Title: Does Everyone Edit?

Emma - August 20, 2008 08:41 AM (GMT)
I personally never edit my posts unless I catch a major spelling error. I write, press 'Submit post' and that's that. However, I know that Panda edits heavily when she RPs. I know she edits on here too. And I just read someone else talk about editing their RP posts.

Is that common? Because I see editing RP posts as a waste of time and usually my posts come out the way I want them anyway. Am I a weirdo?

Those of you who do edit, why?
Those of you who don't, why not?

December, Esq - August 20, 2008 08:47 AM (GMT)
I edit for some spelling and grammar errors, but I don't do any hardcore editing. Thus, I chose "no."

I'm not writing a novel here; I'm just RPing. I don't want to take the time to do any major edits because it's a constant, on-going story that I only have partial control of. ^_^

Edit--Okay, here's the real reason: I'm lazy and I just don't care. A post is a post and if it makes sense and moves along the plot and says what I want, that's all I need.

Catastrophe86 - August 20, 2008 08:56 AM (GMT)
I said yes, but I don't normally edit the actual post. I'm notorious for not closing my tags, and kind of nutty about spelling mistakes in my own posts, so if I see it, I need to edit it. Need to. Other than that, I don't edit unless I discover some major discrepancy between earlier posts and the new post. Or if I've accidentally copied only half of my post from Notepad. o.0

Sharpiefan - August 20, 2008 09:55 AM (GMT)
I edit for spelling errors, tags left open and stuff like that. I did have to go back and edit a couple of posts where my character had obviously used a crystal ball to predict the future - and it was pointed out to me in a PM I'd done it. And once I managed to contradict myself in the space of three posts!

But apart from that, no, I don't edit.

Jay Serge - August 20, 2008 10:02 AM (GMT)
Well i need to normally edit my posts becasue I often miss words out and make mistakes my spell checker doesn't pick up. I normally read over my post one before posting it but still I do still miss some stuff out :D

molly. - August 20, 2008 10:09 AM (GMT)
Like most people - I edit actual mistakes, like spelling/grammar/open tags/accidentally writing the wrong word or something... but properly editing the post, no.

HarlequinGirl - August 20, 2008 10:37 AM (GMT)
No; I only edit mistakes,.
If I do a major edit, its because I haven't finished my post as I've had to come of the computer for whatever reason.

Roswenth - August 20, 2008 12:28 PM (GMT)
I edit both for content and for mistakes. Sometimes something pops into my head that I want to add after I hit submit, and if there's no one else around then I see no problem with adding to a post. I don't generally do it if there are people waiting on the post, though.

Seanu - August 20, 2008 12:41 PM (GMT)
I usually edit my posts because I see spelling mistakes, words repeated, etc.; because I forget to check it in Word. But usually I write posts in Word. But when I don't, I usually press post, /then/ check it in Word, so I need to edit. xD

And I used bold tags ([b]) for speech in my posts, and sometimes I forget to add them on, or I only add them onto one end of the sentence, so I have to go and edit. [=

Mac-a-roni - August 20, 2008 01:15 PM (GMT)
I'm an avid editer, but mostly to fix grammar, spelling, missing words ect because if I see those, they drive me crazy. Like, insane, and I'd be thinking about them later if I didn't edit them. :p Thats just because I'm a grammar/spelling nazi (more my spelling/grammar) and it drives me nuts. (Even though I already pointed that out.)

I will also edit if I reread someones post and realize there are points I didn't address that I'd like to. Or if I contradicted the post above me, or I read the post the wrong way so I replied strangely.

So, yeah. I edit. xD

Seanu - August 20, 2008 01:17 PM (GMT)
Sometimes I wanna edit other peoples' posts, because of the grammer/spelling mistakes. XD That's how obsessed I am. I twitch when people get "your" and "you're" wrong. I just don't see how it can be gotten wrong. .__. Just put "you are" and take the a out, putting a ' thingy in instead. -explode-

SmathNa - August 20, 2008 01:44 PM (GMT)
I almost always edit--after I've posted. I don't edit in another program, though, so the flawed post will be up for just a few minutes before I get to fixing the open tags, etc. I also make really weird typos, possibly because I type so fast, like 'through' for 'threw,' which, you'd think, wouldn't happen--I know what both words mean, but I suppose my mind just goes off of pronunciation....

{SHEILA KTHXBI. - August 20, 2008 01:46 PM (GMT)
I rarely/never edit. It's not that I'm not insanely picky about grammar and what-have-you, because sadly, I am; I just try to keep it in mind while I'm writing instead of doing a huge purge at the end. But yeah, I tend to look at other people's mistakes and assume that they did it on purpose in a global conspiracy to make my head impolode, so it'd be hypocritical if I didn't edit whenever I do notice an error.

But in general, the longer it is since I originally posted it, the more I'd hesitate to edit for stuff that isn't oxford commas and such. It's not really polite to go back and change it to read 'oh, by the way, then my character stabbed yours several times in the chest' when the person's unlikely to notice that you added on such a development. xD

AshBeanNun - August 20, 2008 02:34 PM (GMT)
I edit during the process, post when I feel like I've gotten the language right, and only go back if I catch something major. So I'm a pretty slow and thorough poster, not much for editing after the fact. It can take me as much as four hours to write a post for this site and even longer for my RPs. The thought of going back to edit my posts again is mind-numbing.

Jae - August 20, 2008 02:46 PM (GMT)
I also edit in my head and on Word/whatever I'm writing in while I write, but sometimes I don't read over the entire thing again before I post it. If I catch something or find something I want to change later, then I fix it.

Ezzelin - August 20, 2008 03:29 PM (GMT)
I do what I would consider major edits -- over a period of up to two days. Sometimes I think I have the language of a post correct, and then I keep staring at it and something looks wrong.

The most I do is rearrange paragraphs and add information, so yes, I am guilty of major editing after the fact. I am also a slow and thorough poster. XD

I don't use the editing to give my characters any kind of advantage or substantially alter plot-related content. It's the wording that changes. Sloppy, careless word choice bugs the heck out of me -- in my own posts.

Everyone likes to write a different way. I believe I actually get more satisfaction out of editing a post than I do from drafting a post. ^^;

Mac-a-roni - August 20, 2008 03:49 PM (GMT)
I write in Microsoft Word. I lightly edit there.

And then I post it. And I realize a bazillion little things other people may not notice, but *I* notice it so I have to.

I edit practically every post I make, even if it is to add a letter I missed. >.<

[Just thought I'd add this instead of editing it into the other post. :p]

Mousie - August 20, 2008 04:29 PM (GMT)
Mousie is too cool for editing.

Actually, Mousie finds that if she thinks too much about postee, postee doesn't happen and this makes the Mousie sad. I'm a very thorough writer -- I go through six or eight drafts for polished pieces. It's time consuming and does my head in. So RP, I don't think.

I start at the start, stop when postee tells me it's finished, and I press the submit button. I only use word when i have to copy postee to another computer, so's my cousin can use this one.

I'm sure i have dumb mistakes in there, bad grammar, terrible writing... but who cares? I'm having fun. And posting postee means you can GET postee, and this makes Mousie deliriously happy. Postee is seven types of awesome.

I do go back and edit BBCode mistakes though. There generally aren't too many typos, Firefox picks those up, but meh... as long as postee happens, all is good!

Sir - August 20, 2008 06:42 PM (GMT)
I end up editing grammar and spelling mistakes that Word doesn't pick up (I rarely write a post without Word).

I hate typos that don't show up as wrong on Word! ):
Or missing a word or something stupid like that.

Panda - August 20, 2008 06:43 PM (GMT)
I try to, yes. Generally speaking when writing a post I will do so raw. Then I will hit 'post' and will probably give it a once over. If I catch something I didn't before, then I will edit. I rarely use preview unless posting as a guest because I have the option to read it in thread-format and make any edits necessary.

Maverick - August 20, 2008 06:50 PM (GMT)
I think I use edit more often than I think I do. Even the smallest spelling error, wrong there, using your instead of you're, I hit edit and fix it. I even want to change other posts if I see something major in them that needs to be fixed.

Nirinia - August 20, 2008 07:06 PM (GMT)
Yes, I edit. I read it over after posting, and catch any glaring mistakes or typos. And add something if I feel it is needed.

Rhi-Rhi - August 20, 2008 10:44 PM (GMT)
Yes. xD A lot.

I'm like Panda. I write the post raw, so speak, submit it--and then I read it. I'll correct any typos and errors like that...but then I may also add in details or dialogue, switch things around, delete things, or change things that I hadn't thought of while writing the post, but remembered after reading it and submitting it. xD

Usually very, very, very minor edits (though sometimes I've forgotten something major and had to edit so I could chuck it in), but it makes a difference to me! xD

Vanity - August 20, 2008 11:01 PM (GMT)
Yes.

Occasionally I'll re-read my post after I've posted and there'll be a turn of phrase or something that I'll just have to edit, or a movement my character made that I didn't describe quite right.

Or I'll think of a paragraph that would be perfect to tack onto the end. That usually happens with shorter posts.

MelioraAdmin - August 21, 2008 12:29 AM (GMT)
If I find something clearly wrong with my post, I'll edit it. I'll also edit if I sent it in early without finishing. Other than that, I generally leave mine alone. Usually there's nothing to add, and I don't want to change things after they've been read because I don't want to interfere with anyone's replies and such.

SpazzyMal - August 21, 2008 02:35 AM (GMT)
If I notice spelling mistakes or repeated words, or something that would look better re-written a bit, I'll go in and change it, of course. But once I know my thread partner has read the post, I wont go in and add things to it. If I think of something to add BEFORE that, I'll throw a quick "be patient, I'm editing" note at the top of the thread, and then go on about my business. But this doesn't happen often.

Hogwarts Unleashed - August 21, 2008 02:42 AM (GMT)
I said yes because there wasn't a sometimes option. I usually type my posts in Word and pre-read them before posting them but everyone makes mistakes, even admins, and I only edit them if I catch a mistake I missed previous to posting.

Silvae - August 21, 2008 02:58 AM (GMT)
I edit for spelling/grammar and typos, but otherwise leave it alone. I do this bare bones edit because I find it horribly distracting to read a post and find glaring typos. It takes me out of the story and leaves me sitting in front of my computer in my PJs thinking "they meant 'mind' not 'mine'".

It's only a small typo, but if it makes me stagger for even a nanosecond of reading then its has broken the flow and often kills the mood or atmosphere for me. It's so easily avoidable, too.

Emma - August 21, 2008 04:28 AM (GMT)
Heh well I didn't really get much out of this because people seemed to take it different ways - and it was different to what I meant anyway xD I realise now that I should've said I don't mean using the edit button, but writing, then looking over your post and rewriting some or all of it. So that comes before the other player knows anything about your post.

However! It's been done now so you might as well go on xD Most people do seem to edit it, though rarely in the way I meant.

Demarco - August 21, 2008 04:32 AM (GMT)
I do. I'll write the post, spell check, read it over, and see if there's something I dont like and I'll rewrite it.

So I select yes. I guess I could've selected no but eh

SpazzyMal - August 21, 2008 04:33 AM (GMT)
QUOTE (Emma @ Aug 21 2008, 04:28 AM)
I realise now that I should've said I don't mean using the edit button, but writing, then looking over your post and rewriting some or all of it.

Ah. Well, I do this, because I write my stuff in Word (and do a lot of wording/re-wording as I go through things, since I write so slowly), then when I finish I re-read and ponder on it for a bit, then see if I need to fix stuff. Sometimes I'm not happy with something, so I edit it.

RomanHk - August 21, 2008 05:34 AM (GMT)
I'll edit sometimes if I don't think something I wrote is up to par.

xprincessgwenythx - August 21, 2008 06:04 AM (GMT)
I edit on here, or OOC posts, but not really my rps.
I write mine up in my email and then I copy and paste them into a reply.
I have g-mail and it automatically saves your email, so I can always come back and redo something or make it just perfect before I post it.

Ryl - August 21, 2008 06:35 AM (GMT)
Sometimes, but usually I don't bother - our RPs can be way too fast-paced to bother with it. Unless I look at what I'm posting and think "No one's going to understand this plan as I'm trying to explain it", I just post it as is. Especially if there's a half-dozen of us online and we're ending up with a couple posts a minute. Spending time to edit for anything just holds up the rest of the group.

Metallicar - August 21, 2008 07:09 AM (GMT)
What I do:

1. Type it up in notepad
2. Mozilla spellcheck it
3. Post
4. Read it
5. Edit it

summerdanez - August 21, 2008 07:11 AM (GMT)
Firefox catches my spelling mistakes for me if I don't correct them right away. However, I rarely go back and edit as I will more than likely delete the entire post and re-write it. I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to posting so I never re-read my posts. I'll end up trying to re-write them. >.>;;

chic ambition - August 21, 2008 08:43 AM (GMT)
I would edit if I spotted any spelling mistake or grammar mistake. I try to not edit too much in this site because... I don't like the edit tag that would show up after you had edited a post. =P

Angel-girl - August 21, 2008 11:41 AM (GMT)
I do edit before, after, during the time my partner's posting. It doesn't matter as far as I'm concerned. I read back over my stuff all the time and I don't want to be stopped by stupid little errors. Once in a while too, I will edit my partners' posts, but only if I'm sure they won't mind. Little tiny stuff sticks out and bugs me sometimes.

samaside - August 21, 2008 12:47 PM (GMT)
I don't edit my research papers for school so there is no way I'm going to edit my posts any further than the little red lines that pop up on Firefox. I've never gotten less than an A- on any of those papers so I feel justified.

bloodless soul - August 21, 2008 11:04 PM (GMT)
I'm never one to edit my posts, unless one of the following occurs

In posting process (me typing out a post): catch spelling mistakes (thanks to FF)

After posting: I misinterpret the previous post and they ask me to kindly re-write a post, then I'll go back and edit.

Otherwise, everything is usually fine and doesn't need it, there is absolutely no point. So my vote stands at NO, unless someone else needs me to.
