A Sports RP.....wow...sorry, not my thing. I dunno what the demand for a sport RP is, but I don't think it's that high...

To make any RP successful, you need to have a solid plot, a well designed site, demand for the type of RP you're aiming to make, and more. Nice graphics are a plus, originality is needed, etc etc.

And advertising. Advertising is Key.

If the site you are talking about is the one you link to in your sig, I will say right now: it looks actually like a decent site.
Make sure you don't only have rps for actual games, but things that happen outside of the games. Maybe you could even make it possible to rp in a town (could be fictional). Maybe this certain city is known for its thorough interest in sports, and almost all the residents have full interest in sports. This will open some doors for different sorts of characters that may have not been possible if you did just the games. Locker rooms, sports stores, even the food stand would be good to have, too.
You may also want to push team spirit, and team rivalry. This could cause some cool plottage on the site.

Oh, and make sure a lot of sports talk is in the OOC section. And as I always say, push and strive to have your members talk to each other, whether seriously or all in fun. Make sure you have a chatbox, forum games, and topics about things that happen in life besides sports ;)

I think Junebug pretty much covered it, for suggestions. I've never heard of a sports RPG before, but it sounds interesting. You should try seeing about affiliating with sports sites that do not offer RPG's. It might pull in some more sports fans.
