Title: Things That Generally Irritate Me
Description: RPG rant;

Badfaith - August 7, 2008 04:20 AM (GMT)
Jeez, I just gotta get this off my chest I'll just list a couple. Some things speak for themselves.

If you don't agree with something I say here, that's fine, I don't mind debating it, just don't push too hard. This is my rant after all. It's not supposed to be rational xD

---

Rules against character art instead of face claims, or worse, rules against NOT having face claims

okay, I see all these literate RPG's that supposedly encourage creativity, but on several RP's my tendency not to choose popular face claims have landed me in trouble, I often get it in the form of a reply to my biography, which is otherwise perfect except I don't have a picture yet...they hold up my acceptance on those grounds.

I find myself asking "What do graphics have to do with my biography? I just did a detailed description of my character, are you so wrenched that you can't just read it and see your own version of her in your mind, like I did"?

I realize face claims are more than popular, their generally accepted, but what if there is no celebrity that looks like my character? It may be inconvenient I suppose, but I'm not going to pretend my character looks like Ashley Tisdale for someone. No. My character looks like my character and I base him/her out of specific image in my head. If an actor happens to inspire/ look like 'em fine. If not.

Hell I might use my art! What's wrong with using art instead? I understand not having say, anime bunny girls but things you draw yourself or have someone commission for you? It's just ridiculous how yada people can be about little breaks from comformity.

---hell I'm being a drama queen, but it really irks me that some admins will turn a decent, well written character down because of their own vanity and need to control everything.

---

"Code it yourself" affiliate buttons

Oh boy.

I ranted about this on the Cbox, it's usually coupled with the explaination "If your the kind of affiliate I'm looking for you should code the banner yourself..."

Yeah, like I'm imposing on you by affiliating with you, -grits teeth with urge to explode at all the pretentious pricks-

---

Bans on bisexual/homosexual characters.

It's not my problem if your site is overpopulated with gay dudes, I like my little boys! -clings to them and cries-

Yeah, I can actually see the reason behind this one, but it's still really inconvinient so I'm gonna complain about it. (no offense to stressed out admins trying to maintain realistic atmospheres).

---

Disney Channel Stars.

Okay it's not strictly RPGs either, but I definitley considor it related.

---

Reclusive/inapproachable/elitist staffers.

What's the point of even having them if they avoid all your members like the plague? Why do people have to be so egotistical? You own a forum? I do too, I'm not under any impression that it makes me special however, and it means I can generally give people the cold shoulder.

---

Bashes on "furries"

This tends to get to me because I am one, but is it any worse than being an anime fan? I've seen photos of their conventions, large hairy men in Sora costumes shouldn't point fingers. (I happen to be a crossbreed, furry and anime. )

I'm basically a pacifist despite how this tangeant may make me seem, so I'll add

bashes on anyone

---

biography forms with ridiculous requirements

I'm willing to put maybe a day or two into the making of a character at the most. One of my first advanced Harry Potter RPG's had my version of young Lucius taking a week to accept.

Not just because I was just begining not to fail either, for everyone else it took just as long. by that time I was bitter and dispirited...

---

elitists.

My definition is people who complain about horrible 13 year old RPers, as if they were never those themselves.

I hate Mary Sues as much as the next admin but I have a certain level of empathy, I've taught many a person how to RP, I push them, but I don't turn them away unless they break the rules or give up themselves.

To me Rping is about learning HOW to be a better writer while having fun, how does this ever continue if people are intolerant and refuse to be understanding and patient to newbies?

Not to say I'm that great at RPing anyway, but hell, I share what I know.

---

no doubt I'll think of more things as people continue to amaze me with their utter phailure.

You just nailed a lot of RPs with that rant.

Good job.

<3 I love you.

The art one is especially a pet peeve of mine. I refuse to use a "PB"--I draw my own characters, thank you verreh much! No, I'm not gonna use some stupid celeb to represent my character. I know what my characters look like better than anyone. Thus, I will draw my characters.

That's why my own games have no limits when it comes to using pictures. People can use what they want or use nothing at all, and we have a lot of artists who draw their own characters. Most people don't even use pictures because, well...there's that thing called writing. xD

The only restrictions we have on images is that players are not allowed to steal art. In other words, no taking pictures off of Deviantart and using it without credit. Art thieves suck.

But yeah. I find it disturbing how much emphasis is placed on graphics in a lot of places. Graphics are fun! I like making pretty signature graphics and junk. But they should be only supplemental and optional, not important as I see it. :\

Word on the banned bis/homosexuals, too. Heck, I feel the same way about bans on any character type. xD The way I see it, if there is an influx of, say...a bajillion girls and no guys, it's up to the members to fix the "problem" by creating characters to balance it out. Same with orientations. The members will figure it out. Me? I don't wanna be restricted.

Word to everything else, too. You hot the nail on the head. <3 Marry me.

Beamin' bride

Yer doin' it wrong.

;3

edit;

Oh yeah, and I agree about the art thievery thing, I have my very own art sugar daddy so I'm not really in need, but usually artists are nice enough people, all you have to do is ask and give credit

and if not

well too bad, they went through the effort to draw it and they can choose how it's used, if at all. xD

What's bizarre is how often roleplayers want this stuff. You'd be amazed how many people won't join an RPG that doesn't require celebrity face claims, or that think an RPG with a short application must be too simple.

I agree with everything except the pb stuff, though I don't disagree entirely.

On my site-in-progress, pbs are not required nor even particularly encouraged, but I don't allow art. Why? Because I have been in so many communities where art has been ripped from hardworking artists without their permission, with absolutely no credit given. And then, when they're asked not to use it because the artist specifically states not to use their work without permission, they say "but I cropped it and added text and made it shiny, so it's my work." No, it's a derivative work, and it's stolen.

I'm tired of trying to weed out the thieves from the actual artists, so I only allow celebrities and models, if you're going to use one. They've voluntarily put themselves in public domain.

I totally understand man...

I hate it when people turn rp into another job.

Scarlett Kala - August 7, 2008 02:07 PM (GMT)
Amen! For some of these, it's horrible that we have them to complain about because they just plain shouldn't exist, they are so ridiculous. I wonder how they get and retain members will all those insane rules that to me only make them sound pretentious.
