Title: Progressive Treking
Description: Or whatever you want to call it.

Forgive the title. Dunno what to call it.
You know the RP system where you don't just appear from RP Area A to RP Area B in the blink of an eye? Where you actually have to RP out moving from RP Area A to RP Area B in order to get anywhere else?
In case that doesn't make sense:
I'm talking about the system where you have to RP out moving miles in order to get from city A to city B.
Yeah, that one.
What are your opinions on this system? If you've used it or seen it used, in what ways was it implemented and used?

While, in theory, that would make sense, for a game I don't think it would work out nicely.
Sometimes, traveling is mundane. Traveling from Point A to Point B usually *isnt* important, unless something happens during it, which would usually be in a thread anyways. (I digress ^^).
Role-playing isn't playing every moment of your character's lives. It's fleshing out important moments. Its unrealistic to expect people to post every move they make. I would get sick of it and just stay where I was. XD

Boring.
Not just a little bit boring, either. Like, a lot boring. There's a whole lot of boredom right there for me.
I love my characters and I'm sure other people's characters are equally loved, but for them to be interesting enough for me to want to roleplay their every waking moment when they travel around, that's really pushing it. I love and know them well enough to say that no, they are not that interesting. I am already one of those writers who has to work at every single post, let's not make it even harder for me by forcing me to also roleplay out the pointless sections of roleplay.
There are things in roleplay that can be assumed. Travel is one of them, lest you are looking to flesh out your post or have something interesting happen along the way. While it reflects the mundane aspects of reality, unless writing the travel part has a point--however small it is--then I fail to see the need. If I were forced to play on one, I'd cheat in every way possible. Sleep through most trips, summarise the rest wherever possible, or simply create a character who never went anywhere but the single street they lived on.
Mwahaha.

I both agree and disagree. For me, roleplaying isn't just about the important moments of a character's life: I also like to roleplay mundane events that isn't going to have a huge impact on his or her life. That being said, I don't think I'd ever go for a roleplay style where I'd have to play out every mundane moment. That would get boring pretty fast, so while I do enjoy the occasional meaningless thread, I prefer a more fast-paced style of roleplaying.

I think that would work well with Historical/fantasy/medieval rpgs the best, as traveling is only part of the adventure. Whereas in modern rpgs... all you gotta do it hop in your car and take off... that would be boring for me. However, with the medieval rpg I'm working on or any medieval rpg for that matter, could easily take to this idea.

I think it's called a linear RPG, actually...
The first RP I ever joined was like this, and I can't say I minded it. Not that it would work out for every RP, God no, but it worked (and still works) for this one. I think it all depends on the type of RP it is, and the people involved and whatnot :p

On the forums I'm on they call it a Live RP =)
It works well enough, not many people listen to it though, because people in different timezones find it difficult to join in with group things, considering if you leave without making your character leave, you'll come back to like, a tonne of replies of conversation and you character would just appear to be a frozen mute there xD

Oh god please no. xD
Many of my characters travel a lot on long, epic journeys that span across countries. I would hate to have to RP out an entire journey of weeks and months. While I generally stick to a linear style of RPing, I do not RP out the whole trip. Me 'n' my partners will RP out any major things that happen along the way and then just summarize the rest and BAM--they're in the new location! Sometimes nothing major happens, so we may just end a thread at location A and then begin the next thread at location B and give a quick summary of the trip, but since it was unremarkable there was no reason to actually play it out.
But in any case, I don't really see the point in having an actual traveling system. :\ But I prefer a free-form style that lets the players decide if they just wanna skip the travel scene or want to actually play it out is grueling detail. ;D
A system like that would make me want to pull my hair out--or just not let my characters travel. :B

XD
Well, the only reason I considered this system was because my friend suggested that it'd make my forum-to-be more realistic.
But yeah, I basically had the "Ugh, no," response most people are having, so decided to ask if people actually had an interest in such forms of RP.

It sounds too annoying and rather boring after a while. I mean, just saying..."I'm GOING!" then have that character leave is just fine. Why actually make a post about your character's travel?

Where's Decemeber? I feel like she should be all over this thread.
And for the record, I've played on a site with a similar system. It sucks like whoa, at least in my opinion. More time is wasted role-playing transitions than actual interactions. Not my cup of tea.

I sorta agree with the everyone here, if my opinion even matters. I have been RPing for nearly a decade and it gets rather boring typing out every individual step that your Char takes. But as long as you make it interesting to follow along, I really don't see a problem with it. Npc Characters can be a beautiful thing when your posting trips and such, especially with battles, thievery, drama, etc.... It really all depends on if the trip is a major plot. But don't take my word for it, it's just my opinion on it. LOL
