Title: Likes And Dislikes...in Paragraph Form.
Description: how do you cope?
Satire.and.Ice - August 18, 2008 06:04 PM (GMT)
I find it so hard to put my character's likes and dislikes in paragraph form. Listing the stuff that they like won't hurt the application - I just find paragraph form annoying. It takes so long to fill out.
So that's a teensy rant, but a rant. >_<

Well, like other sections in an application, I guess that you really just have to 'get into' the character's voice and then try writing it... I don't know of many sites which require paragraph form for likes and dislikes, though, that seems a bit odd.

The worst I've seen, is where you list them and have to explain them. I really don't like doing that, but I've gotten use to it. The one thing that I HATE about Likes/Dislikes is when they ask for like 10 or more. I had to do that on an app last night, and I couldn't come up with all of them so I started just putting things down at random.

I don't have a likes/dislikes section on my app. I figure it's covered under 'Personality.'

I'm the same. If a like/dislike is important enough to the character that they feel a need to post it, then they'll do so under personality. Otherwise, why should it even be in the appplication?

That is the one part of our application that is not in Paragraph form. I don't think it is vital to know why they like trees in the autumn or babbling brooks. As long as they have likes and dislikes.
It is also a give away for me if anyone has not understood our setting and era. People people put in their likes/dislikes - skateboards - when they have not actually been invented.

I like including it because sometimes quirky likes or dislikes (a smell, a certain book, a certain euphemism) gives them more character than describing their personality could. I like to think of the very beginning with the opening credits of 'Amelie' because in that you just see a little girl doing a bunch of quirky little things that she likes, most of them incredibly tactile. Just from that little segment I got more insight into her personality than if the narrator came out and said 'she's shy, imaginative and has a hidden sense of humour.'

I used to hate making lists for likes and dislikes... now I love it. I always have trouble if they ask for too many, but I get it figured out eventually, and I think my characters are richer for it in the end, for the reason Silvae mentioned. I'm especially fond of the "make a list, and write a few sentences explaining each point on the list" type of likes/dislikes lists. But if you mean making likes/dislikes in just paragraph form... that's annoying to me, actually. Likes and dislikes are supposed to be for easy reference, and having to go through a paragraph makes it harder to read, to me. I could write it, but I hate reading other people's applications when written that way. x.x

I have never really liked doing likes and dislikes in paragraph form, but it gets easier after you do it over (and over.. and over... xD) After a while, it helps to just use the same likes and dislikes for different characters, or so I've found, but that's just my opinion ^^;

Cheat.
A well done personality is something that melds all the likes, dislikes, fears, passions and how they generally are all together.
Write it out as one and sneakily cut and paste the likes and dislikes. >>;;
or get an idea of their likes and dislikes and elaborate with an analogy, a sentence of a few words or something to flesh it out a bit because if they want likes and dislikes in paragraphs, they want to chew the fat.

Haha, even though I pretty much wrote from scratch, I couldn't do the ten they wanted. But they accepted me anyhow. =P
Personally I like long apps when they're not long and TEDIOUS, but with all the necessary info.

Wait. What? Likes and Dislikes in a paragraph?! Why would you need to get into details about why you don't like pudding?! Srsly?!

It's just padding and it's annoying. Who cares why I don't like the number "2." If it's really that important, I'd put it in my personality section. The site would have to be really good if I was going to put myself through that sort of stuff in order to join.

I can go either way, really. If they want it, I'll write it. If they don't want it, I'll leave it out or, if I really want likes and dislikes in there, I'll put it in my profile somewhere where it'll be relevant to whatever section I'm putting it in. I'll admit that ten likes and dislikes is an unnecessary burden, but it doesn't take that much more time out of my day.

Seriously. x_x I'm not flaming the staff, since they're really nice and all, but gosh. I was sitting here for hours trying to figure out how to explain why my character likes to read...

That's when I just make stuff up. Of course it would have to be relavent, but the admins don't know if you pull it out of your hiney.

Want to know something fun? 8D I can't even write out likes and dislikes in point form.
For my one character, I looked at the items sitting on my desk. He likes books, portable hard drives, pens and speakers and dislikes water-stained paper, calligraphy brushes and scientific calculators.
But if I had to EXPLAIN that... I wouldn't bother joining, rofl. D8
I seriously hate writing long apps, so having a list of likes and dislikes is bad enough for me. XD

I've never had to deal with an app where likes and dislikes were in paragraph form. I always have listed them though the thought of them in paragraph form makes my insides clench into a tiny ball. That sounds so icky! I'm glad I've never had to do that. I think if I found a site, no matter how good, that had likes and dislikes in paragraph form I'd just leave. They'd never even get to see my app because... EWWW
