Manga Title: Mars Manga Artist: Fuyumi Soryo Manga Writer: Fuyumi Soryo Genre: Romance Status: Complete - 15 volumes and 1 stand alone. Rating: Teen - Ages 13+ Stars: ***** Review: This manga is my ultimate favourite, it has everything you could possibly want and more in a good series. Firstly, the series itself isn't very long. Unlike Naruto or Fruits Baskets which both seem to go on for epic proportions, Mars wraps itself up quite nicely in fifteen volumes. Fifteen may seem like a bit much on your wallet but you'll be pleased to know not one volume is simply full of filler material and the stand alone volume is just added background material. Which is always welcome to those who are hardcore fans, such as myself.
Aesthetically Mars is to die for. Fuyumi Soryo is one of my favourite artists because her style is unique and has an almost realistic touch to it but still manages to stay in the realm of anime. Sometimes in manga, the artist does make an error in perspective or background but I've yet to find a flaw in her work. Each panel is impeccable for her art has so much detail and yet it looks so effortless and simple. She always manages to convey the emotions the characters are feeling and it practically feels like you're right there with the characters instead of just reading it.
Needless to say, if her art doesn't sway you the plot definitely will. Mars is a classic shojo manga; it even describes itself as being a tale of two star-crossed lovers. The main characters are Rei Kashino and Kira Aso. There are a few supporting characters as well but not an enormous amount that'll make you confused as to who they are if they show up a few volumes later on. The plot is quite simple but filled with a few twists and classic high school drama. Without giving away too much all you really need to know is that Kira is the stereotypical art student who's quiet and shy while Rei is the opposite, being a bit of a bad boy. For some reason they just seem to be naturally drawn together. It seems simple but a good plot in my opinion is simple enough that it won't get lost within the drama that may overlap it. (And trust me there's enough in this story to keep you hooked!) Overall: Mars is the complete package deal! Eye-catching art, an in-depth and well thought out plot with believable character it's definitely a series that's worth reading. The only bone you might have to pick with it is that it's finished! But fear not, Fuyumi Soryo is still producing manga and I can't wait to see what she has for us in the future. Other: Mars does have a television drama called Zhanshen MARS. Unfortunately I've yet to watch it, however I'd bet it's just as amazing as the manga! :) |
