Title: Pregnorexia? Wtf?
Catalyst - August 28, 2008 03:51 AM (GMT)
You read it right: Pregnorexia. A scary new trend of pregnant women trying to gain as little weight during pregnancy as possible. Some go so far as to not eat at all simply because they want to maintain a slender body. To them, it is a honor to be able to wear non-maternity clothes well into the pregnancy. And it's being influenced by pregnant hollywood stars who seem to literally bounce right back and not look like they've ever had a baby. One of the main goals of one who is 'pregnorexic' is not to even look pregnant from behind.
I think this is so superficial and vain. These mothers would risk the health of their babies just to maintain an idyllic body size and shape. It is obvious that appearance is way more important to these women than their babies. It really just sickens me how the world can only seem to get more and more vain by the second. I never thought I'd hear of something like this but here it is!
Some people should just not spawn. :rawr:

Just wrong.
And I agree. Those ppl should not spawn. Just like Britney Spears. OH WAIT! She did. Damn.
antisocialist87 - August 28, 2008 04:13 AM (GMT)
Have people gotten that freaking stupid?
YOU WILL GAIN WEIGHT! You will retain water, etc. Besides, nothing is good about a woman who is not only sick throughout her pregnancy because she wants to be slender and not have to wear maternity clothing (which, IMO, can be pretty damn cute), but she is also starving the fetus as well.
Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Some babies shouldn't be cursed with mothers like that.

I'm all for getting people fixed so they can't procreate. (Yes, fixed as in "snip, snip, Rover.")
This is disgusting. I hate how much emphasis our society puts on figure and weight and how we're all supposed to look up to celebrities as though they are God's gift to the earth.
Hints to Pregnorexics:
Hint 1: Celebrities are on a very strict health diet and receive all sorts of conveniences and personal training before and after the pregnancy in order to keep their slender shapes after they give birth.
Hint 2: Babies are not parasites. Do not kill them.
Hint 3: Babies need food in order to develop fully. Rumor has it that babies whose mothers eat lots and lots and gain tons of weight are actually not only healthier but also smarter. I don't know how true that is, but I'm sure it's not based on total BS.
Hint 4: The world does not revolve around you. Think about the baby.
Hint 5: Responsibility: not just for motivational posters. You did the deed, you take responsibility. Feed your kid.
Hint 6: Babies are not just this season's latest fashion. You want to display your perfect shape with that perfect little bulge on your stomach like you would wear a mink coat to impress people.
People so totally weird me out. :innocent:

Yeah, you know who else was into that? Hitler.
Anyway, pregnorexia is disgusting, but it happens. And the women who do it and the men that encourage it are pretty much scum. It seems the fascination with pregnant celebrities has been counterproductive =/

I'm willing to guess that Dec was being facetious. But anyway
My friend just went into labor and I'm up waiting for them to admit her  She gained weight according to schedule and ate how she wanted, all healthy and that fun stuff. You can't even tell she's pregnant from behind! I attribute all this pregnorexia to the typical ignorance that is in today's society.
Off course that is a cop out, but that is easier for me to believe than to swallow that these dumb *%*^s are doing this because they are stupid.

Ugh. I've been all for people getting fixed since Jamie Lynn got pregnant. But that's just me.
Very good hints, December. Mind if I add a few?
1. Everything comes with a consequence. You don't want to ruin your girlish figure? Use a condom, for pete's sake.
2. You cannot be beautiful and slender as well as be pregnant. I've seen plenty of pregnant women, and no one looks at them in disgust.
3. YOU. ARE STARVING. THE KID. THINK, people! While you might not be hungry, your baby is! Unless you want a stillborn baby, eat!
4. Smoking and getting with child isn't wise. Not at all.

You know, getting pregnant isn't an automatic sentence to 9 months is mumus.
My aunt got pregnant and didn't gain too much weight, looked like she was about 6 months preggers when she was 8, all healthy and eating and stuff, her tummy just didn't get huge for some reason. She had the baby not even two months ago and she looks FANTASTIC, already back to pre-pregnancy weight.
My boss got pregnant last summer, blew up like a freaking hot air balloon and guess what? She carried high enough to where she was able to wear her regular jeans below her belly.
Someone should tell that to these people. Because really, they're hurting their unborn child even more than their hurting themselves and that's just wrong.

A. MEN.
A lot of people don't look at pregnant women as "You're fat and disgusting." If anything, they look at these women more like "Wow, she looks really nice as a mother."

A baby isn't like a pet. You have to look after a kid till it's eighteen, for God's sake. Well, sixteen at the youngest, but they're not adults till that hit 18.
That's a LONG time. And if you don't want that responisibility, that's why we have condoms.
And starving yourself while pregnant? You're starving two people, and one of them has NO say in the matter, and will suffer for YOUR VANITY later.
Sheesh. Some people... it beggars belief!

LOL so true. You know, Hitler also played with toy soldiers. Lets outlaw those. And moustaches, 'cause he definitely had a moustache. You know who probably couldn't tell when other people were using hyperbole? Hitler.

DUDE. Yes, I totally understand this thread. I didn't realize how big of a problem it was until I saw my cousin at the fourth of July fest. She's due in October, only sixteen years old mind you, but she's SO worried about gaining weight that she must just NOT eat. She's PROUD of the fact too! It's end of August now, beginning of September, that means she's popping next month. How much has she gained?
Apparently eight pounds.
Something there just doesn't seem right >.<
I'm sick of people being so preoccupied with what they look like that they actually put their children in harms way so they won't gain weight. Since when did only gaining eight pounds when you're SEVEN months along (I haven't talked to her since July so MAYBE she's up to twelve pounds now, oh goodie!) become a good thing?!
It's just absolutely, disgustingly, ridiculous.
missmossxx - August 30, 2008 05:44 PM (GMT)
I must ask, is this just a play on words, or considered an actual eating disorder?
Because if it's the latter, I have to disagree with what people have said.
If it's a real eating disorder, people can't help it :/ It's really sad, don't you think? Eating disorders usually stem from deep rooted problems, and have nothing to do with the media at all, and it's unfair that sufferers seem to have this stigma attatched to them.
Unless, of course, they were one of the people that actually wanted an eating disorder because they think it's glamorous. :/
However, if it is a play on words, then I agree with you all that it's an incredibly stupid thing to do. xD
((Haha, I've read Monkey Taming by Judith Fathallah twice, and my friend writes a bulimic character, so we tend to discuss it a lot, which means I've collected a lot of opinions. xD And I'm the annoying kind of person who always likes to state their opinions at every opportunity. lol))
Catalyst - August 30, 2008 08:01 PM (GMT)
I'm pretty sure that, for now, it is a play on words and not an actual, diagnosable eating disorder.
Even if it is a diagnosable disorder, it is still incredibly superficial and selfish.

| Even if it is a diagnosable disorder, it is still incredibly superficial and selfish. |
It's not as if they'd choose to do it if it was a disorder though :/
So I don't get how it could be called superficial and selfish.
Catalyst - August 30, 2008 08:23 PM (GMT)
Its superficial because it is vanity.
Its selfish because they're risking not only their own life but the life of an innocent child.
They may not choose to do it if its a disorder (or they might choose to do it), but they are the ones who can certainly choose to get help for the disorder.
missmossxx - August 30, 2008 08:29 PM (GMT)
1. It's not necessarily vanity if it was a disorder, most are about control, when things in their lives are beyond their control.
2. If they don't mean to do it, then I don't see how it's selfish.
And if it was a disorder, even if they chose to get help, these things take time to recover from, it might already be too late for the baby, or the baby might be born before they've had a chance to recover anyway.
Of course, it doesn't matter if it's a play on words.. Then it is selfish and superficial, because it's something that the person chooses to do.
Sorry, I'm stubborn. xD
Catalyst - August 30, 2008 08:33 PM (GMT)
Well, I guess then that I should say it is my opinion that such eating disorders are incredibly selfish. I don't mean to offend anyone by saying that but that's how I feel.
Anyhow, I'm fairly sure it's only a play on words. I heard about it on one of those evening hollywood talk show things and then I looked it up more on google.
Since it's not in the DSM, I feel comfortable in saying its only a play on words. And hopefully it only ever stays a play on words.
That's okay... I'm stubborn too.
