Title: I Know This Has Been Done A Million And Five Times
A_Pickle - August 30, 2008 04:14 AM (GMT)
But why is everyone in love with twilight? Am I the only one who hates it?
FIRST OF ALL...all the characters are perfect. Even their "flaws" are too perfect. Mary sues and Gary stus UGH!
First of al, does this woman even know anything about Vampires? I'll admit I'm not expert but I think I know a thing or two about them. Yes, they're supposed to be good looking and all but how does Edward not have any flaws except being REALLY annoying? Even Lestat had his flaws. And this book was supposed to follow in Anne Rice's footsteps or something?
Bella. Where do I start? So she's not supposed to be that good looking but every guy is madly in love with her? All the girls are jealous of her. The most hard-to-get guy who likes no girls falls madly in love with this irritating female. When she becomes a vampire she's the most perfect newborn ever. She single handedly managed to save her side of the "vampire-war" thing with the Volturi. How does anyone stand this? It makes me want to vomit.
Next, this is so wrong! I believe this is just telling every girl that she's going to find her Mr. Perfect and that Mr. Perfect will be ridiculously good looking and will be the best boyfriend ever. WRONG. I'm sorry but not everyone has a happily ever after and most guys are the complete opposite of Edward and Jacob thank goodness. There is too much lovey smut and the action sucks as well. I just don't see how anyone can stand this book.

i'm with you 100000% on this.

nadja - August 30, 2008 04:35 AM (GMT)
lol i'll admit that i want to see the move but the books don't interest me in the least. i mean, they had the vamp out in daylight in the previews! i'm not going to waste time reading something like that...
i dunno, i wasn't even really interested in that stuff until EVERYONE kept talking it up so much that i wanted to see what all of the hype was.
MelioraAdmin - August 30, 2008 04:48 AM (GMT)
I've never read the Twilight books. I've never really felt the urge to read them. However, I am interested in finding out what's so freakin' great about this story. XD So, I'll probably see the movie. If I'm impressed, which I doubt I will be, I'll consider reading the books when I'm not swamped with AP British Literature assignments.
It seems to me that this is the Eragon syndrome. Fairly entertaining books that aren't at all unique or particularly well written. Do I hate these books? No, but I fully acknowledge that they aren't groundbreaking. . . just like the movies that are often made about them. *sighs*
rosalieart - August 30, 2008 04:50 AM (GMT)
eragon was a pretty good book, imo, but the movie brutally murdered it. twilight is far far farfarfarfar worse. if i were you i'd rename it the hp syndrome
MelioraAdmin - August 30, 2008 04:53 AM (GMT)
^Yep, that's another one. Harry Potter. . . great until you discover real literature. I liked those books when I was nine. . . then I got a brain.
forbidden x - August 30, 2008 04:57 AM (GMT)
I've read the books, but I don't take them seriously - they're nowhere near what anyone could call great works of literature, and are a lot more enjoyable if you read them solely for entertainment. Then you can make fun of them and it's just a lot better haha.
And another thing - vampires? They. are. not. real. I've seen a few threads, as well as heard other people say "oh, vampires aren't supposed to be that way!" But the thing is, they're not supposed to be ANY way because they're not real! People can interpret them however they want to because they are mythological beings, so who cares if someone makes up an entirely new species?! It's fiction!!
That's not a personal attack haha, it just irks me when people think they know everything about a subject that has no basis in reality xD
I will admit that the sparkling is ridiculous, though.
It makes them seem more like fairies...
The Breed - August 30, 2008 08:38 AM (GMT)
I seriously, seriously, SERIOUSLY dislike Twilight.
I don't know why. I think it's because I'm a writer myself and I see the vampire genre being totally butchered >.> (NOT AN ATTACK, A BLUNT OPINION)
But I mean, I respect it if you like Twilight! Because I don't like Harry Potter either, but I'm not going to rant, rave and rabble you if you do. I don't like her style of writing, too plain.
ANYWAY.
Vampires are mythical/fiction! Forbidden's got a point, because they are so loosely designed that you can interpret them any way you like! Look at Underworld, *coughs*.
We can trace them right back to Vlad Teppish, the man who butchered people and stuck their heads on wooden stakes around his castle. HE was the original Vampire, and where Bram Stoker got his original idea of the concept of Dracula from. Dracula is where most people identify the idea of the vampire, and it can probably be traced back further if I could really be bothered enough to look it up.
....Anne Rice. Anyone who reads Twilight needs to read Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, and see that the parallels between the romance/sappy/fluffy stuff is the same except its a male/male pairing.
But I say this, and it would most likely be the same thing if a book about werewolves took off. "That's how they're supposed to be!" ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
And don't even start with the witches/wizards stuff for HP. But here's a fun fact that I find to be the funniest way in ending Harry Potter.

TurkFox - August 30, 2008 10:01 AM (GMT)
I've not even read it and I'm sick of it. I know a lot of teenagers through cosplay (mainly at the picnics - there are a lot of 14 - 17-year-olds) and most of them seem to be into it. I feel like bringing them a proper book at the next picnic. I'll take "Trainspotting" or the Discworld books or something...
My best friend is dying to see the film but I don't think she's even read the books - she's just in love with Robert Pattinson (we've met him a couple of times and she cosplays as Cedric Diggory so it's even more so). I'm not going to see it.
On the HP subject - I view that the same way as I do The Jeremy Kyle Show. It's trash but I love it. xDD I actually love the HP movies better than the books because they cut out all the useless waffle that made the books so ridiculously long and got to the point. And of course, Matt Lewis who plays Neville is smexy and such a nice guy and doesn't laugh at me too much when I talk rubbish... </off topic>
So yeah... the craze will pass, hopefully, when the Twilight fans grow up and read decent books.
Oh, and this turned up on fandomwank - have a laugh at the video and then even more of a laugh at everyone telling her they hate her:

OH THANK GOD <3
I've been reading the first 3 and being quite impressed i will admit. I thought it was cute, but obviously not at all unbeleiveable. Edward pissed me off, and like you said, Bella. They are both so frikken perfect if drove me mad.
The only one i liked was Angela <3 Bless her, she needs to be mentioned more haha.
Oh, and their child is also prefect. She is human and graced with awesome looks, powers, and will never die. Nice.
I think they where nice, but the last one ruind it sooo badly, i wanted to throw it out of the window. If you ask me, she made that ending to try make us all hapy. I would have liked a depressing ending quite honestly haha

Brandon - August 30, 2008 01:04 PM (GMT)
My opinion on this is... they're books. Nobody is claiming this is a great piece of literature. If you are, then yes--you totally need to get your brain examined. What this book, along with things like Harry Potter and Eragon, are getting teenagers into reading. Speaking as a 17 year old, who spends most of his time in his school's library with his book-loving friends... way too few people read anymore. They can't spell, write, can barely read aloud... it's obviously a problem.
But then Stephanie Meyer comes along and writes a book. Sure, it's a book about perfect people finding the perfect romance, but is that so wrong?
I've read the books, at the insistence of my friends, and I liked them for what they were... vampire fiction. No, they're not amazing, and they're definitely not the books ever written, but if you want to think so, screaming teenage girl, then by all means feel free.
Maybe it'll inspire some people to write, and we'll see people improving their reading, writing, and spelling abilities tenfold.
I can't think of a clever way to end this post, so I'll leave it at that.
Keeper of Secrets - August 30, 2008 03:20 PM (GMT)
I admit to having not read the books, and I do not ever plan to. I like fantasy, but I don't enjoy reading about vampires. The most I've ever enjoyed them has been watching the TV shows Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I think a lot of my dislike also comes from seeing them played so horribly wrong back in the "good" days of Yahoo chat. It's because of that that I do not allow vampires in my fantasy games- mainly because the plot -never- allows for them, but also because I just...strongly dislike them.
I have a co-mod on one of my boards who says she hates the Twilight books. And yet she'll still obsess with them. About the movie, about Stephanie Myer, about anything having to do with it.
It drives me absolutely crazy. No one wants to deal with it when she comes into our chat room because we know she's just going to end up posting pointless Twilight related pictures, or talk about some wank on fandomwank having to do with Twilight, or God knows what else.
It is one of the biggest contradictions I've ever seen. She claims to hate the books yet she obsesses about it. It makes no sense.
And she's writing a vampire novel, so she pretty much thinks it's going to be so much better than anything in Twilight and that it'll be publishable. And I'm not saying it's not, but I will never truly know because I will never read it. Mainly because I have such a strong hatred for vampires in general and I'm not interested in reading it, but also because of the way she brags about certain things as she writes it.
Her obsession and constant talk about Twilight has made me hate it and want nothing to do with it.
So no, to the original poster, you are definitely not the only one who hates it.

I loathe Eragon D:< Of course, everything's a matter of taste, but I could go on a rant longer than any Twilight-hater's wet dream about that plagiarized, hack piece of crap. And I will!
I know everyone is entitled to their opinion. If you like it, great. But the fact that he wrote a story with a premise stolen from Anne McCaffrey's Dragon Riders of Pern, a plot parallel to George Lucas' Star Wars and names pilfered from Tolkien does not make him a good writer, regardless of how young he was when he wrote it.
His parents started their own bloody publishing company to publish the work for him so he could troll it door to door until someone associated with Knopf recommended him. His mother was his editor.
He compared himself to Tolkien in an interview. TOLKIEN!?!! I want to dangle this idiot out a window by his ankle. Nearly half the names of cities and people in that book are names taken straight from Tolkien's work and modified with an extra letter or a switching of two vowels. Tolkien is probably clawing his way out of his grave.
Well, needless to say, I was a little less impressed by his youth when I found out the history behind those books and the content. At least Meyer published honestly and gained success through her story, NOT through eager marketting and false claims of 'I'm a child prodigy!' Paolini's fame was spawned of good marketting and an audience that doesn't know any better: kids who haven't read the classics, which the very foundations of fantasy and science fiction ride upon.
Yes, Twilight has some unbelievable characters and vampires that sparkle in the sun, but at least Meyer was original in her endeavour. At least she didn't rip off Anne Rice and Laurell K. Hamilton for a glimpse of fame. She wrote the book because she had an idea and she liked it. By some miracle, her agent and her publishers were willing to overlook the glaring flaws and publish it. I'm glad her vampires sparkle! Even if it seems absolutely moronic, at least it's original. I enjoyed those books for their entertainment value, but I cannot fathom anyone with any knowledge of or respect for Tolkien, McCaffrey or Lucas' work enjoying Eragon.
If I'm going to take my pick between fanfiction and badly written plagiarism, I'll take the fanfic.
((I know this is a Twilight-Hate thread, but I'm quite tired of Twilight-haters because they all ramble on about the same things... So I added Eragon hate for a nice twist to the 'let's burn popular books' bandwagon))
Satire.and.Ice - August 30, 2008 04:41 PM (GMT)
I'm a new Twilight fan, but I do have to admit that the Mary Sueness of the whole thing is rather sickening. But it's a good book, if you look beyond all of that. No, it's not my favorite, but I like the series and the plot and stuff.
And I thought vampires couldn't get pregnant....

First off, I love you for the sweet "Trainspotting" cameo in your post.
I've read the details summary of the last one [I had a basic knowledge of the first book thanks to the sophomore that sat next to me while I was a junior..I'm old] and I was rathr GROSSED OUT. She cried because he didn't want to have sex? Oh yes, because that's a good example to show your target readers.
I can't say anything about getting married young, for I will be too but I can say that it's rare and I would never suggest the same thing to younger girls or my peers. But hey, whatever. It's nothing more but a fairy tale, after all.
missmossxx - August 30, 2008 05:33 PM (GMT)
I like it, but I can see all the flaws and stuff too.. I mostly just like the pace, it's super easy to read, and it's entertaining.
However, I do not like all the hostility that seems to be caused by it. :/
I'm a wolf fan, I always have preferred werewolves to vampires, and even if the Quiletes are shapeshifters and not werewolves, I kind of prefer shapeshifters too, anyway. Ditto was alwaus my favourite Pokemon, well, Ditto and Ninetails, but since Ditto could become Ninetails, we'll stick with that.
Back on topic, whenever I seem to mention being a Jake fan, I have at least like, three fifths of the people I'm talking to start insulting him, and having a look of disgust on their face. I don't get it. Perfectly lovely people seem to warp at the name of the character they do not like. I never insulted Edward. :/
I'm not saying that I mind people disliking characters, but why do people have to be so mean about it? They act as if I'm some sort of idiot for being a fan. o.O
I've rambled a bit now. Meh. Oh well.
It kind of annoys me that everyone goes on and on about it too, although that's what made me read it in the first place, because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Now I just kind of get annoyed whenever I scroll down a page and see a 'Bella loves Edward' banner, or whatever. Not really annoyed, but just, ahdunno.. A brief moment of annoyance leading back into indifference. xD
Ahdunno, I'm making no sense.
Basically, I like the book, but I don't like all the hype and stuff.
Cal - August 30, 2008 05:54 PM (GMT)
I find the subject matter disgusting and foul. Twilight teaches young girls that mentally and physically abusive relationships are worth striving for, that attempted rape is totally okay if the guy really, really likes you, that pedophilia is completely fine because it will be true love eventually, and a woman's only purpose is to have a baby, especially if she dies in childbirth.

I've never read the book, but from all I've heard, that sums it up... and still everyone loves it!
As I just said, I haven't read the book. I probabl ywill eventually, just so I can form an actually concrete opinion. People are really annoying over it, though, and from what I've heard, many of the concepts are silly, the characters (which are soooo important to me IMHO that I don't think I could really get into it!) are poorly developed and Sue-ish. When people try to defend the book, it makes it seem worse in my mind (their defense usually isn't very good ^^).
Just.. no. People should step back and take a breather from it. When people are making emotional videos crying that its "ovvvver", thats when it becomes ridiculous. I've been upset at books being over, but they were excellent, excellent books. Not.. Twilight.
EmmiJade - August 31, 2008 04:43 AM (GMT)
I could write novels on just the idiocy in the preface and first chapter of Twilight. I'm not even going to go into the editing screwups, the bitchyness of Bella Swan, or the mind-boggling use of the word 'I' or the repetition of her name.
But the thing that bothers me the MOST about Twilight? Edward Cullen is a freaking emotionally abusive pedophiliac stalker. Seriously, if a guy were treating ME like that, I'd be freaked out. This book gives girls not only an unrealistic portrayal of relationships, but encourages them to be wilting "lambs" who let their men control their every move.
I hate Edward Cullen. So much. Besides being a Gary Stu, he promotes despicable treatment of women.

Um, can I just say I agree one hundred and ten percent?
I read the books because I had a friend harp on me about them all summer and, hello, I don't have school so I need some sort of book to fill my time with. I read the first one and waffled between hating it and almost moderately being entertained. I'm not going to say I ever -liked- them, because I don't think I did (I still can't decide) but hey, most of my summer reads end up being hits or misses, so whatever.
I never really liked Bella because I can't stand whiners or people who don;t understand that you can have a social life and a romantic life AT THE SAME TIME. Like, at all. I never really liked Edward because all he does is get pie-faced over Bella who, like I mentioned earlier, I don't like. But I really, really liked Jake. Because, out of everyone in the books, he's one of the few people with flaws (which I think includes falling for Bella, but whatever) and, really, I've always thought werewolves are way cooler than vampires, especially in this book.
So it really irritates me that all they get all this crap both in the book and from all these rabid Edward/Bella fans. But okay, again, whatever, people are allowed to have an opinion.
So I casually mention to the friend who introduced me to the books that Jacob is really the only reason I read past book one at all, and she then trys to convince me why it is horribly backward to think that he's better than Edward as a character. 0.o And I'm like "So I'm not allowed to think that a guy who lets girls make their own decisions is nicer than a guy who forces all his choices on a girl and basically beats her into the ground emotionally just because the second guy is her "twu wuv"?" which then wouldn't even bother me so much except that it's an opinion. In this instance, it's not like there is any right or wrong answer, for crying out loud.
It also bothers me a little that the werewolves are considered to be beasts whereas the vampires who, by the way, DRINK BLOOD are perfectly civilized. That's an antirely different issue though that could leave me rambling for awhile. : )
Safe to say, in my rambly, sleepy way, that I agree with a lot of what you guys have said.
Lady Hikari - August 31, 2008 02:55 PM (GMT)
:D WELCOME FRIEND! HAVE MY CHILDRENS!
I ranted about the vampire thing weeks ago and people said the same crap that they are mythological creatures. Meh. Sure. Maybe. Of course, there are real vampires out there even if they aren't undead. << Who's keeping tabs?!
The only humanoids that should sparkle are gay men. I've said this a million times. A MILLION! It's horrible.
And ug. I agree with the whole Mary Sue/Gary Stu crap. It's soooooooo true. Also, it's really annoying.
I enjoyed the HP books up until three and then I really loved five. But that is when Harry became all angsty. That is why I watch Potter Puppet Pals. They amuse me.
"Snape. Snape. Severus Snape. DUMBLEDORE!"
*cough*
But yes. I hate Twilight. Horrible ass books.
Noodles - September 1, 2008 12:58 PM (GMT)
Well if we aren't careful kids will go from "I'm scared of vampires, they drink blood and kill you and stuff. Don't make me go to bed." to "I like vampires. They sparkle in the sunshine and they fall in love with you and sometimes when you're lucky they crap out rainbows." Okay, kids won't start talking about crapping out rainbows, but it could happen!
My sister, my cousins, their friends and their friend's friends and more like Twilight. I do not know why. I asked my sister and she just said because. She didn't have an actual reason. I asked if it was because the vampires sparkled, which is one of the only things I actually know about the book, and she looked at me funny. I asked her when she finished the last book if the author had killed everyone off at the end in a huge nuclear explosion, because hey, if she can make vampires sparkle and fall in love with complete b*tches of little girls then she can blow them all up, too. If anything I say is inaccurate in some way shape or form, don't tell me. I've never read anything related to Twilight besides the rants. I've never even read that little blurb on the inside jacket telling you what the story is all about. They all want to go see the Twilight movie, too, because it's Twilight and they think the guy playing Edward is good looking. He's ugly as hell, sorry. Snap out of it, people. Look elsewhere, the guy is not good looking. And the actress playing Bella, I have seen the previews for it half a dozen times due to my sister, she annoys me too. But this isn't about the movies it's supposed to be about the books.
Well, I know nothing about the books. They still frustrate me. I liked Harry Potter and Eragon and all those for what they were worth, and I got sort of tired of HP after book 5 because of the freaking long wait for the next one. Eragon I like those, I've always meant to read Lord of the Rings but I'll pick up the books and go 'Woah these look ridiculously long.' I read the Chronicles of Narnia, those were alright but I never finished them. Halfway through book 7 and I just quit. I got bored, and I felt like it was getting repetitive. Never finished His Dark Materials, either, for whatever reason. Same case as Narnia. Got halfway through the final book, but couldn't finish. I told my sister there were loads of books better than Twilight, and she say 'Don't say Harry Potter'. I said I wouldn't, though she never let me go on about my list. I haven't read many, if any classics. My favorite series is 'The Bartimaeus Trilogy' by Johnathan Stroud, which I think is leagues better than Twilight and I haven't even read that yet.
But whatever. People can rant about how awesome Twilight is and in a hundred years when everyone's vampires sparkle, someone will try and bring back blood sucking killer vampires that don't fall in love with the main b*tchy character of the story, they just kill her right off the bat because the story is about THEM. Those are the stories I like, thank you. I prefer my vampires as blood-sucking killers. Not sparkling nitwits who romance little girls and have perfect children.
*Everything in this post regarding the Twilight series is most likely completely inaccurate factually. I've never read the books, and never will. Bwahahaha.
