Title: Destructive Environments
GreyScale - August 12, 2008 04:10 AM (GMT)
How do you deal with RP areas that have been destroyed during an RP that wasn't specifically hosted by the staff?
Like, say, what would you do if a character took the head off the Statue of Liberty during RP? Would you pretend it never happened? Say magically the head was fixed back on overnight? Edit New York's description to say that the head was cut off, and thus make it a permanent thing?
It doesn't really happen often, but ya know.
This topic is probably geared toward the more combat related forum staff.

I'd keep the damage exclusive to whatever thread it happened in, unless it had a cool or interesting enough backstory to keep. Honestly, I don't make places to have them wrecked but I guess in some cases, it just happens.
Of course, I'm used to boards where each individual thread doesn't have anything to do with another thread unless you want it to. So, I'd say it's up to the admins. Depending on the situation it can either be random, mindless carnage, or a brilliant idea that makes an area interesting or unique.

Well, I ask in my rules that any major damage that would affect a location on a large, noticeable scale be approved first. P: So if they wanna have a plague attack the whole of one of the established cities, they need to run that by me and the admins first. I don't really like the idea of threads being in a vacuum--I like that the events of one thread will impact directly onto the game world, otherwise it's just...kinda weird to me. |:
So players are free to, say...destroy a random NPC house in a city. Sure, go for it! But if they wanna do something that will alter the environment on a large scale and realistically affect a lot of characters, I need a head's up first. :3 Because I do like to change the game world as it's changed by the characters.
Stealing the head from the Statue of Liberty in a game with the Statue of Liberty as a major landmark/location would count in my book. :B

If you're gonna do that sort of thing, it's polite to get permission first. But some people just don't think.
I'd say make a decision about whether the statue's head is staying or going, then write a new rule about whether people have to ask permission or let you know when they do that sort of thing and make an announcement about the change to the rules.

I have to agree...asking for permission first is a good way to go. But, I think that if someone worked it out the right way (or maybe just in a way that amused me) I'd let their character take off the statue of liberty's head...and it would stay that way for the rest of the game. But, that might just be me. I tend to like there to be a feeling of a permanent, real world to my rpg's.

Couldn't agree more. There's nothing really come up yet, but if someone had an interesting plot idea that involved blowing up something major, I'd sound it out. Hell, I play in a setting where they blew up Wayne Manor; who am I to try to keep the city intact? :p

Go nuts.
I just want to be told before or after the fact (note, not 'asked') so I or they can make everyone aware of the change in scenery. If they are going to rip to ruins another player's shop or home, then I expect them to be told as they may not be as carefree as I. There is only one building I'd be concerned about keeping, just so the destruction can involve more people. The way information is being released on the game, it makes fly-by building-blow-up kind of hard.

For more public areas such as the market area on my site, I would be happy to post a thread stating the current situation there rather than change the description of the forum itself.
If it came to more major locations such as the palace, unless it was a major part of a main plot which would effect the whole site I would keep the details of their role-play to that single thread, seeing as we don’t just want the palace to blow to pieces because someone decided it would be a laugh lol
