Title: Canons You Wish You Could Play
Sunday - August 3, 2008 05:49 AM (GMT)
Another random discussion topic.
I wish I could play Harry Potter, Draco Malfoy, and Remus Lupin. Draco I think I'm a little better at, but I really cannot get down Harry or Remus's character. :[

The Doctor.
"Doctor? Doctor who?"
yes, that's the one.

Well... I don't play on many boards that have canons, per se; I also like original characters much more. But I must say I have a few, rather shameful, preferences.
-Dr. Cox from 'Scrubs' (can't play him, because I don't think a 'Scrubs' RP would work all that well... hell, though, I'd play almost anyone from 'Scrubs')
-Sam Vimes, from Pratchett's 'Discworld' novels (likewise... not really a series that easily lends itself to RP, though I may set one up eventually)
-Death from 'Discworld' (because he's, well, Death!)
-Snape, from 'Harry Potter' (yes, disappointingly unoriginal; but it just struck me that he fulfills about sixteen million of my favorite character traits: anger and hatred toward others; bitterness; double-agenting, a favorite trope of mine; and general coolness--damn it...)
I sense a theme here. Angry, thwarted, sometimes older, antiheroic males. I like them.
I don't tend to play canons, though--in fact, I never have played a canon. It's just too constraining for me. I like to create my own characters--I get more attached to them that way. But if I were to take one, those are who I'd take.

Oops. I misread. Nothing to see here, move along and ignore me.

I don't think my wishing I could play a canon has anything to do with my inability to grasp them. If you do the reading then you have as good an understanding as anyone. The problem for me is finding a board that has the character free I want to play.
I want to play Domino in an AU environment where I don't have to follow her comic background.
I want to play Husk where she isn't plagued by Angel. Ugh.
I want to play the White Queen, not this nonsense with Cyclops kthxbai.
I want to play Elena Michaels, preferably pre-babies. I have baby-phobia.
I can play them all. Save for Emma and Elena, I've played them at one point or another but finding a site without an Emma is difficult. She's popular. Finding an Elena...I need to find a game based on those books to begin with, d00d. surprisingly I found only one and it's canon-free which sucks out all the fun.
Really, if I fancy playing a canon and I can find somewhere to do it, I figure I deserve a fair bash at it regardless of who I think might do it better. If I don't try, I won't know, won't improve and won't ever get to play the canons I fancy playing. So I try it because that's my RP Mantra, courtesy of David Almond: BE BRAVE.
It took a while for me to be goaded into taking Remus Lupin. I did it out of necessity in the end, which I regret, but I really enjoy him now. I find that he fits like a suit that's a bit too big. I have all the essentials and room to move around, which is exactly what he needs if he's going to survive on my game.
It's important to strike certain balances. Take those core traits and if a passage of time has gone by, include some related development, think about where this character could go once in your hands. Canons run the risk of becoming very flat if a player doesn't bring them into their own somewhat.
The only people who will slate you for it are lame people. If you fail at application, well, you won't get in. Fair do's, you can revise and try again which is better than crawling back under a rock muttering about elitist admins with ridiculous expectations; there's no room in canon for precious egos.

I should not reply to things that early in the morning. I totally misread the question... and possibly scuppered my post in RP requests in the process. *fail*

Hmmm....I do not like canons...I don't play them well and I normally don't care to try...however...
Now that I am thinking about it, there are a few canons I wish I could play...
Wonder Woman-I do NOT make a good WW. I have tried....massive fail.
Sailor Neptune-Yeah, I know, I am SO juvenile for wishing I could play a Sailor Scout well...Especially since, you know, Sailor Moon is for kids...(not true...America messes up all anime by dubbing it bad and cutting stuff out...)
Galandra Ozma- A Tin Man character I wish I could play, but she's way too syrupy sweet for me to play...(I like to be the anarchist or the punk woman...sue me.)
There's more, but I'm carsick and not feeling well, and therefore not thinking at my best.

Well chosen, my friend!
Although I'm going to add Granny Weatherwax to that list, and possibly Lilith Weatherwax as well.
Khelder/Silk from the Belgariad too, and Polgara! Much luffs for Polgara!
I don't play canon often though, possibly once.. ever. I lub my babies too much, and they get jealous if I take on someone else's work.

I think it'd be fun to play Mat and/or Aviendha from Wheel of Time, but I have never actually seen a WoT RPG, and though I've been thinking about making one myself, I think the world might be a little bit too extensive, meaning that you'd have to read all the books to play the game.

...which left me convinced that Amara was a cross-dresser - a male cross-dresser - for three years until I found out that, in the original, she's a lesbian. I also could never figure out why Zoisite didn't have boobs. THE DUBBERS FAILED.
But I digress.
Personally, I'd love to be able to pull of Tonks (I can't >.>), Sailor Neptune (who's already been mentioned, and yeah, I can't >.>), or Peter Pettigrew after he's already become Voldie's bitch (I probably could, but not for long before my brain would be all, "WHY DO YOU TAKE THIS, PETIE?").
Yeah, I'm weird XP

For the record, I don't believe that. Some shows get messed up but others are done quite well. I'm a fan of the dubbing industry and I have a lot of friends that make a living doing voices for anime shows.
That said.
I'd probably like to be able to pull of Wolverine.

never had any urge to RP anything that has to do with Harry Potter, so count me entirely out of that one...
one I would love to play is Captain Teague from PotC... had him once on one board, but that went down. Applied for him on another but was denied completely for reasons I still don't get... and I've yet to find a good active PotC board with a good plot and decent players to want to join another...
I should also love to play Scar from Lion King... or Nala, or Kiara or Kovu :)

Leia Organa - while I try to convince people that I have a kick-butt attitude which can be used in combat, I can't play those sorts of characters. Leia is a woman, so she does have the usual feminine qualities, and I think I could pull that off. Her kick-butt attitude would screw me up, though. I would end up making her a complete brat rather than a woman who can hold her own.
Yoda - I would fail. Fail fail fail. Since the beginning of time, I want to play him. But no, I fail.
Thomas Jefferson - I would love to play him, but I don't know where I would play him. *begs for colonial RPG*
Miley Cyrus! - she is so horrible amazing! (( jk, haha, got you fooled!))
I want to play Thomas for a lot of reasons, plus, I have everything planned out about him. I just can't play him anywhere *sigh* I've never actually thought about this, though, so I don't have a long list...yet.

I would very much like to play the tenth doctor or Donna. I've written a few fanfictions with them in it and I've been told I have the dialogue down pat. Some of my characters sometimes speak like the doctor because he's just brilliant!

OMG THOMJEFF. I would so make an Alexander Hamilton (or ALEXHAM as I like to call him). <333 I love them; they are my historical OTP! Colonial RP would be awesome sauce. :]
roflrofl.
SmathNa - August 3, 2008 06:49 PM (GMT)
Søren Kierkegaard ftw. Except that no one, but NO ONE, would ever in a million years make a board set in 1840s Denmark that didn't die a horrible death within the fortnight. It wouldn't work. But I love the guy.
Or, if we're on the topic, characters (any) from Aldous Huxley's 'Point Counter Point.' Spandrell, mmm... Mark Rampion...
No one has the slightest clue what I'm on about, but there you are.

Angelina Jolie - I would so love to channel her reaction to being made into Assassangelina by RP kids.
Greymalkin - August 5, 2008 05:52 AM (GMT)
Professor X. I tried. I sucked. 'nuff said.
Captain Jack Harkness
Vlad Taltos
Actual historical people I wish I could play:
Francis Walsingham. Way too much awesome for me to handle.
Charles Martel. Ditto.
Mac-a-roni - August 5, 2008 06:27 AM (GMT)
I would love to play Captain Jack Sparrow. He is just.. brilliant. I know I couldn't get him down.. not his psyche, his dialogue, the correct amount of whimsy and all that. Thats why I absolutely love reading well written and characterized Jack Sparrow posts.
Aubs - August 5, 2008 02:49 PM (GMT)
I would love to be able to play Dean from Supernatural. He's so snarky and awesome and I've tried (and failed) to get his personality onto an RP and it doesn't work.
Also, to broaden it out a little bit, I wish I could play girls in general. I don't know why, but it's like...next to impossible for me.
