Title: It's C-a-n-o-n
EmmiJade - September 7, 2008 02:28 AM (GMT)
Not cannon. A cannon is a weapon. The established 'canon' of a story is what officially exists within a storyline. That is why it is impossible for any site based on a television show to have 'canons' that the site has made up.
So, in summary:
1. A cannon is a weapon, not a character on in your roleplay.
2. Your pre-made characters are not canons, damnit!
/endrant

Both things that annoy me greatly. Spell it correctly and just call it a pre-made character, because it has nothing to do with actual canon.
Now, if you want to differentiate game canon from actual canon, that'd be a bit different.
Greymalkin - September 7, 2008 02:46 AM (GMT)
Ah, another for the bench!
I'm seriously thinking of getting a whacking big .gif of the business end of a cannon and posting it to the thread of anyone who makes the canon/cannon mistake.
EmmiJade - September 7, 2008 02:54 AM (GMT)
That's a good way to put it, Ryl. If people would differentiate between game canon and franchise canon, then it would be a lot more tolerable.
And lol, Greymalkin.

Choose a cannon.
MY CANNON LIST--very powerful
--a little nervous around fire

--brave to the point of obnoxious
--has a lot of balls

--old fashioned
--not very powerful physically

I find this to be a rather small thing to allow annoy you to such a great degree. I know it's not a hard word to type out but an extra n really does seem to be an itty bitty mistake.
rancidxdreaming - September 7, 2008 03:26 AM (GMT)
Hey, little things annoy people. It's called a "pet peeve". They happen.
Cannon is a VERY different word than canon, and if it's in 'official' documentation on a site, the person who wrote it up should be alerted. Just a "Hey, you got this wrong" or something.
Smaller things irritate me on a daily basis, but that's just how I am.
EmmiJade - September 7, 2008 03:26 AM (GMT)
-shrugs- Mispelling bothers me. There's a reason I run mostly advanced sites. I'm sure there are others that agree with me. If you don't, that's okay too. But allow me my irritation, yeah? -is a self-admitted grammar and spelling nazi-
EDIT: Rancidface, ILU. <3

This would be why I didn't use terms like 'silly' or 'irrelevant' when expressing my opinion on the matter. I'm a pretty go-with-the-flow kind of person. Things only bother me if I let them.
I can understand why some people let some things bother them. As human beings, we actually seem to like to be angry at things. If someone just read this article that really angered them and told you about it, you'll probably want to read it if for no other reason than you can be angry at them to. I'm pretty guilty of that myself...and what's worse is I recognize it and do it anyways.
Just expressing an opinion. I don't think it's stupid to let such a thing annoy you and I did not intend to imply that I did. If that is what it came off as, my apologies.

Which one is the printer and which one is the camera? :p
Kesra - September 7, 2008 04:02 AM (GMT)
...
I think Cannon is the camera.

Sure. Wow, RPG-D has my life all planned out. I'm about to go run away to Utah with about four other members and the republican VP candidate, so why not dole out some children while I'm at it?
EmmiJade - September 7, 2008 04:08 AM (GMT)
Oh, those are my friends you're running away with. -jumps on bandwagon with Sades and company-
Anyway. Canons vs. Premades. Not the same thing. At all.
-attempts on-topicness-

Hey! I had claims to Emmi first. She is my second wife. Get in line.
Also... once again, my love for you knows no bounds. I have messaged so many admins on it (and yes, they did it on my former site too). I wish I could show them a true cannon. >.>

December....I LOVE your pics and captions. [laughs]
This is one of my pet peeves as well. And coming from a Pirates of the Caribbean universe....the misuse of the word takes on a whole new meaning when used in forums of that genre.
But the only good thing about the misuse is: it's generally an easy way to tell a quality PotC board (where the admin knows their cannons from their canons) and those created, run and populated by 13 year old fangurlz of Jack Sparrow.
Greymalkin - September 10, 2008 05:30 AM (GMT)
Got your cannon ...

... right here.
Novelist - September 10, 2008 06:08 AM (GMT)
Sorry, EmmiJade, but I've got to completely disagree half the time.
Canons are any character that is drawn from an established universe, specifically one shared by the gameworld being used. Does the name show up in a Google search? Is the character it finds the same one as the premade character? Is the universe this googled character inhabits the same one as the RPG uses? Then it's a canon.
Premade characters are not necessarily drawn from an established universe but they may have major roles in the gameworld of the RPG. I don't care if your board is based on an original story or not, if the character doesn't exist anywhere else, it isn't a canon. It's a premade character. It might have some roles, but it's a premade character.
Around half the time, people use 'Canon' to describe any premade character, whether it's actually part of a 'canon' or not. For fork's sake, if the board is original, ther IS NO CANON. A canon is something that players can refer to, that has things written based on it. Neon Genesis has a canon. World of Darkness has an excessive canon.
Original boards have no canon. Even if they have cannons.

Does this badass sum up your feelings on the matter?

I r confused by these 2 statements. Pretty much that's what Emmi was saying.
If your board isn't based on a fandom (for lack of a better term) whether it is a video game like Final Fantasy, Book like Lord of the Rings, TV show like Gossip Girl, comic-book like X-men or movie such as Pirates of the Carribean, then it does not have a canon.
They use the terms when bridging books to tv shows and movies all the time. They say "What from canon are we keeping in our story?" That's why books differ from their movie and tv show counterparts. Canon characters also get called established characters. There is a difference. I just think people are too lazy and want to use a familiar word.

I've actually seen people who've spelled it wrong consistently go ape at someone who suggests it's the incorrect spelling, and it's been at sites who called themselves "advanced" and listed all sorts of rules against bad spelling. If not for the people it bugs to see it misspelled, at the very least it makes your site look bad to have it spelled wrong a lot and yet have rules against bad spelling for everyone else.

December, your canon post killed me. XD you dear win. And yes, spelling it cannon bothers me so incredibly much. And when i correct people, they tell me i'm wrong. it's a big -.-.
