Title: What Do You Prefer In Your Threads?
Description: just curious...
Atricea - October 2, 2008 04:29 PM (GMT)
I've found lately that I easily loose my RP "muse" in threads that don't contain certain things. If a thread starts with lots of conflict I'm good, but if it then becomes calm and all is just happiness and fluff, it easily bores me. So I was wondering what other people prefer to be in their RP threads, to keep them interested and to spark their inspiration for said thread... :)
These poll-choices were just what I could come up with, so if you have another thing in a thread that sparks your muse, just say so - I'm just curious
I've made it so you can choose up to 5 things that sparks your inspiration most...

I love anger. =3 And conflict.
One of my very favourite characters is a Slytherin, and he's a triplet, and all three of them are renown in this present-day HP forum for being completely ass-like to anyone who gets in their way. And that's just anyone that's not in Slytherin. And then Rufus (my character) ends up falling for this Ravenclaw girl. And then for the next few months, they keep seeing each other more often than not.
And then it's all conflicted because he's actually /scared/ of his little sister. XD He doesn't want to admit that he likes this Ravenclaw, and when something eventually happens between them, they ended up staying quiet about it for months. And then they ended up breaking up, just because I wanted some conflict to play out. XD
So yeah. Conflict and anger = gooood. <3

Woop! fluff XD I usually like adventure (Mostly because i spent like, the last year on a fantasy RPG where every thread was a different adventure weeeee...)
But i do like fluffy ones too :3 where there is hints of stuff, that's cute XD But yeah, depends on the character and plot of the board i guess. :pink:
edit: wow.. my spelling sucks x__x

I'd like to think I prefer a good blend of ALL of them at some point. For most of my threads, they're pretty calm, with a little talking and a little action, but if there's a specific plot for that thread, I'd want it to obviously go along with it.
The plots that I usually become a part of are dramatic and include revenge/torturing someone my character dislikes. =X
Even when my character is nice (i.e. Aidan Callahan, my happy-going 3rd year Hufflepuff and my Remus on another site), they somehow end up involved in some kind of plan to do something horrible to someone who did something to them. >.>

I voted for lots of talk, lots of action, conflict, and fluff.
Because it's very hard for me to crank out decent posts. I can do it, but what takes someone else 5 to 10 minutes takes me 30 to 45. I'm a slow writer. :p
So I find it alot easier to get something decent out if there's alot going on. I don't really like boring posts where nothing is really happening and they're just making small talk. That's why I like conflict. Alot of my characters end up having an attitude problem or anger issues or a quick temper, because I think it's more fun. It makes things intense.
I also like a little bit of fluff, when its appropriate. The overly sweet stuff has a time and place, but I'm more of a fan of the tiny cute moments. But throw conflict in too, because even fluff can get boring without it.
Mac-a-roni - October 2, 2008 05:36 PM (GMT)
I like all of it. *shrugs* Different threads call for different things, but I like all of them in certain situations. They each have their pros and cons. xD

OTHER: HUMOR. I NEED THAT OR ELSE I HAVE NOTHING TO ENTERTAIN MYSELF WITH.
Katgirlxx - October 2, 2008 06:48 PM (GMT)
All of the above? :3
But the things I usually prefer are fluff, and drama. Conflict is awesome, but conflict followed by fluff is bestest (MAKE UP SEX HAI.) I don't think I've ever RPed anything super action-y in the sort of RP that is seen around here, because I like my action FAST, as in the whole RP is over in a few hours, instead of stretched over days, and days, and days.
But conflict. With yellings and misunderstandings, and potential throwings of ficus :3 love it.

All things in moderation; I care about the quality of the writing and characters more than any particular element of the post. If the writing's no good, none of the elements are going to be enjoyable. But if the poster is a good writer, I'll be inspired by whatever they do.
Writing ethics aside, it bugs me when threads get too slow, have no point, and there's no emotional investment. So action, lots of varying emotions and character facets whether it's through drama or comedy or whatever, and some sort of plot-related purpose are what get my brain going.

Conflict always sparks what I think is my best roleplaying. Especially with one of my characters.
I also like quick convos - one or two lines back and forth. Quick questions, snappy retorts, lots of fun.
Action is fun. Anger is also fun, related to my love of conflict in a game.
And suspense...nothing like the GM deciding to leave everyone hanging and going mad wondering what's going to happen next. I once spent a week wondering if my character was even alive or not.

I like conflict, anger, and sarcasm. Humor really gets me writing hard and fast, and makes me giggle endlessly for hours. :3
I'm also a fan of angst, but in small doses.

SURPRISE!
Hehe. I love when things take an unexpected turn. Especially as admin, when plotting things out, it can get reaaaaaaallly tedious to see posts come out as they were supposed to. Not that it isn't good to watch a plot go on it's way, but it's somewhat boring if it's everything you expect.
I also love 'burn' moments, one liners that make you giggle for hours, and kooky little happenings that aren't really relevant - but still amuse. Something to react to, I think, is all I really want. The point of postee, yes?

Awkward Situations always make my day.

Lots of action, conflict, cruelty, and perhaps a little heroism attract my attention the most when writing. I've gotten increasingly more bored of the meet-'n-greet threads. If it attracts my attention, it usually has action of some sort or an obvious conflict (and it doesn't necessarily have to be violent, either).
Shadow of the Rain - October 4, 2008 11:03 PM (GMT)
Drama: I keep my RL very drama-free because I can't stand it in my own life, but in TV, books, etc, I can't get enough! So obviously I love drama in my RPs as well.
Conflict: Who doesn't like conflict in RPs? If two characters are about to tear each other's heads off, I am one very happy RPer. And for some reason I love seeing my characters abused by other characters. Let them be embarrassed! Have them lose the fight! Sometimes the other players end up feeling sorry for my poor chars cuz I'm always encouraging them to be mean to 'em.
Angst and Romance: These I only like if they're done well, but when they are it's sooooo fun! I don't like "hey, I'm hot, you're hot, so let's be bf/gf kthxbai!" nor do I like "Let's try and have a semblance of plot and say our chars hate each other but secretly like each other....but two posts into our first thread they're already snogging." Same goes for angst. No random cutting oneself. No "I'm a happy character who rarely gets upset but I'm gonna be all emo right now just because my player feels like it." Only relevant angst and romance, please!
Other: I'm also a big fan of character development/bonding. Two people getting to know more about each other, slowly but surely becoming friends, or finding out why one character acts the way he does, etc.
Asunder - October 5, 2008 12:42 AM (GMT)
Adventure, conflict, characters thrown into situations they can't possibly win. But try anyways. Nothing like constant defeat to inspire one to try harder, after going emo then recovering because best friend/lover/sibling killed. xD I don't like talking, like blah blah blah. Most of my characters are scared sht!less of 'things that go bump in the night' or those random 'so and so pops into the conversation oh hi my name is blah what's your name nice place isn't it, etc etc.'
I neeeed, plot. Random threads get boring fast for me. I need something that will keep me wanting to write. Its like a movie, if the first 30 minutes are boring talking about bs, then I'm gonna turn it off and put in Die Hard. xD Romance threads are only fun if they're unexpected, people been traveling together for awhile, not random 'oh that girl's pretty let me walk up to her and we'll fall in love in three posts and go screw'.
And good quality posts! If I spend an hour typing up 1000 words of character thoughts, feelings, development, etc I will lose interest asap if my replies in return are all 50 words of 'he stared into her eyes and said etc'.
But I love fights. xD Ordinary people going up against impossible odds to save themselves/someone important to them. Failure is just as if not more inspiring than defeat, because it will affect my characters more than just 'she hated him cause he killed her brother'.
Keijukainen - October 5, 2008 08:47 AM (GMT)
Tension and conflict, especially in subtle forms, is the best. Action and drama make for lively posts and threads, while fluff and happiness can lead to interesting things too. But for me, it's all about putting my characters into hard situations - even if they're not directly impacted - and seeing how they do. Often times they decide for themselves how they react, which makes it all even more fun. Romance... not so much. I prefer to stay away from that more than anything, but that's more my personal preference against having things end up as nothing more than" my character wants to jump your character's bones!!11!!1"
On a broader scale, as long as a plot makes sense and/or has the potential to actually go somewhere, I'm willing to give it a shot. Even if it does have fluff, talk, and the like involved. The trick is getting people to plot such things and then follow through.
When it comes down to it, though... conflict in its many forms is a win!
Edited because I can't spell, apparently.
Morcalivan - October 5, 2008 10:16 AM (GMT)
Conflict and action all the way. Perhaps it shows a lot of latent anger, but I love characters with short tempers and I love having them facing off against others. The win or lose is not so important, but the thrill of the fight gets our blood pumping. No wonder Fight Club is my all time favorite movie, eh? XD
Of course, I do have my fluffy side who likes watching romances unfold. Especially if they are the awkward kind.
Jackal - October 9, 2008 12:16 AM (GMT)
I chose much talk, much action, and conflict! Totally fun. xD
elphie49 - October 9, 2008 03:49 AM (GMT)
Angst, drama, conflict, and fluff!
Fluff FTW.
Atricea - October 9, 2008 07:28 AM (GMT)
My own answers were these;
Little Talk - because I easily get bored with too much talk, where nothing really happens... a little talk is fine, but much of it bores me...
Much Action - I love action! Stuff needs to happen!
Conflict - and this is what makes the best threads, conflict! If it's all fluff and happiness... well it can be nice to some degree, but really, conflict is much better. I love fights or arguements, I love my characters not being too happy constantly because that would bore me.
Romance - a little bit of this is needed, I am a girl... and I am a romantic dreamer. But you can have all of the above and romance too...
Cruelty - because I like badguys and villains, I like being mean... either to my own characters, or to others. I like to be the badguy myself, it's so much more fun than being sort-of heroic (I rarely root for the hero in a movie, I prefer the villain)...
Mousie - October 9, 2008 07:44 AM (GMT)
Ooooh, awkward moments was a good one. I love those too. Anything that makes your character have to stop and think is good, that 'hang on! How can I deal with this?' factor keeps it interesting.
Panda - October 9, 2008 05:59 PM (GMT)
Little talk, much action and everything else rammed in, kthxbai.
The more loaded a post is the more I enjoy it and the more *I* get to mix it up.
