This is probably not the right place to put this (though it seemed like the best place, so...yeah XD), but I figured I'd go ahead and post it anyway.

I'm currently working on the write up for my kingdom (one of three in total) in my fantasy role play, which I'm finally almost done with. However, I have been struggling to come up with different names for two of the things that are involved in my kingdom, other than the obvious. They are "Dragon Clan" and "Magi Society."

For the Dragon Clan, I was just hoping to get some ideas from anyone who might have them on what else I could call them. I certainly don't mind using those names as their actual terms, but if I can find another alternative I'd be happy as well.

For Dragon Clan, it can pretty much be anything, within reason. It just needs to make sense for dragons. For Magi Society, it's essentially a secret soicety of mages, so it would probably need to make sense as a term or name for magic users. So instead of characters saying "I'm a member of the Magi Society," they could say "I'm a member of (insert one worded term here)."

Meep, I used to be good at this stuff but coming up with anything original while still trying to make sense is really difficult.

Have you considered using different languages though? A couple of the species in my fantasy are loosely based on ancient cultures, particularly the Greeks, so I looked up words in a translator and edited the results slightly.

For example, here's how I operate when trying to come up with alternatives:

I stopped by Behind the Name to search names with the meaning "secret". Of the list that came back, my favourite was the Norwegian Dagrun, so then I went to iTools look up "clan" in Norwegian. I got klan back and quite like the idea of the Dagrun Klan.

It seems out of context for your Magi society, though, and I'd probably go with something Latin or Classic because they seem more arcane to me. But that's just me, so... Maybe try searching Behind the Name like I did, or iTools translations, and see what you get? It can be fun just seeing the combinations you can come up with. >D

You can also search the meaning on BtN, which could be handy? I searched for "dragon" and came up with Tiamat. I'd be tempted to combine it with Marduk, a god who killed Tiamat, to make the Tiamat Marduk society. XD Depending on the context, it could make a cool name. Or I could just be weird, I dunno. ¬_¬

Oh and did I mention changing the spelling, or editing slightly? You could have Dragûn Klan (that's a poor example ¬_¬) or Tiamarduk or whatever makes sense to you.

Ooh, another alternative. Seventh Sanctum has a lot of generators. Some of them are a bit on the silly side (Ancient Kingdom of Counties, wah? lol) but you can get some good ideas from the generated lists, or mix and match. :)

Well, it wasn't really until today that I even thought of trying to come up with different names for them, and I made this thread not long before I had to go to work...but no, I didn't think of using different languages, really. I tried to go to an English-to-insert-language-here translator and do stuff with that but that did not help at all.

I like the idea of calling it Dagrun Klan, though. It's simple enough and seems to work.

oooh, I like using Tiamarduk for the Magi Society. I think I might do that. XD

Yeah, I've been to Seventh Sanctum a number times, and it's exactly because most of those generators do come up with silly results that I tend to stay far away from it. The only thing that really comes to be of any use is when you're in a generator category and in the corner towards the top on the right side are the off-site links for other generators.

If I'd had more time, I'd have suggested a few more for you but I'm glad you found the ones I did suggest useful, at least. I like playing with words but, like I said, coming up with something both original and that makes sense is pretty difficult these day. xP
