| Senator Ted Woolsey was a sad sort of person in a way. Oh, he was quite the jolly older guy but sometimes he felt like he had wasted away at least part of his life. The part that would have given him a wife and children of his own. Ted was a family guy without a family and it was a really sad position for anyone to be in. Sometimes he could forget about it when at other times it seemed to shoot straight to the forefront of his mind. Especially when he was sitting at home alone with just Ulysses. Yeah, the dog loved him but the dog was just that. A dog. And Ted couldn't deny that wasn't getting any younger Even if he had kids right now he'd still be sixty years old when they graduated from high school. He was already twice as old as his parents had been when they had had him and even though people all around were having kids later and later in life these days he almost felt it would be unfair to force a kid to grow up with a parent that old. A parent that could have a heart attack in the stands while watching a football game and have it written off by the coroner as 'old age.' So it was moments like this that he really treasured. His sister and had had four children; two for each marriage. While the other two were grown now and running about the city on their own, the younger two were just seven and eight and needed supervision. Quite a bit of supervision, it seemed. The two boys ran Rachel and Nate ragged which he supposed should be expected from young boys. And he supposed they were more prone to being easily tired out. Nate was a big time cardiac surgeon and his sister was some big time lawyer. They had pretty strenuous schedules as it was. Throw in play dates and karate lessons and piano lessons and things got pretty hectic. BUT WAIT! It was Super Ted to the rescue! Yes, Uncle Ted could be called on at any time to pull them out of a time pinch. Josh and Max were always on their best behavior with Ted and he didn't care when they weren't. He just loved spending time with them. It made that whole lonely side of him seem a little less important if just for a little while. One of the things that he liked, too, was that Josh and Max were into comic books. As a kid Ted had kept up with way more of them than he probably should have. It had always been a sort of secret; no one would have likely respected him if they knew he had issues of Iron Man and the Justice League under his mattress where other boys his age had Playboys and Maxim shoots. I mean, everyone knew that he was something of a nerd and a geek but at least he wasn't that bad. The comics would probably have pushed him over the fine line between quirky and nerdy. So he used the kids as a cover. Yes, he had gotten them into comic books and, yes, he came with them every few weeks to pick up current issues. It was a front, you see. A way for him to keep up with his favorite series without some reporter or some kid snapping a photo of him geeking out with Petey. Oh, yes. Peter. Good kid if just a bit odd. Josh and Max were plenty content to sit around reading comics that they had just bought or were considering buying while their uncle chatted away about what they assumed was just boring political stuff when it was really all about the latest mishaps in the Marvel universe. Hey, Ted go this kicks where he could. Ted pulled his car up into a parking space in front of the comic shop and Josh and Max jumped out immediately. He locked up the car and followed them in, the door jingling as he entered. The kids knew where they were going so he let them go, watching Maxwell make a beeline for the newest Spider-Man while Joshua went for the DC wall. Oh, those kids were going to have some fights in the future. He, instead, walked over towards the counter. "Petey!" he said in a very enthusiasitc greeting. "My dear comic loving friend. How's business?" Then, in a sort of shared joke he whispered, "Any recommendations this month?" He laughed. "You know, I always feel like Nick Fury or something sneaking around like this." |
