Title: Bandwagons & Twilight (no Spoilers!)

daydream_analysis - August 19, 2008 08:56 AM (GMT)
Ok, so like a lot of people, I do like Twilight, right. I read a lot, I'll read almost anything, really. But I'm not obessed with it. It doesn't compare to a lot of the books I've read, a lot of the writing styles I've come across/yet to come across.
In my group of friends, I think two of us read. The other three can pretty much count the books they've read on both hands. I read Twilight first. it was a while after it came out, I remember all three were out. I just felt like reading it, there was so much hubbub about it. After I read it, my fellow friend/reader, Maddy, wants it. Ok, fine, she reads them and likes them too.

Recently the plague that is Twilight started to spread throughout the group. All the previous non readers started to read it, and became horribly obsessed by it, always talking about it, saying how she was 'such a good writer!' and all this junk. And then one of them comes to school and ruins it for Maddy who hasn't read Breaking Dawn yet :\
I think when they've read as many books as Maddy and I, they can start to judge 'awesome writers' properly, and what real vampires are.

I hate bandwagons.

Now I'm starting to dislike it because they all like it.

Also, WTF. I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY PUT BACK HARRY POTTER HBP FOR THE TWILIGHT MOVIE. NOW WE HAVE TO WAIT FOR JULY.
All I can say is:

EDIT: Actually, the expression on that cat's face kind of matches mine at the moment xD

Honestly, I hate when people complain about others jumping on a bandwagon. Since I'm hugely into sports I hear about it all the time and it's so annoying. We should just be happy that there are more people enjoying something you enjoy and you have more people to talk to it about. I agree that it sucks when people are obsessing over it and ruin it for your friend, but at the same time, I think that if they're opening themselves up to a new book, something you enjoyed, it should make you happy. I know I love it when more people get into football, like I am. It's nice to have someone else to talk to about it and if they enjoy it, I'm happy for them.

I know exactly what you mean.

When I first read Twilight, it was because it had been recommended to me by my favourite teacher. >.< Erm...yeah. Obviously, she isn't an English major. Seriously, I walked into World Civ one day and said, "Miss H! I'm totally reading Twilight!" and she pulled a chair up and instead of teaching class we had a long discussion about Edward and Bella. Yeah... everyone loved me, but I much rather would have learnt about World War II compared to discussing how "amazing Edward is."

Then, because I can't not finish a series when I start one, I read New Moon and Eclipse easily. I enjoyed them, they were "braincandy" as my friend calls them, but they definitely didn't make my top 10 list. But then the phenomenon started...and I got my previously stated friend into them, and now all I hear about is "squeeeee! Twilight! ZOMG!" Honestly, I wouldn't mind all that much if they would consider reading something else after the Twilight age is done.

But they don't. And they won't.

They'll go and look for the same material.

Like, my sister: LOVES Twilight. But if I try to get her to read any of my countless Fantasy books, the first question out of her mouth is: "Are there vampires? Romance?" I will tell her, "Yeah, romance, but no vampires." And she won't even read the synopsis on the back. :|

Needless to say, she only reads "teen vampire romances" now, and that just completely ruins her taste in reading, but I am glad she's reading regardless...but still.

I wouldn't be so bothered by Twilight if people didn't so crazed over it. So, what? It's a book, with a sparkly vampire and a dimwitted girl who gets herself into trouble like no other. My boyfriend can sparkle too, if he lets me douse him in shimmer, and I get myself into trouble all the time, too. Does that make me special enough to squeal about?

Annnd, HP...yeah *points to signature*

Twilight is alright, but I also don't think it's amazing literature or anything, and the little girlies going around squeeing to me about it are also getting on my nerves. I flat out tell them "Yeah, I've read them all. They were okay, but not amazing." and tell them why I think so if they ask. It's because it's a young teen book (and not even the most well-written for THAT genre) and when they get older, their tastes will, hopefully, mature beyond it and they'll understand my standpoint.

But that can only happen if they continue to read books after Twilight. Right now, most of those kids just want to read vampire romance books. ...okay, go ahead, I say. Eventually, they'll move on. They'll either keep reading once they've exhausted vampire books, or they'll stop.

Ugh.

I hope they don't stop reading... perhaps they'll move onto a more adult vampire romance genre, but... if they stopped reading I'd be really upset.

It's sad when a book like Twilight is the only book little teenie-bopper girls will read.

I'd be sad if they stopped reading too. Many probably will, however, because they've annoyed everyone else around them who likes books into not wanting to talk to them, because all they do is sqee about Twilight. XD I try to have patience, however, and recommend other books, in different genres, hoping to broaden their horizons.

But there are also some people who just don't really like challenging themselves with reading, and I suppose that should be respected. If they've got simple tastes, they can continue to read from a narrower selection of books to suit themselves, and I'm okay with that.

No, actually, I know someone who worships Twilight. She has also read the following:

Gossip Girl
Boys Who Bite
CRANK

I told her to read Cirque Du Freak. She asked if there was any romance and what the main character was:

"Boy and only in the third book, really... very lightly so."

"Not interested."

...

And the thing is that Cirque Du Freak is loads better than Twilight, in my opinion, if only one was to base it off of originality.

Wow. I never thought I'd hear someone else bring up the Cirque du Freak series, usually that's my job. Haha. I loved those books! Vampire lore-wise they're very different from what else is out there. Sure, the follow some basic principles, but like you said -- very original.

I once brought up the series in a class of mine and no one knew what I was talking about, except one boy who told me that Darren Shan once visited his old school as part of his book tour. Only, he couldn't remember the details of the visit because he hadn't really been paying attention.

Pity, in my opion. There's an author I'd love to meet. I've already met Stephenie Meyer and she's very nice. Her books are fun to read in my opinion.

My roommate absolutely adores Twilight and the series when she reads it she can't stop smiling. I love to look at her face when she reads it while she should be doing homework and I'm studying Organic Chemistry. And now I'm smiling, but it's not because I'm reading the book series. It's because it seems absurd to me. I've read the reviews and summaries, but I can't seem to wrap my head around it. So much for the bandwagon I will not be joining...

Kwentra - August 20, 2008 01:34 AM (GMT)
I have never heard of Twilight. Has it made it's way over to England or have I just totally missed it?

From the sound of it, I don't think I will be joining that bandwagon either.

oreocookie12 - August 20, 2008 01:56 AM (GMT)
I'm not sure how popular it is in England. Neither of my English friends have read it, and they're avid readers. I'm sure you could find it in a book store, though...maybe I should move to England...no Twilight teeny-boppers there.

Kwentra - August 20, 2008 02:11 AM (GMT)
That is, in one way, good then. At least it means I have not totally lost my grip on popular culture.

I am sure it will get sent this way, we ended up we Eragon o.O

As I have said in my Twilight rant:

*clears throat*

*takes a deep breath*

VAMPIRES SHOULD NOT SPARKLE!

The ONLY humanoids that should sparkle are gay men.

Screw that, I'm bringing sparkly lesbians into style. Why should the men get all the fun? Women can be fabulous too.

You have Harry Potter that's enough. haha

I did like the Twilight series, and I though it was okay. I'm proud to say I started reading it before all the craze started though. A lot of the girls who are reading it, are reading just because they think Edward or Jacob is hot. That's it. I just find that annoying. At least, that's what it's like at my school.
