Title: Comic Or Movie Verse?
Description: which is more popular?
tankgirl - August 22, 2008 04:00 PM (GMT)
i've made my site, it's an x-men board, the forums are done and everything, and i've created two sets of graphics, one based on the comics and one based on the movies, but i'm undecided, which should i use and which universe should i set my board in if i want it to be as popular and frequented as much as possible?
i have a feeling a movie verse board will get more members but i don't know... input?

I, myself, prefer movieverse, but there are plenty of people who prefer comicverse. If its done well, originally, with good writing, ect. it doesnt really matter which one its in. =D A lot of X-Men fans would play in both.

At this point, the (main) X-Men comic canon universe has been going on so long and is so muddled that only die-hard fans are going to have a really firm knowledge of it. My current board is movieverse, which I think is more accessible. You can also say something along the lines of: "This is the world, this is the history. You can play any version (movie, main comic, Ultimates, Evolution, etc.) of a character, as long as he/she is modified to fit into the world/history." It has the downside of your having to write an overview of the world's history, but means that people can play whatever their favorite version of a character is.

More people are familiar with the movies, methinks. I've seen the movies and I read a couple of the comics, and I'll say that it's much easier to watch the movies and understand what's going on than it is to read a handful of the comics.
However, that said, it's really up to you. It depends upon what you want to do. Make it either and if you are a good admin, active, fair and creative, you will (hopefully) get members either way.
I hate to influence you in such a way because I know I won't be joining, but I would have no qualms about seeing both live action and comic decorating the board. And as long as you clearly state what realm it is in (ie, give examples not just say that "this is from the comic/movie" in case someone who is more familiar with the opposite joins), I see where people will have no problem switching over.
Did that even make any sense?

yeah it makes pretty good sense, i have a feeling that naturaly, as you guys have said, the movie verse is better known and easier to understand if not purely because it's like a total of 6 or 7 hours of screentime while the comics go wayyyy back and have a such a rich and glorious prestigious slice of history to get kneedeep into.. i guess folks will always be more willing and intrigued by things that are easier to understand and more laid out right in front of them, unless there's some dudes and dudettes out there who get off on being in the dark with an enigmatic history and whatnot (ok im rambling)
so i think the most sensible idea, activity based, would be to go for the movieverse, and i've considered the idea of like a multiverse that merges both worlds but i'm pretty weird on these things, and i don't like boards that use both comic and real pictures in graphics etc so i always prefer one or the other, hmm i think it's gonna have to be the movie verse this time- the first time too

Depends on the plot.
Currently, out of all the boards I play on, only two are not in some way comic based. I really hate the sites that let you choose if it's movie or comic and, while I prefer comics, most people tend to prefer movies. That's why I'm on a lot of boards. I have to get my kicks wherever I can get them. :p
But, if you're plot is movie based, go with the movie graphics. If it's comic based, go with the comic graphics. Because, let's be real, they're way different so you really ought to pick one.

Sadly, most people prefer movie-verse. And it does make sense. There's only one history, whereas there are heaps of different histories and characters in the comic-verse. If you went comic-verse, it'd make sense to choose only one...type? Whatever the word is. Series, perhaps.
But comic is better.

i think the word is universe, eg the main verse in marvel is 616 while theres a variation of alternate universes and then theres the ultimate universe blahblahblah

I will point out those that since most boards are movie verse, if you go with comic verse you are more likely to attract the comic fans who have been wanting a comicverse site. So I would just go with your own preference.

I think there are more people who would enjoy movies rather than comics. I mean, everyone has seen a movie, but not everyone has read a comic they thoroughly enjoy. I, myself, have never been addicted to a comic, but that is another story when it comes to movies. But, the marvel and more popular comics that people at least know about (probably because there have been tv shows or movies about them?) would be quite popular. And I guess it doesn't matter if it is popular or not...just that you enjoy it. So...I just contradicted myself. ;)

im still debating over which is best, the graphics for both movie and comic verses are still stored in my iphoto
however i guess i have made steps (even if theyre small) as the hellboy board ive just finished ive gone with the movie, but i guess thats because from my own experience i only have the two movies to go by

Comic! There is so much more choice and it looks light, yet oh so serious. The artwork can be funny, moving, powerful and beauuuutiful, which is good for your graphic-y needs, but the stories are deeper, the characters are more developed and you have way more of them. Plus it's pretty easy to get filled in as much as is necessary to play. I don't read X-Men comics anymore--and when I did it was 50 issues of Uncanny X-Men and an entire collection of Gen-X, yet I still play on X-Men games and still have canons I want to play. I find with the X-Men movieverse you're much more limited.

I'm going to go with a mixture of the two. : ) Helpful, right?
I love, love, love comic book movies, even the really terrible ones (although I love those mostly because of their unintentional entertainment value) but I don't have much experience with comics, save for the few my dad used to get me when I was younger. I think this applies to a good chunk of people, and here's my idea why...
Movie Verse= they set everything up for you. Don't know who Peter Parker is? Don't know how Bruce chose his secret identity? The film will give you the basics (and then some) in a nice little two-hour (or more, depending on if there are sequals) summary of a superhero. You won't get an indepth examination of them, obviously, but it is much less itme consuming.
Comic Verse= there are sooooo many different versions of comic heroes/ different adventures they have gone on throughout their lives that it can get very, very confusing if you don't plan on spending hours researching. I played Siryn (X-men) for awhile on a now defunct site and that was hard because she's been in so many different series of the X-men and they continue to put her in different situations. She's not even a very major character! Most people who aren't researchers (I love it, but I know I'm a rare breed of people) aren't going to want to put in the effort like that.
So, to sum up, I think movie verse is more popular because it doesn't involve as much knowledge about the subject because there is just less available, but when you involve the comic verse world to some extent it opens up all sorts of opportunities for new characters/character development that you just don't get otherwise.
