly I also started on Neopets, About eight years ago. Anyway, it all started when I got a 'neomail' (form of PM if someone doesn't know) from some random person inviting me to join a roleplaying guild. It was about Vampires..So I did! It was great, running around with all these one liners, playing some preppy, common girl. Anyway, I started to get bored with that when I found a wolf RPG now I was on that for a while it actually had a pretty good plot. Then I kinda drifted away from Animals and went towards Harry Potter for a long, long time. Then I left the roleplay world for a little while, concentrating more on my school work..and now I have a lot of free time! SO I'm coming back into the world that I so sorely miss. Anyway - I'm on the search for a good roleplay. Probably wont be Harry Potter unless I chance upon an original plot that gets my attention. Besides Infamy and Entropy. Fantastic plot, just way to much for me to take in. ^_^

Kenren - October 16, 2006 06:29 AM (GMT)
.hack//SIGN

Shuziro - November 12, 2006 03:12 PM (GMT)
I got into role-playing because I played Final Fantasy alot and read fantasy books =p

Bethy - January 13, 2007 08:14 AM (GMT)
I got interested in rps when I joined a Rupert Grint forum. Then slowly at searched for other harry potter rpgs to satisfiy my addiction. (tongue) With a help of a friend, we started a Harry Potter RPG. Then we started another rpg based on my favorite tv show the tribe! (happy) This addiction will never end! (lovestruck)
