Title: Do You Save Your Character Applications?
Sunday - July 29, 2008 11:10 PM (GMT)
I save all my character sheets, since I write them all in Wordpad. I can't compose an application in the actual "post" since I need more space. :p Plus, I am obsessive about keeping my applications in my harddrive, so I don't have to hunt all over for them.
Elenlond - July 29, 2008 11:14 PM (GMT)
Depends on what happens to the character, or whether I intend to keep that character as an Rp character (most start out as story characters, usually). Typically, though, I save all of my applications, or have copies of them somewhere. Most sit on my harddrive in Word documents, others end up in Notepad where I save them before I go offline. I do end up deleting some of them, but not always. Like I said, it depends on the character, and whether or not the original profile I have for them will work for another site or not. What I mean to say is, I'm selective XD. And it depends on my mood. >>;
vision_afar - July 30, 2008 12:05 AM (GMT)
I have a habit of saving all my applications. I write them in Word, so saving them is a click away. Plus, I often play canons [from actual fandom], so it's easier to save those applications for future use in case the board closes down, gets deleted or whatever.
EliteGirl - July 30, 2008 12:17 AM (GMT)
I put "most or some of them". Really, I saved my charater apps and plots to put them here for safekeeping and so I don't lose them and take up a lot of hard drive.
Tulojow Nagde - July 30, 2008 12:25 AM (GMT)
Most definitely. I have a directory for rp stuff and each character has a folder. All graphics components, applications, relationship forms and important posts/threads are saved there. What can I say, I'm obsessive with organizing at times.
December, Esq - July 30, 2008 12:35 AM (GMT)
I said yes because I save 99%. I usually RP the characters for a bit before I save them, so sometimes I just forget and they never get saved. :[
Alnoy’nmsr Ceeda’nlca - July 30, 2008 01:10 AM (GMT)
I've got RP profiles dating back six years - never deleted one yet ;) if nothing else I like to re-read them and remember the fun times I had writing, using and making them ^^
XZol - July 30, 2008 01:28 AM (GMT)
I always save my characters in Word because I never really finish them in one sitting, usually working on them over a period of a few days to a week. I also have a forum where I keep all of my characters stored online.

Excellent idea mind if I borrow/steal?
And I regret not having some of my OC's from fandom sites. There is one particular character that I would kill to have back, and never saved her on any computer, so she is lost in the internets...
Because of that, I now religiously keep every bio I have ever writen. As a consequence, for some characters I have four or five different bios. I should probably go through and merge them... Except that a lot of my OCs are different ages in different bios...
Emma - July 30, 2008 02:23 AM (GMT)
heh I'm like that, Phoenix. I have I think seven different bios for one character from when I adapted her to be on different sites. I don't even play her at all anymore.
SO yes, I do keep all my bios unless I forget, which is rare.
I agree: good idea, Tulojow.
Sunday - July 30, 2008 02:26 AM (GMT)
I save all my character graphics and such too. :p And I label which site they're from so I know which incarnation of the character it is, lmao. There's a folder in My Documents called "rolep," and a sub-folder called "apps." I should get around to organizing them between boys/girls, but I haven't yet. :p
SpazzyMal - July 30, 2008 02:58 AM (GMT)
I save all of mine too. I compose them in Word (Like Sunday, I like having the extra space when writing), and save them there. I like having my stuff handy, for whenever I want to review things, or revamp a character for a new site and whatnot.
Jenno - July 30, 2008 03:18 AM (GMT)
For me it depends upon the character I'm creating.
I always write them up on word as it's easier for me to see how well, or badly, my thoughts have scrambled out of my fingertips. But when it comes to saving my characters, I tend to save most, the ones that I think are at least half decent. But the ones that really aren't that good, most of my old ones, I don't save and I haven't ended up needing them again... yet.
pathogenicoma - July 30, 2008 03:48 AM (GMT)
I save all my apps. Along with all my posts, and usually the posts of whoever I'm threading with. Saved in Roleplay Resources, by game, then sub-foldered for bios, posts, etc.

Wow...posts too? :o
I mean really...
:o
Finding Firefox was a godsend to me because I was too lazy to pull up Word for spell check and all of that. I couldn't imagine saving all of my posts...
:o
Radsos - July 30, 2008 05:55 AM (GMT)
Only the ones I like in particular or think are really cool. And I save them in my email so even if my harddrive goes kapoot I can still access them via email without much trouble.
Vanity - July 30, 2008 06:19 AM (GMT)
If I like it a lot or if I'll need it for future reference. I have three characters over 2 and a half generations of one RP that are all from the same family, so I have their family tree, their profiles, their graphics and their important threads all saved to DVD.
But the rest, I'll be able to rewrite, because once you've got into a character (or they've got into you?), they never really go away.
t i l t - July 30, 2008 06:19 AM (GMT)
Yes! I write them in my word processor, too. I love re-reading old muses of mine. . . particularly their histories. I spend a lot of time on them :3
But I hardly ever reuse them. That just feels wrong .___.;
Mousie - July 30, 2008 08:49 AM (GMT)
When I write them in word, I do. Though frequently I write applications up straight into the posting box. I don't know why, it's pretty stupid when you think of it...
Seanu - July 30, 2008 11:25 AM (GMT)
I save all of mine, because I've been known to forget where I had the character in the first place. << I spent three days tracking an admin and asking if she could search for my old character - of whom I didn't know the name - and it turned out to be on another forum, that was still open.
I did have them all saved on my external hard drive, but as you can see in
this thread, it broke down and I lost them all. So now I only ave a few saved on my computer's hard drive; but I still have my own test forum where I save them all too. XD Because I'm just that paranoid. [=
silent cacophony - July 30, 2008 12:13 PM (GMT)
I used to have some saved on a spreebb.com board, but then .. spreebb died. u__u And I lost them, unfortunately. I have a private IF board where I post more recent things like this, and then I have a lot of older stuff saved across multiple computers.
So generally, yes, I do. <3
WildeThing - July 30, 2008 12:48 PM (GMT)
I save everything. I write all my posts and bios on word, anyway, so I have everything I've ever written since I started, save for my first bio, which I forgot to save. My word docs are subcategorised by game with a word doc for each char, so some chars have like 150 pages because I also save the posts of the people I thread with, although in a different color.
Jae - July 30, 2008 02:06 PM (GMT)
I save all applications, all my posts, all of other people's posts and applications, and lots of the RPG info. XD I'm a little obsessive about keeping things in order, too...
bumble_ - July 30, 2008 02:48 PM (GMT)
Wow. You are all amazing. I'm the one vote that doesn't save them long term.
I write them up in word, but when I've posted it I generally don't keep that applications longer than a few days. I don't know why... Lol.
I guess I don't really understand the need to - although I wish I had saved some posts...
Keijukainen - July 30, 2008 02:52 PM (GMT)
I save applications and posts, both for ease of typing and as a safeguard against board/server problems. It's a habit I got into a long time ago and has come in pretty handy once or twice.
For some characters, I have multiple versions of their profiles saved within the same WordPad document. It's interesting sometimes to read back through and see how a character has evolved - or how a character hasn't.
Panda - July 30, 2008 04:22 PM (GMT)
Oh my God are you mad? Of course I save them! I hate, hate, hate losing my applications and so I am religious about keeping copies of them on an external HD I have. I spend a lot of time on my applications so I want them to be retained because hey, I like to recycle--it's good for the environment.
Catastrophe86 - August 1, 2008 06:05 PM (GMT)
Heck yeah!
I've been accused of being a notorious hoarder... and it's so true. I have applications dating from way back when I first started RP'ing, and a lot of the posts from those days as well.. Even if these will never ever ever ever see the light of day again. Ever. The characters might, but the apps and the posts won't.
Anyway, even if I weren't such a hoarder by nature, I would definitely have been taught my lesson by the admin of this one game I was on. It wasn't unusual for players to log on and find that their stuff was gone, often because the admin held a grudge, and used any excuse to get rid of the player, no matter how thin. Lots of good applications were lost because of that, and I never want that to happen to mine.
But yeah... I like rereading stuff I've written. A lot of the time, I roll my eyes and tell myself that I suck, but sometimes I come across stuff that's actually worth wasting time on reading. Also, I find that old applications and posts can be a great indicator of what I was going through at the time when I wrote it, and that's always interesting.
Sofia - August 1, 2008 07:22 PM (GMT)
I usually do save all my applications and avatars and banners, and plot pages all those things. I mean for characters mostly, i usually have two or three per site and sometimes i have character that dont go well with the site and then I think maybe I should just delete the character. But sometimes when i find another site, I find that the character that didn't go there is better off in this site. and I'm glad that i saved the app so I won't have to redo it. And like for cannon characters, I used to play james Potter on a site and i saved the app after it had been edited a LOT since it was still really good,so I used it for another site.
Rambling I know.
Saving applications is really helpful for me, since I'm really closed-minded and I like keeping the same characters no matter what and its a pain havig one character and then trying to remember their history and personality when I deleted the app at least it is for me....
Sorry I'm confusing myself and now I shall stop talking lol
Aeris - August 1, 2008 11:00 PM (GMT)
I keep every single one of them.
I work on them all in word documents- and then never ever delete them. And sometimes I'll go through and edit them to put them on new sites. Its fun- and allows me to keep pretty much the same few characters- until I get way up there with character numbers.
One time I edited a Fire bending character of mine into a Herald of Valdamar- it was interesting.
kino - August 4, 2008 01:02 AM (GMT)
I learned the hard way to save all my characters. Saving post in my opinion is a bit extreme, but characters I definately save. After a site was on got hacked and cleaned out two times, I made sure to save them. Having to remake the same profile once was bad, imagine the second time around. >.<
frothies - August 4, 2008 01:24 PM (GMT)
Why yes, yes I do! XD
All the time, actually. =]
Since like you, Sunday, I write my apps on MWord.
Now I feel like I keep those for future references. haha, now I feel like I'm some psychiatrist with files of the people I've... shrunk. (LOL! How do you 'past-tense-isized' that anyway? XD)
SmathNa - August 4, 2008 04:15 PM (GMT)
I save nothing. Roleplay is just a game for me; while I use it to get inspiration, I don't feel incredibly attached to the writing I do in that context. I suppose that's weird, considering I have decent standards... but, after all, it's unedited, and it's often over-the-top melodrama. As for my characters, I understand before I write the app, and I understand them just as well afterwards, but no better. I don't need to keep looking at the app.
Mac-a-roni - August 4, 2008 07:11 PM (GMT)
I save most of them because I write everything in Microsoft Word- posts, character applications, ect. I have alot of character applications that I never even used saved. *blush* I always think I deleted them, and I go back and look, and there they are!
They are good to have in case the forum crashes/ there are hackers/ect. Not entirely necessary, but useful. ^^
Scarlett Kala - August 5, 2008 10:33 PM (GMT)
I don't, but I definitely should! I think it's useful for easier joining of other sites, since most applications are typically the same. I guess it depends on if your trying to start completely fresh with a new character and new RPing outlook or not.
There's a lot of info like this I feel I should save on my computer that I don't, lol, and it ends up haunting me later. Better safe than sorry!
