Title: Everyone's An Expert

Vanity - August 21, 2008 10:30 PM (GMT)
Oh my god. Swear swear swear.

Unless you've actually studied the phenomenom you're talking about, or experienced the phenomenom you're talking about, you know nothing. Sit back, relax, and let those of us who have a clue fill you in.

There is nothing more irritating than some kid posting lies about things that I deal with every day. Except when people believe those lies because that's the popular thing to do.

RULE ONE: If you don't know what you're talking about, don't talk.

WildeThing - August 21, 2008 11:04 PM (GMT)
I know exactly what you mean,. and let me tell you, yoiu're approaching it all wrong. All wrong. All. Wrong. I would have done it very differently, you know the way it's supposed to be done, but whatever.

Vanity - August 21, 2008 11:07 PM (GMT)
That's funny.

At least, it was funny before you edited it. Now it's just blatant and uncool.

WildeThing - August 21, 2008 11:08 PM (GMT)
Sorry, couldn't resist. But I do know what you mean, and unfortunately, people always seem to think that because they heard about something they know all about it. Ignorance ftw.

EDIT: Will we edit every post we make in this thread? Because you're doing it wrong and I'm doing it right, I don't want to embarass you.

Ehehehe
I ALMOST didn't think it was a joke...

ANYWAY

The actual rant: I agree, it's SO frustrating. My pet peeve is when you have a disagreement with someone and to back up their argument they claim to have some special knowledge in the area. Like this one guy, when having a discussion about the new HP release date claimed "my sister's friend is in the cast"

oh yes.... how convenient...

stars may collide - August 21, 2008 11:55 PM (GMT)
RULE 2: Just because you've experienced it doesn't mean you know EVERY perspective on it.

Well...my rule two, pardon if you totally disagree x.x And yes I agree, those who believe said lies are far more frustrating than the actual liar them self. Well, most of the time anyway.

I am totally with you on this one. Someone messaged me ages back after visiting my site claiming that one of our major plot characters cannot work because she is a cross breed between an Elf and a Fae creature. He/she went off on a massive rant about fantasy and sending me lots of links showing where I had fallen down. Stating that Elves can only have cross breeds with Humans and nothing else.

He/She fell down on one massive fact though, despite the Fae created especially for my site are called Fae and very similar to Elves in movement, skills, personality etc, they are in fact a human subrace that have developed through other means. (I will spare you the detail)

But no, this person was clearly the fantasy expert and made it his/her duty to tell me so.

And regardless, it's fantasy ... anything can happen because IT'S NOT REAL.
:]

I had someone like this in a writing class. She spoke just to hear herself speak. And then she would speak on subjects just so she would be the only one speaking about it and thus make herself feel more important.

We all wanted to ship her out of the country. :yellow:

Because I seem to enjoy being the devil's advocate, you realise that we can't really talk about a lot of things because it hasn't happened to us? For example, I can't say that murder is a horrible thing to witness, because I've never witnessed it and I've not made a habit of talking to those who have.

I know you meant to extremes, but I know I'm very guilty of talking about things that I don't know about and I think a lot of people are guilty of doing that.

December, Esq - August 22, 2008 06:32 AM (GMT)
Maybe then murder is a fun thing to witness. I don't know now, do I? (This, for anyone who is confused and/or concerned, is a joke. Yes, I have a bizarre sense of humor.)

I'm sometimes guilty of it to. And so are politicians. Not that I'm a politician or anything, but I just thought I'd throw it out there. Oh, and I'm still not as bad as the person in my writing class.

I know a lot about washing machines. [/lie]

Vanity - August 22, 2008 07:38 AM (GMT)
Emma - I was being figurative. Of course you can talk about it, you just have to expect your opinion to be less valued, or completely ignored if you've got nothing substantial to back it up with.

Stars may collide - I actually do agree with you. But I'm not talking about perspectives. I'm talking about evidence. First-hand evidence is supposed to be more reliable than what someone heard from a friend of a friend. Or read on Wikipedia.

Wildething - edited.

...marry me?

I so agree, if you do not know crap about something then don't pretend you do. It doesn't make you seem smart, but stupid. And one hellova annoying pain in the mutt by the way. Sure some things you can presume but really...don't start yapping about how Freud's theories affect on today's psychology studies, or how do some certain chemicals react when combines if you have no real idea about that kinda stuff.

missmossxx - August 22, 2008 03:23 PM (GMT)
What about in IC threads? I've roleplayed blind people, people with OCD, and all sorts of other things that I have never experienced. Does that mean that I'm being irritating because I'm trying to roleplay it out? I know I'm probably gonna get things wrong, but I can't really roleplay like that.

"Soandso possibly went and did this, but he may not have, although he still might have, it's just I'm not really sure because I've never done it before."

It doesn't really work.

I'm not trying to be hostile, or anything, I'm just confused as to what exactly you're including in this. I do agree that people OOC who pretend to be experts when they're not are rather annoying though.

Temperance - August 22, 2008 04:19 PM (GMT)
I presume we are talking about OOC stuff. At least I am. Haha dunno about the rest of the people.

I was as well.

And not just people saying things, it's one thing to assume something and be incorrect, or have read something for a biased source that one might not have been aware of, but it's when people will argue with me after I presented them something else.

This happens to me with drugs most often, however, and people are generally ignorant in that aspect -.-
