Title: Grappling An Opponent
Description: How can I properly do it?

Alright. I have a question that I never really had a chance to learn about. thus, I thought I'd bring it here.
In an attempt to better flesh out a combat heavy character of mine, I attempted to find a fighting style I can say this guy has studied. I found one that I liked, but it's very grapple based, a lot of moves involve either throwing the opponent, or slamming them into something. This got me thinking.
How does a character who, during a fight, attempts to perform such a maneuver on their opponent? Is it better to spend one post attempting to grab the character, and then another attempting to perform the attack (giving them a chance to dodge it, then a chance to break out of the grab before it can be finished), or is it better to just attempt the whole attack in one post, grabbing then throwing the opponent (as I know few people who would willingly give up their turn when they could just as easily maneuver out of the way of a grab)?
Just a quick question that I thought I'd ask to more experienced RPers.

If I had joined someone else's RP whose style I was not familiar with, I'd use the latter while giving them the opportunity to either dodge or wiggle free :p
Now if it was on my RP, I'd have my character perform the whole move and let the other RPer decide the damage. I find the excessive 'no godmode' rule annoying. If I poked you, I wouldn't hover my finger over your arm and give you time to swat me away before the poke ensued. I'd do it and suffer the consequences. In real life, you don't always have control over what happens to you. Someone trips you, pulls your hair, grabs your hand -- it happens and you react.
If you're familiar with the person you're RPing with, pushing the envelope is usually fine anyways because you know the other wouldn't go too far. No permanently maiming or killing characters and all's peachy ^_^

You can also fudge by posting what he plans to do, and leave it up to the other party to decide how much of it's effective... I recommend, however, plotting some things--'blocking,' if you will--in advance with the other RPer. Makes it easier to get around that pesky godmoding rule.

I would plan ahead in PM with the other person. Then going ahead and doing it would be perfectly fine if already decided that they'd take the hit. Though in the case of a spontaneous unplanned thread give them both opportunities. It'll add to your post count and you won't have a possible accusation of god-mod.

In a situation where you need to rely on a person to complement your character's action, a certain amount of creative license must be applied. I've found it's best for both characters to do some god-modding, not too much, but enough to put the other character's owner on the path you want them to take.
You shouldn't god-mod too much, for example, if you had a character who needed another character to do something specific before they posted, you could god-mod and most likely the other person (if they're good), will be able to create his/her own version of the events to keep it in their hands. If it's slightly more general, say you needed someone to send a broadcast out with a general theme, it's better to have the character, in your post, be asked to perform the action and perhaps go towards the microphone. That way you give your instructions while staying in character and make it easier for the respondent.

Ah, glad I found this thread.
I can help you out with this one. I'm very good in RP combat due to my real life experience, training, and knowledge. Grappling is my specialty in RP combat. I can explain this to you. Keep in mind, you have to be extremely cautious. The RP board I originated from which I have called "XIN 2" is combat heavy since combat is a core part of the flash animated XIN series. I won a good deal of matches with grapples: mainly chokes and submissions.
I used my real life training in Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Submission Wrestling, etc. Being on the receiving end of many techniques, I know first hand the dangerous effects they have. Years ago, I trained to compete in UFC and K-1. Unfortunately, many XIN role-players do not really grasp combat. I say combat and not martial arts.
Players will accuse you of godding or players will god out of your attacks.
To use a grapple based attack, you're going to have to be extremely descriptive. Your post quality is crucial. You have to be very descriptive. The type of attack cannot be summed up in just one paragraph. I myself have spent two to three paragraphs to explain the actions. About one paragraph for one or two actions. I had to educate my opponent on the attack and so forth. If I don't, there's going to be a lot of drama.
Also, I included links to pictures of the submissions and chokes I would be putting my opponents in.
That's how I RP grappling with my opponents. It will take time getting used to. I would suggest reading up on submissions. You can search on Google and find pictures of various submissions and chokes. I supplement my descriptions with pictures.
