Title: Book-based Rpg

My RPG is book-based. I am wondering if you guys think people who have not read the books would want to play also. I wrote the plot explanation, assuming everyone would have read them. I will write a more detailed explanation if you think other people might join also.

All the RPGs I have done in the past were Harry Potter based, so if the people hadn't read the books they had at least seen the first movie. This book series is a best seller (It's Wheel of Time, if anyone is familiar), but not as mainstream and widespread as Harry Potter.

What do you guys think?

It really depends if your plot is understandable. If you manage to explain it all, that's great. But it'd depend on the size of the plot. xD Things that are too big will scare people away. I made that mistake a long time ago, and even I couldn't be bothered to read it over to see if I'd made any mistakes in my idea. xD

But my new forum coming up is based on a movie. Neither of my co-admins have seen it, but they seemed to be really enthusiastic about the plot idea when I wrote it down. So I'm hoping that everyone else will be. So what you really need is some criticism from people to see if they'd be able to understand it and enjoy it. [=

With book based rpg's i have found that as long as the world (if a fantasy type book based rpg) is clear and easy to understand, so a new character can fit in easily. You should be fine with people who haven't read the canon you're based upon. Though it helps alot if your admin is happy to explain, and help you out on the finer points, that may not have been clear from the first read through.

I think it's a similar case with the plot, as long as it's clear and concise, and the admin is willing to help with clarification. As a player i'd have no problems joining a site like yours.

Perhaps. However, the fact that it is based on something people don't know would turn them off before they can really read the information you have provided, so keep that in mind.

It ultimately depends how loosely your board follows the overall plot of the WoT series. I wouldn't join one with canons, since I wouldn't know the first thing of what was going on, but if it was laid out properly, and involved the same themes, but not the same plot, as the series, I would consider it... but hesitantly.

I'm somewhat skeptical. Jordan was up to something like 14 of those door-stoppers when he died. I read the first 4 or 5 and the sheer detailing of the world was phenomenal (it was all that kept me going that far despite the cardboard characters and agonizingly slow plot). Even leaving the canons aside, you've got at least a dozen different cultures and kingdoms. Those desert people alone had how many different warrior societies? Plus there were groups like the Whitecloaks and the Tower women and the hedgewitches and the Ashawhosis.

Now, you could probably find enough Jordan junkies to put together a reasonable-sized game, but bringing in people unfamiliar with the world I just don't think would work -- particularly not as admins. You'd have to give them a huge crash course in a whole lot.

I love WoT. If you explain it well, make sure there is enough information condensed enough so thats its a quick, easy and painless read, I'm sure it will do well.

Now, if your for following the canon... whoosh. Difficulity there, unless you'd restart the whole series and start the rpg from then.. I'd be interested in it when/if you finish it. xD

Jordan died? My theory is unshakable! He was only writing because he couldn't think of an ending...

I think it might be advisable to start with one area and build around it as the board grows. Like that capital city place or Rand's hometown (TwoRivers, I think?), or somewhere.
