Title: What Do You Look For In A High Fantasy Game
Description: ...as far as plot and originality go?
RotFMods - July 30, 2008 02:38 AM (GMT)
All right. So, I'm bored, and the more I sit here in pure boredom, the more I'm thinking that I would like to possibly start a high fantasy game of some sort, since it's been a long time (...well, around almost a year) since I've done that. If I were to go through with it, I would want to take several months before beginning to advertise and all that wonderful stuff.
But before I even think about that, I need a plot. I've been toying around with some small possibilities, but most of them are on the "do not touch" list, because I intend to use them for my story/novel writing purposes, and I've had...not-so-great experiences when I've started a role play based on a story or vice versa.
So what I'm wondering is this. What do you look for as far as the plot goes? Considering it's fantasy, it's almost impossible to avoid using some sort of cliche, so what are the cliche's/overdone plots that you could live with in a plot?
Be as detailed as you can with any ideas you may have on a plot you would like to see, if possible.
Basically what I would be leaning towards is something involving magic fairly heavily, probably centering around mages of some sort. There was one game I did on Livejournal where there was a group of mages that were rebelling against the king, because he hated mages and basically wanted to kill them off. I wouldn't be opposed to either doing something similar to that or maybe even restarting that game but taking a different perspective on it.
Another thing I would be leaning towards is something involving dragons, and/or maybe elves. It's been a long time since I've been involved in a game with such things, and while I'm by no means an expert on either of them, they can be fun to play. Maybe some quests, wars...captures, balls...I don't know, I'm just throwing this stuff out there.
Okay, enough of my rambling about that. Basically, give me some plot ideas that you wouldn't mind seeing in a high fantasy game with a medieval sort of setting. Stuff with kingdoms, countries, princes, knights...all that wonderful stuff. :D
Feel free to discuss as needed. Maybe my creativity gears will start going and I'll be able to come up with some sort of game. >.>

This is what I look for in a Fantasy rpg, and rpg's in general.
1. Accessibility
The plot has to be able to involve anyone. If the plot's about the King's infidelity, why would I want to play an unconnected commoner? Everyone should be able to get involved in the plot, from the prince to the poopsmith
2. Logic
Magic should affect the world and the plot in a logical way (even though it is not itself magical). If mediums could see the future, then it would make sense for every business and kingdom to have one, for instance.
3. Racial Balance (and logic!)
Races in the game must have balance for me. No elves that are immortal/perfect/beautiful/powerful with magic/the best swordsmen/etc. I'm looking at you, LotR. And if you do have a race like that, then it'd make sense if they ruled the world.
4. BEZERKERS!
I love Berzerkers. Nothing like a half-naked crazy guy/chick with an axe. Any plot that works in Berzerkers at some point wins for me.
5. The Chosen One
It's pretty clear why this is a bad idea in a forum RPG.
6. Unique magic use
Something other than the stereotypical witch/wizard standard. I don't mind including them, but, yeah.
I can put up with most other things, like royalty and evil cults and dragons. Quests are always awsome. Terrible secrets are cool too.

Agreed. Sometimes this can be good to use in small games, where it's limited to a few players, but even then it can sometimes get out of hand...especially if the plot is very centric to the "Chosen One," and only that person's character gets the spotlight on them and everyone stands around.
I definitely agree with everything else you listed, and I'll be doing my absolute best to make sure I follow through with at least 4/6 (because I'm not sure what bezerkers are o.O and I'm going to steer as far as I can away from doing the chosen one thing) of those things.

o.O Ah, okay. Yeah, definitely don't see those being something that would be in this specific role play, if I go with the idea with the mages I mentioned above, which I'm starting to lean towards doing.

As previously mentioned, the most important thing in the plot would be making sure that it is open to all players and characters (at least a significant, site-wide plot or two. Side-plots are a different story entirely). People are going to avoid games that they don't feel they can be deeply involved in, and if they do join, there's a good chance that they'll get bored. This also gives everyone an opportunity to roleplay together rather than being forced to roleplay with a few specific characters.
If you manage to give people a lot of freedom while providing them with some interesting basics, I don't see why you wouldn't be successful in the plot department. ;)
My other fantasy RP loves are all rather clear if you look at Meliora. XD I like having a lot of different cultures/races to choose from/interact with, and a developed world to play in. Conflict is always good, too (what's a story without a conflict?). ;)

In tribute to the teacher of my writing class I took a few months ago (she actually ended up being my teacher from my freshman year of high school...the class she was teaching was an adult education one offered in my town): conflict is 90% or...
...Yeah, I don't remember what she said exactly. I don't remember the percentage, either.
ANYWAY.
Yeah, I agree. Right now I'm rather stuck on the plot of the game I'd like to start...and the idea of either restarting or continuing a game that I ran on LJ popped into my head when I first started thinking about starting a fantasy game, so now I'm leaning towards doing one of those two things if I can't think of an actual unrelated plot, which...at the moment I haven't been able to.
Hello, writer's block.
The original LJ game basically revolved around a group of mages who were considered outcasts by the king, and the king basically wanted them dead. I was thinking of redoing that and just...somehow making it more of a site wide plot that would involve more people.
Or I was thinking of having it take place in the future from the events that took place in that game, but I haven't been able to think of a plot for that.
So to get this back to being even more on topic, what is a plot you wouldn't mind seeing in a fantasy game? Would you rather see something involving multiple (something along the lines of four) kingdoms with...a war of some sort, maybe, oooor...
I don't know. I'm rather stuck on a plot -other- than the thing with the mages (which has a lot more to it, more or less, than I explained), so I guess this is my attempt to see if anyone else can possibly help to spark some ideas in my brain so I can start working on it. >.>

Free Form RPG's do it for me when it comes to High Fantasy. Nothing beats the freedom to do anything you want as long as it's contained in the role-play world :D A strong plot can be nice to but when it comes to fantasy I don't like being strapped down by a major plot lol
Keeper of Secrets - August 1, 2008 02:22 PM (GMT)
For what I'm thinking, the plot wouldn't necessarily be a major one but it would be enough to still give enough background information about the world and what's going on, while hopefully giving enough freedom to the players to be able to create sub-plots and all that stuff.
At least, that's what I'm -trying- to essentially do. It would be better if I had a stronger plot in mind, but I've been rather blocked as far as a really detailed plot goes. >.>
