Title: Modern, Fantasy, Sci-fi -- Something Unique.

Jackal - August 29, 2008 12:28 AM (GMT)
Genre: Any, original.
Difficulty: Intermediate to advanced.
Type(s) of Creature(s): Human/humanoid.
Preferred Rating: PG13+
Preferred Number of Members/Activity: Not new.
Preferred Time where RPG is set in: Modern or futuristic.

Other Notes:

Before you reply -- just a couple of things.

First off, I don't know if I'll have time to roleplay at the moment. Classes just started this past week, there's NaNoWriMo in November, and I'll be gone for a large part of December and possibly January as well. I would, however, like to take a look around me for potential games -- roleplays that I might be interested in joining in the future.

The most important points:
  • A setting with more-or-less modern technology, or anything more futuristic. (The exception is steampunk, which is kind of tech-y in an odd sort of way without being modern. (Or maybe not. My brain has kind of crumbled and died. Or died and then crumbled.))
  • PBs not required, but conformed; that is, either of real people or art, but not both. I would still prefer this because I don't like to not see anything (if that makes sense), but I just remembered that I can disable avatars and signatures if it's an IF board. I don't know about other types of forums, though.
  • A good, solid OOC community that is willing to help integrate new people. ;)
  • Memorable, lovable characters and friendly players.
  • To clarify on the above, I hate it when I write up a character and then can't find a place to join in, and no one will help. Offer to thread or something! Good god, it's not that hard. When I join an RPG where the players always post with the same people and ignore everyone else, I never end up posting.
  • The majority of your board should not be this size.
Some things to note, and some that I would prefer:
  • My posts range, on average, from 150 to 400 words. Yes, I can write more. I prefer not to. I'm a slow writer, and I don't like to spend hours on a single post.
  • I like original RPGs. Fandom-based forums...are not really my thing. You are, however, free to offer, and I'll still take a look.
  • I don't care if you use APC or APP.
  • I do prefer third person POV, past tense. Present tense is all right, but I will not write in first person.
  • I love biopunk. I love dystopias. I love conflict.
  • I do also like urban fantasy, cyberpunk, and any dark/gritty sort of atmosphere.
  • I like to push my characters to their limits. Yes, I want them to hurt, and I want them to grow and change...or not change, and be worse off for it.
  • I am not really interested in regular human life RPGs.
  • Schools and all that...I don't know. I'm not really into them, but if I like the characters and I like the posts, then I might go for it.
  • Freeform is all right. I like games with a very solid plot, one that kind of drags all the characters in. I know a lot of people don't like that, but I figured I'd just put this out here.
  • I like to talk. I will bug you all until I get your IM names and I will never let you go. :|
  • In fact, my AIM name is KINFTW, and you're all free to message me just to talk. :D However, please note that I don't enjoy being pressured to join a game.
That's pretty much it. Not really a couple of things, in retrospect, but, um. Yeah. Post away!

Hi there! Now, I don't know that we're exactly what you're looking for but perhaps you can take a look anyways. Fairytale Nightmares is set in the future of the world, 2118, but with a Victorian twist. So I don't quite know if that would be considered steampunk or anything else, because I have no clue what it means! XD

We have a variety of interesting and dramatic characters, all of whom have friendly and open-minded RPers. We're not remotely cliquey and the admin is friendly and answers all the questions you could ever think of.

There's conflict a plenty, though as the board is new it's a bit slow to build up, but the RP is what you make it and you want dystopia? You go for it. We don't mind you pushing your characters at all and we encourage dark/gritty storylines and unfortunate characters.

Now, if this does happen to sound just the teensiest bit appealing, I'll post my ad...

"I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones."
~ Albert Einstein

The year is 2118. It is four years after the Great World War.

The Earth has come under the rule of the self-proclaimed Emperor, Emmanuel Roth. In his plot to rebuild the Earth from the ruins, he has colonised the planet and runs the world from his base in the Aerium, Brandenburg, Germany.

Roth’s theory is that the foundations of a strong society in the future come from the past. It is for this reason that Roth has returned the world to the years of the Victorians; his native Britain’s glory days. But with the good – technology, employment, architecture – comes the bad – murder, poverty, illness and death.

Life and death can be a snap decision, like the flip of a coin. Will you survive to see the Earth restored to its former glory?

Fairytale Nightmares

Suppose I'll toss us out there then. I thoroughly scanned your post and there's only two things that might turn you away but I suppose it depends on just how you are about it. Firstly, we accept both real-life and cartoony pics. Nothing anime-styled but more so drawing- simply because some members couldn't find a PB that really just stuck to their character ( I had one like that for a while. ) The second is that we're not exactly steampunk but we are sci-fi fantasy- just not dark and twisted persay. However, everything else, including the friendly members and love to chat bit, is all us!

We've got 5 different races to chose from, albeit 3 are various forms of human, other than the human race itself. There's also dragons~ It's a very odd yet intriguing, all original story. If you'd ever like to talk about it, feel free to stop by in our cbox. We usually have at least 1 - 5 people there. =)

The world is caught in a vicious cycle, and left to
the new generation are the sins of the past.
Out of greed and sloth, a new enemy was born.
The dragons rose from beneath the earth, woken
to find their own murdered for reasons unknown.
Their wrath destroyed the world, leaving humanity
with only one hope for salvation.

Considering themselves the new master race, Psionics
took their proper place as the reluctant protectors of humanity.
Equally powerful, the dragons and Psionics fought for years.
Each coming to a standstill, neither gaining any ground.
Using forgotten labs, experiments were created, designed
to take over the fight.

While the children of humanity were being born as second class citizens,
treated as little more than slaves to the people who saved them,
a small group fought for freedom. With too many failed attempts
and spies in their midst, their only prayer is to find allies among Dragons,
the Suwani people and their clever nésemóono.
Allies that could potentially change everyone's fate.

It is a weak world in a flux of change.

Just remember,

No one is safe - everyone is at risk.

Well, that was a great post to read because of your specifics. :) I don't know if HTM would quite fit what you're looking for since we are technically based off of a fandom -- the Anita Blake series of books -- although what we are is the series' world concept without canon characters or locations. In terms of community and forum setup, we're there. In fact, we're dyng for more players who are really interested in working on their characters. The more, the merrier!

In terms of characters, everything you stated a preference for is one which my co-mod and I share. We've about character development first and foremost, and every player is encouraged to have their character grow during RP. We love character-specific miniature storylines in particular.

If we're not for you, then I do hope you find a game that fits. If you have any questions, though, feel free to ping me! My AIM SN is available through my profile.

Description: It's 2008 and vampires and lycanthropes alike are legalized citizens of the United States, recognized as more than monsters and endowed with their own rights. But that doesn't mean everything is okay.

New Orleans is slowly but surely recovering from Hurricane Katrina. A city known for chaos, it is finally getting back on its feet thanks in part to its were community. But that isn't to say it's safe.

Hounding The Moon focuses on a city that's been controlled by shapeshifters for the better part of a century. Things change, though. Discrimination is never far, and with it the possibility of the day-to-day world coming down on you. The threat of a takeover looms on the horizon -- the vampires want their city back -- and out there in the swamps, someone is watching, and waiting.

Requirements: Hounding The Moon is an 18+ game which is focused predominantly between instant messaging (AIM) and message board role-play. The primary character influence in-game are currently lycanthropes (prone to change as the story progresses), but we are also looking for people to play the human variety as well: normal folks, animators, witches, psychics, RPIT officers, etc.

We are not currently accepting applications for vampires, but that will change once the game gets off its feet and the game-wide storyline progresses.

So, Dreaming Out Loud might be worth a look. We're a multi-game board that just opened; right now we have three games (two fandom, one original) but we have three more games that will be opening before the end of September (two originals, and one fandom). I am all about a friendly, welcoming community and integrating new people into the games. We're account-per-player, we have optional real person pbs, and no word requirements in posting or applications. Also, I am on AIM almost all the time (my sn is xpapersoul).

user posted image
Dreaming Out Loud is a multi-game role-playing site; with both fandom and original games, we strive to create a friendly community and have a good time. That's what role-playing is all about, right? Currently, we have three games running: North of the Wall, which is set in the world of Garth Nix's Old Kingdom/Abhorsen series with all original characters; Lost in a Dream, which is set in an original fantasy world; Take the Sky, which is set in the 'verse of Joss Whedon's Firefly/Serenity series with all original characters.

The Charter has fallen: the Old Wall and Great stones are broken
and useless, and the Bloodlines had been ended. The Old
Kingdom has been thrust once again into chaos and decay,
and it seems as though Free Magic has claimed the
kingdom once and for all.

But there's about to be a second chance: new Bloodlines are
emerging, mimicking the old, though weaker. If they can
discover the truth- what really happened to usher in an age of
despair- a new kingdom could rise from the ashes of the old.
But will they ever survive North of the Wall?

What if, one night, you went to sleep and woke up in another
world? A world that in its own way is as real as the one you'd
just left; where actions have consequences, where pain and
hunger and joy are all felt. An unbelievable world of gods
and myth and magic.

For some, it's reality; each night as they drift off to sleep,
they awaken in a world that they cannot resist. An ancient
world of mystery and adventure, just waiting for someone
to take up the challenge. Every night, it is their refuge,
their haven, from a concrete world of deadlines and
disappointments. But what happens when you don't want
to wake up? What happens when you'd rather be
Lost in a Dream?

The grisly images of the last sane soul on Miranda being snuffed
out was broadcast throughout the 'verse, and it was something
that could not be forgotten. Try as the Alliance might, it could
not be swept under the proverbial rug. The questions began-
was the Alliance really responsible for the tragedy of Miranda,
the abomination of the Reavers?

Whatever the truth is, tension is brewing in the Alliance. Crime
rates in the central planets are rising, and Alliance control in
many planets has virtually deteriorated. In all of this, there
are still those who are unsure. They do know one thing for
sure: no matter what else- their sanity, their lives, their rights-
the Alliance can't Take the Sky.

Some facts about Dreaming Out Loud:
  • All games are focused on original characters.
  • We're an account-per-player board.
  • Three more games are coming soon- an original horror, an original real-life and a Harry Potter game!
  • We're super friendly, and the games are built so that new characters won't get overlooked.
  • Members can submit and run their own games on our board.
  • Come give us a look, you know you want to!

Inch Academy
“Harmony. Honor. Knowledge.”
Ever looked around you and wondered about someones heritage? Sat next to the kid with the big canines and noticed a different kind of glint in their eye? No? Then clearly you need to expand your horizons. You must have heard the phrase 'not all that glitters is gold'. Well more adept term for this school would be 'not all that breathes is human'. Here in Sleepless Inch lives not just those who would claim themselves to be humans but those who would claim to be otherwise. There is no limit to what species of being one may find if they set foot in this slow paced village. But you may wonder what happens when families of such descents settle here, what happens with their children? Well those are the ones that find themselves enrolled in 'Inch Academy' a school that has no limits. All species mingle in the castle, those who are solely human to those who are very much far from it. But just because these kids rub shoulders everyday and sit together in history does not mean it is without conflict. There are those who think they are better than others and of course those who are just waiting to show them different. But what to expect in a high school that contains a multitude of beings?
Though even with these slight scuffles between species and the occasional battle of wills Inch Academy still remains one of the most prestigious and sought after boarding schools in Europe. It is noted that students from every corner of the Earth apply to the school and with luck they are usually accepted, such makes the school such a varied and versatile establishment. Think you're good enough?

Each thought, each dream, and each story creates a separate universe. There are billions and billions of parallel universes created by our own actions. It’s no surprise where there is an alternate universe where two people’s original roles are switched.

The Doctor and the Master, last of the Time Lords. The Time Lords were once an ancient and powerful alien species that was wipe out during the last Time War. We all ready know that part right? The Doctor goes around, saving people while trying to control his friend the Master. We have all seen how evil the Master can be. Everything is set into motion, nothing can be undone. The Doctor is always good and the Master is always evil. End of story, right?

Oh, very wrong my dear friend.

In this plane of existence, it just took one thing to set everything upside down. Just two people changed the universe that we knew. The Doctor took off in his TARDIS after he being deny one and the council set his best friend the Master after him. Originally after that, the Master turned evil and the Doctor kept saving people. It didn’t happen like this. The Master abandon his long time friend, going to help other people that fell victim to the Doctor. And the Doctor, he turned as evil and dark as a black hole.

Now, the actions after this were still present, only the roles were reversed. The Doctor made the universe fall victim to his sinister deeds and the Master tried his best to stop him and save the universe with the friends and companions he made along the way. This happened for years.

Then the Time War started and the Doctor was asked to help the Time Lords. He did that, only in hopes of taking over Gallifrey. But he didn’t get his way. When the Daleks took control, he panic and ran and turned himself into a human at the end of the universe. He changed his DNA to where he was human and kept his Time Lord self inside a fob watch. He was human and took up the name Professor Yana. He grew old and older, helping humans try to reach a new galaxy. Utopia.

He was happy and carefree then, actually being normal. Then the Master arrived in his TARDIS with Martha Jones and Captain Jack Harkness. Then everything went to Hell when Martha Jones pointed out his pocket watch, somehow knowing what it was from when the Master turned himself into a human. When he was able to open the pocket watch, he change back into his old self, the Doctor. When his, or rather Professor Yana’s, alien assistant got scared and shot him, he was force to turn into his current form.

The Doctor once more, he found his own T.A.R.D.I.S. and made sure to damage the Master’s, at least to stop him from following him for awhile. He traveled to the twenty-first centenary and took up the human name of James Bishop in the British Empire and used his charm and powers to get into the Prime Minister election and of course won under the name James Bishop.

In the hopes to stop his once time friend and save Earth, the Master joined up with Torchwood with Jack Harkness. But the Time Lord couldn’t even save one of the members from falling into the Doctor’s grip.

Ianto Jones went to the dark Time Lord’s side with the promises of more power and has his way. Ianto was tired of everyone talking down to him and treating him like a tea boy and errand boy. He hoped to be with the Doctor to prove Torchwood wrong and gave him their secrets in exchange.

In replace of Ianto Jones, Captain John Hart-ex Time Agent joined up with Torchwood. With two ex Time Agents, one Time Lord, and the power of Torchwood behind them, they hope to stop the Doctor once and for all. But can they do it?

I don’t know. But what I do know is that this parallel universe is one of the few...

Shattered Realities.

I have two games with settings that might interest you!

Three Wishes is straight up steampunk fantasy inspired by Asian mythologies. Sorcerers and alchemists, clockwork mad scientists, kung fu monks, the works. Tradition wars with modernity in an industrial revolution; gods walk the earth while the fascist government demands their travel papers.

Silvermoon is a little bit steampunk, a little bit sci-fi, and a little bit rock and roll. It's a pulp adventure melodrama, so anything and everything goes -- if you have a concept, any concept, it could find a home here. We have space pirates, mata hari spies, voodoo on the bayou and cannibalistic sun worshippers. The more over-the-top and hilarious it is, the better it is.

Both sites offer an incredibly welcoming and friendly OOC atmosphere; there's always something going on in the shoutboxen and we love helping new people get involved. Feel free to hit me up on AIM or the cboxes if you have any questions or suggestions!

Hi,
I thought I might suggest my RPG Vampire Academy. Although we are loosely based of a school/academy type environment, enrolling in classes is not compulsory.

It is pretty free form, no minimum posting lengths, although the more the better. Not based of a fandom, and if you find it is it's completely accidental. Although it is based around vampires, I will accept any other creatures that you can come up with.

At the moment everyone is posting PG-13, but i don't mind more violent/graphic posts. As long as it has a warning, I don't mind. The only exception is NC-17, is not allowed. But i am willing to allow it, if a password-protected topic.

Everyone is friendly, not overly active at the moment, but i am trying to get it more active. The member count is a little misleading, as i require a new account for every character some people have several characters, I myself have 3.

Anyway, I hope you take a look. If you like it, feel free to join! if you don't, thanks for looking.

The Year is 2012.

Countries worldwide have fallen like dominoes to the diseases of 'Greed' and 'Power'. With the United States and Great Britain gone, it was only a matter of time before the rest of the world fell victim to the same fate. Only one place was able to stand strong against this self destruction.

It's a world where the gangsters rule like kings and the good people tremble in their wake. How far will you go to become one of them? Or will you become another nameless corpse on the street? In a world where the Gangs rule everything from police stations to grocery stores, will you be the last one standing in the end?

But what lurks in the shadows of Japan is much worse than any gang or weapon. Welcome to the city of Nihon, Japan, a city that will see brighter days ahead...the only catch is, can everyone stay alive long enough to witness peace?

Our site is a freeform rpg. We do not limit the role-play with main plots but give our members the opportunity to explore exotic cultures, create characters of many walks of life and race, as well as indulge in the depth of our magic and Steamskills systems.

Welcome to the Steampunk world of Legend Makers.

Seeing as we have a lack of main plot line, here's a bit about our current political situation:

The former King was lately found to have died of natural causes at the age of 35. Predicted cause of death was heart failure. Unknown to most, the result of his kingship's death was from a large quantity of Foxglove in his soup, which in small doses is classed as a drug used to aid those with weak hearts, yet large doses can prove fatal.

Following the death of the King, his child Alexander the III has taken up the role of monarch at the young age of 7 years old. Due to his age and inexperience, the Church has offered their services in helping run the Kingdom temporally until his 16th birthday when he can take his rightful position in the political world, seeing as his knowledge of the political world and faith will be up to acceptable standards.

Unknown to the public, the Church has lead the continent for the past 100 years by pulling such stunts similar to this one:

Monarchs have been used as political puppets, to be used when useful and discarded when posing a threat, much like the former king Alfred the IV. His Rule was cut shot due to a few outcries on his half against the Churches current place in the political world, (unaware, every decision he ever took as King was moulded by the Churches very hands). This lead to a momentary laps in the peoples respect for the Church. The Puppets strings were quickly cut away, opening a position for a new monarch, a new face for the church to hide there scheming behind.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away...

After a two thousand year technological halt, things have begun to pick up again in the galaxy. However, the galaxy has returned to a state all too familiar to history. Five thousand years ago the empire was born and the rebellion came about, now five thousand years after the rebellion and the struggle between the rebel and imperial forces, the galactic empire has been reborn. Now as large a superpower as that of the galactic alliance, they are back in the running for galactic domination.

Unlike five thousand years ago, the mandalorians are now a key factor in the events of the galaxy. They themselves have amassed a sizeable force and have persuaded a few brute races to join their cause. An enemy of both alliance and empire, they stand alone, in defiance of any sign of order.

The Jedi order has split into three different orders and have grown from there. While each order is not fully aligned with any particular faction, the three jedi orders seem to be in favor of the galactic alliance, save the gray jedi who are known to have jedi fighting on both sides.

The sith, while also having been around throughout the ages, are still in the shadows; waiting, watching, and planning to move when their time is right. Under the one known as Venalus they seem as if they will be able to be able to make their move.

Criminals, criminals, oh the criminals. Crime of course is up everywhere and affects everyone. However, the criminals of the age are proving to be smarter than those of old, as they expand in their criminal industries. While some criminal organizations aren't entirely criminal and others are, there may still be some form of crime in the future should most of it be shut down by the authorities combating it.

The common people, or freelancers, are just the people making their own way in the galaxy. They don't have any real ties to anyone or any faction in the galaxy. It is most commonly said about freelancers that they are just out for themselves and could all but give a damn about anyone else, but thats just what other people say.

The aura of the force surrounds everyone and everything. Whether it draws you in or not, you are a part of the force and it is a part of you. Only you can make your own destiny and fulfill it. Choose wisely for there are many paths before you.

The Aura of The Force Surrounds Us All

I think Angels is exactly what your looking for, we've got the literacy, the characters, the Sci-fi to the max, and since it's anthromorphic there's no way real pictures can even be available xD.

Our story is unique, complex and everyone is working together to write it.

Here's our original ad, for more info:

Angels is a futuristic anthromorphic ("furry") RPG story-line following the uneasy Reconstruction of a technologically advanced island city after a terrible tragedy, and the quest of it's citizens as well as the infamous Hour Glass Guild to save it.

Richly detailed and full of dark, fantastic themes, we launch our members deep into the plot of the RPG from the start, so soon the characters become immersed in a quickly unfolding, fast-paced science fiction mystery.

Darkness thrives in this freezing world where beasts dominate the earth, social struggles divide a once peaceful city and the strong battle relentlessly to defend those who cannot defend themselves.

The Gates are opening...

Well if it's gritty urban fantasy your looking for Bump in The Night may be just the place for you. We are a very friendly bunch, and are always glad to help out new players.

---

There is no war between lycanthropes and vampires. The were-folk do their best to avoid the night stalkers and the night stalkers do their best to keep out of pack affairs. While lycans rule the suburbs and vampires stalk the high crime end of town, they don’t mingle well. Their separation also allows them to remain hidden- hidden from the basic laws and physics of the one dimensional human world. That’s how everyone likes it and that's how it's meant to stay.

At least, mostly everyone. A modern Sherlock Holmes, John Alden is known for solving cold cases and puzzling crimes. It was only a matter of time before the missing persons, maulings, and murders would unearth timeless mysteries. John Alden has uncovered the world’s best kept secret and there’s a legion of supernatural beings that will stop at nothing to keep it that way.

John knows that no one would believe that vampires and lycanthropes exist, let alone commit crimes and murders. He also knows that these supernatural beings could never be incarcerated. But he could deal out his own justice, with help of course. The kind of help from docile lycanthropes and a few vicious vampires, has brought many to justice. Only those who have managed to remain secluded and unpunished are the witches. Their conniving and secretive ways remain a mystery to all, save for a select few who have gained enough trust to dive into their corrupted world.

The witches have remained unscathed in the dangerous city of Aldenville. Until recently. A strange case that was assigned to John Alden would just look like an ordinary woman attacked by a vicious dog while out for a jog to anyone else. But John’s knows better. He needs help to figure out why anyone would want to commit the first witch assassination in years. He needs to find it out fast before the witches turn on the lycanthropes. He needs to find it out before his whole city goes to hell.

Will you be brought to justice, or will you be the harbinger? Or… will you just go on through life without knowing about the supernaturals that live amongst you and others like you? You can only ignore it for so long. Even a young child notices when things go Bump in the Night.

At Bump in the night, there is all sorts of possibilities for plots- from joining in the new order, to taking various high-level positions that remain open, the possibilities are endless. Positions open include Coven leader, Witch Council positions, Pack positions.

We're mildly slow moving right now, but with the devotion of the members already on site, things are definitely looking to pick up. Join in now to get the positions that are going fast!
